Dabaru is a movie based on the life of top Indian Grandmaster, Trainer and author - GM Surya Sekhar Ganguly. This is an one-of-it's-kind film, this being the first movie based on the life of an Indian Chess Grandmaster! The movie had a theater release on 10th May in West Bengal, and a few days later in other states. Aditya Sur Roy from ChessBase India lives in Hyderabad, and decided to watch it with his family! 24th Dubai Open R6: Raunak outplays Sethuraman, Iniyan escapes against Aronyak

GM Mahammad Muradli (AZE) drew with GM Yagiz Kaan Erdogmus (TUR) to maintain his sole lead 5/6 at 24th Dubai Open 2024. GM Raunak Sadhwani defeated GM Sethuraman S P to stay in the hunt. This is Raunak's first-ever Classical win over his opponent. The teenager exploited his opponent's tiny positional inaccuracy in the middlegame. GM Pa Iniyan made a great escape against IM Aronyak Ghosh. Aronyak had two good chances to push for a win. Unfortunately for him, he missed both and the game ended in a draw. Six players - Aronyak, Raunak, GM Velimir Ivic (SRB), Iniyan, Yagiz and IM Sina Movahed (IRI) are trailing the leader by a half point at 4.5/6 each. Norway Chess Women 2024 R4: Vaishali prevails Pia Cramling, increases her sole lead

R Vaishali continues her great form at Norway Chess Women 2024. She scored her second Classical win of the event. In Round 4, she defeated the legend, Pia Cramling (SWE) after the latter blundered in an equal rook endgame. Anna Muzychuk (UKR) ended her win drought in Classical chess. She seized her opportunity when Koneru Humpy blundered in a balanced rook endgame. The rematch from Women's World Championship 2023 Match between Tingjie Lei (CHN) and Wenjun Ju (CHN) ended in a draw in the Classical. However, Wenjun won the Armageddon after her opponent could not manage to score a must-win game with the white pieces. Today is a rest day. 12th Norway Chess R4: Nakamura schools Praggnanandhaa, emerges new sole leader

Hikaru Nakamura defeated R Praggnanandhaa to leap to the top of the 12th Norway Chess 2024 leaderboard. Praggnanandhaa's ambitious knight sacrifice to increase the vulnerability of his opponent's king did not work out. Nakamura had no trouble converting his advantage into a win. The teenager kept fighting but to no avail. Magnus Carlsen avenged his last year's loss on the exact day against Fabiano Caruana. The latter blundered into a mate in five in a queen endgame which ideally should have ended in a draw. Alireza Firouzja defeated the reigning world champion, Ding Liren for the second time in this year. Today is a rest day. Round 5 starts tomorrow 1st June from 5 p.m. CET, 8:30 p.m. IST. 24th Dubai Open R5: Iniyan subdues Safarli, joins the pursuit with Aronyak and Sethuraman

GM Mahammad Muradli (AZE) defeated second seeded GM Raunak Sadhwani to emerge sole leader 4.5/5 at 24th Dubai Open 2024. Raunak had a difficult defense to save the game. However, he missed his sole window of opportunity and the Azeri won the full point. GM Yagiz Kaan Erdogmus (TUR) had a well contested draw with GM Sethuraman S P. IM Aronyak Ghosh needed to take a bold decision and find a complex line to push for a win against GM Velimir Ivic (SRB). Ivic managed to sacrifice an exchange at the right time to escape with a draw. Speaking of exchange sacrifices, GM Eltaj Safarli (AZE) made an incorrect one allowing GM Pa Iniyan to score a full point. Norway Chess Women 2024 R3: Humpy and Vaishali win Armageddon

R Vaishali drew her Classical game against Anna Muzychuk (UKR) in Norway Chess Women 2024 Round 3. She also drew her Armageddon game. Anna was determined to push for a win in both games. However, Vaishali ensured that she does not make any mistake. She maintained her sole lead 5.5/9. The reigning Women's World Champion - Wenjun Ju (CHN) won her Armageddon against the legend - Pia Cramling (SWE). Wenjun drew her Armageddon with the black pieces to win the match. She is 4.5/9. Koneru Humpy drew the Classical game against Tingjie Lei (CHN). She won Armageddon with the white pieces on demand to move to 3/9. Round 4 starts today from 5 p.m. CET, 8:30 p.m. IST. 12th Norway Chess R3: Praggnanandhaa crushes Carlsen, scoring his first-ever Classical win against the World no.1

R Praggnanandhaa defeated Magnus Carlsen for the first time at Airthings Masters 2022. Earlier this month, Praggnanandhaa scored his first-ever over-the-board rated game win over the World no.1 at Grand Chess Tour Superbet Blitz 2024 in Warsaw, Poland. A few hours ago, on Wednesday 29th May, in the third round of 12th Norway Chess 2024, the teenager managed to beat the Norwegian for the first time in a Classical rated game. He got a better position out of the opening and converted his advantage into a win. Although he felt that he allowed his opponent to equalize, the FIDE World Cup 2023 winner, did not get a chance to recuperate. They will face each other again in Round 8. His next opponent is Hikaru Nakamura (USA) who defeated Alireza Firouzja (USA) in Armageddon for the second consecutive year at this event. Round 4 starts today from 5 p.m. CET, 8:30 p.m. IST. 24th Dubai Open R4: Raunak and Sethuraman join Aronyak in a five-way lead

The top board clash between IM Aronyak Ghosh and GM Yagiz Kaan Erdogmus (TUR) ended in a draw. GM Raunak Sadhwani and GM Sethuraman S P scored wins over IM Oliver Dimakiling (PHI) and GM Evgenios Ioannidis (GRE) respectively to join the lead. Aronyak, Raunak, Sethurama, Yagiz and GM Mahammad Muradli (AZE) are the five players at 3.5/4 at 24th Dubai Open 2024. Sethuraman's win was not so smooth. His Greek opponent had a tough to spot defence in the sharp double rook and bishop vs queen and bishop endgame. WIM Srishti Pandey defeated Taksh Sharma to maintain her perfect score 4/4 in Category B. She will face her coleader Yousef A Alhassadi (LBA) in the fifth round. Norway Chess Women 2024 R2: Vaishali traps Humpy's queen at the center of the board

R Vaishali scored her first Classical win over Koneru Humpy in Norway Chess Women 2024 Round 2. Humpy had a slight edge in the middlegame. However, a couple of incorrect pawn pushes allowed her opponent to get back in the game. A rook swing resulted in Humpy's queen getting trapped at the center of the board. Thus, Vaishali scored the first three points of the event, combining both Open and Women. Tingjie Lei (CHN) and Wenjun Ju (CHN) won Armageddon games against Pia Cramling (SWE) and Anna Muzychuk (UKR). Both Wenjun and Tingjie are trailing Vaishali by a full point at 3/6 each. 12th Norway Chess R2: Magnus humbles Hikaru in Armageddon

The second round of 12th Norway Chess 2024 also witnessed three Armageddon. Magnus Carlsen (NOR) got the better of Hikaru Nakamura (USA) in Armageddon. The latter decided to play actively and not defend a pawn. He lost two more pawns after that and the game. Alireza Firouzja (FRA) was determined to beat Fabiano Caruana (USA). It was evident from the way he started the Classical battle. In Armageddon, despite getting the upperhand, Caruana misplayed, made an incorrect exchange sacrifice and allowed his opponent to get back in the game. A few mistakes later, he lost the game. Ding Liren (CHN) is slowly getting back to his old form. In the Armageddon, he showed his opponent, R Praggnanandhaa, why he is the world champion. 24th Dubai Open R1-3: Aronyak Ghosh stuns Vahap Sanal

IM Aronyak Ghosh stunned Turkey no.4 GM Vahap Sanal to score a hat-trick at 24th Dubai Open 2024 Category A (>2300). The only other player at 3/3 in this category is Turkey's youngest GM Yagiz Kaan Erdogmus. The second seeded GM Raunak Sadhwani and GM Sethuraman S P are at 2.5/3 each. Total 69 players including 24 GMs, 27 IMs and 3 WGMs are taking part in Category A. The average rating is 2429. That should give you an inkling about the strength of the tournament. R Vaishali drew her first Classical rated game against the reigning Women's World Champion - Wenjun Ju (CHN). However, she lost Armageddon. Koneru Humpy drew both her Classical and Armageddon games against Pia Cramling (SWE). Humpy having the black pieces, allowed her to win the match. Anna Muzychuk (UKR) drew the Classical against Tingjie Lei (CHN). However, she lost Armageddon, resulting in the Chinese winning the match. The first round of 12th Norway Chess 2024 witnessed three Armageddons. The Classical battle between the World champion - Ding Liren (CHN) and World no.1 - Magnus Carlsen (NOR) ended in a 14-move draw. The Armageddon also ended in a draw. However, Magnus having the black pieces, Armageddon rules worked in his favor. Thus, he won the match. R Praggnanandhaa won the must-win Armageddon against Alireza Firouzja (FRA) after their Classical game ended in a draw. This was the first time Praggnanandhaa defeated Firouzja in an over-the-board tournament game. Hikaru Nakamura (USA) defeated his compatriot Fabiano Caruana (USA) in Armageddon with the black pieces. Harikrishnan A Ra wins 3rd Mikis Theodorakis Open 2024

IM Harikrishnan A Ra, GM Stamatis Kourkoulos-Arditis (GRE) and IM Evaggelos Patrelakis (GRE) scored 7.5/9 each at 3rd Mikis Theodorakis Open 2024. Harikrishnan won the tournament due to better tie-breaks, Stamatis and Evaggelos secured second and third place respectively. Both Greek podium finishers remained undefeated. The total prize fund of the tournament was €4100. The top three prizes were €1000, €600 and €400 along with a trophy each respectively. The seven-day nine-round tournament was organized by Chania Chess Academy, A C C "Mikis Theodorakis", Region of Chania, Municipality of Chania, Greek Chess Federation at KAM Center of Mediterranean Architecture in Chania, Greece from 6th to 12th May 2024. This is Harikrishna's fourth rating tournament triumph of the year.

Norway Chess 2024 featuring Carlsen, Praggnanandhaa, Humpy, Vaishali and World's Best starts today

The 12th edition of Norway Chess starts today, Monday 27th May 2024. It will go on till Friday 7th June. For the first time, the tournament is introducing a Women's event with an equal number of players, rounds, same format at the same playing hall. The six-player double round-robin, world's strongest tournament will be played in both Open and Women's event. Each draw will be resolved by Armaggedon. Both reigning World Champions - Ding Liren (CHN) and Wenjun Ju (CHN) will be seen in action along with World no.1 - Magnus Carlsen (NOR). Round 1 starts today from 5 p.m. CET, 8:30 p.m. IST.
