World Junior 2024 R2: Dakshita Kumawat stuns Rakshitta Ravi

Dakshita Kumawat scored the biggest upset of FIDE World Junior 2024 Round 2. She found a nice tactic after her opponent WGM Rakshitta Ravi incorrectly pushed a pawn and limited her own bishop's movement. WFM Bhagyashree Patil drew a back and forth game against third seeded WGM Beloslava Krasteva (BUL). Both had their fair share of chances, Bhagyashree having more than her opponent. In the Open section, IM Ayush Sharma missed a very good chance to seize his advantage against IM Rudik Makarian. Mukund Hemant Agarwal made a nice save against IM Ilamparthi A R. Norway Chess Women 2024 R7: Anna Muzychuk ends Wenjun's unbeaten run, emerges sole leader

Anna Muzychuk (UKR) defeated the reigning Women's World Champion - Wenjun Ju (CHN) to emerge sole leader at Norway Chess Women 2024. Wenjun opted for the Berlin Defence in Ruy Lopez to draw the Classical game. Anna understanding Wenjun's intention, opted to avoid Ruy Lopez, played fast and accurately. Eventually Wenjun ran out of time in an equal rook and knight endgame. The former World Rapid and Blitz Women's champion, Anna reminded everyone why she won those events. Anna handed Wenjun her first Armageddon and match loss of the event. Koneru Humpy scored her first Classical victory of the tournament against Vaishali. 12th Norway Chess R7: Hikaru Nakamura wins an absolute thrilling Armageddon against Magnus Carlsen

Hikaru Nakamura (USA) and Magnus Carlsen (NOR) had quite possibly the most exciting Armageddon of 12th Norway Chess 2024. After a 20-move draw in the Classical, they had an absolute thriller of Armageddon. Nakamura mentioned playing the Sämisch variation in the Nimzo-Indian over a decade ago (exactly on the same day). He lost that game from a winning position. The world no.1 predicted it on the previous night while discussing with his second, GM Peter Heine Nielsen (DEN). Nakamura got himself a winning position in Armageddon by spotting a beautiful tactic. However, towards the end he fumbled and the game headed towards a draw. He managed to win the game on time. R Praggnanandhaa and Alireza Firouzja defeated Ding Liren (CHN) and Fabiano Caruana (USA) respectively in Armageddon. Magnus is still leading 13/21, followed by Nakamura 12.5/21 and Praggnanandhaa 11/21. Round 8 starts today from 5 p.m. CET, 8:30 p.m. IST.

Arjun Erigaisi squashes an IM in 14 moves, now World no.4

Arjun Erigaisi is in phenomenal form. He won the first four games for his team Metz Fischer at French Top 16 Club Championship 2024. He defeated GM Pentala Harikrishna (Asnieres - le Grand Echiquier), GM Vitaly Kunin (Marseille-Echecs), GM Alvar Alonso Rosell (Club 608 - Paris) and IM Loic Travadon (Cergy-Pontoise Echecs) in the first four rounds. His live rating is now 2771.2 and World no.4. Currently, his team Metz Fischer is at third place in Group A with 10 points. Harshit Pawar stunned the top seed of the tournament - GM Abhimanyu Mishra (USA) in the very first round of FIDE World Junior 2024. Harshit landed himself in a worse position out of the opening. However, he did not give up, continued the fight and soon world's youngest GM found himself in deep trouble. Harshit had no trouble seizing and converting his advantage into a full point. Nandish V S, Daksh Goyal and Sri Charan Sandipagu defeated IM IM Artiom Stribuk, IM Ekin Baris Ozenir (TUR) and IM L M S T De Silva (SRI) respectively. In the Girls event, Anupam M Sreekumar made the top seed IM Divya Deshmukh earn her first full point. Norway Chess Women 2024 R6: Anna Muzychuk and Wenjun Ju become coleaders

Wenjun Ju (CHN) defeated Vaishali in the Classical game to become one of the leaders at Norway Chess Women 2024. Vaishali made a few incorrect decisions in the endgame against the reigning Women's World Champion. First she needed to trade the queens before going into the minor piece endgame. Delaying the exchange only made things difficult for her to defend. Later, she missed few chances to salvage a draw. Anna Muzychuk (UKR) defeated Tingjie Lei (CHN) in the Armageddon to join the lead with Wenjun 10.5/18. The leaders will face each other in Round 7. Vaishali is just a half point behind at 10/18. 12th Norway Chess R6: Ding Liren blunders a shocking mate in two against Magnus Carlsen

Ding Liren (CHN) made a shocking mate in two blunder in an equal position against Magnus Carlsen (NOR). The world no.1 was in disbelief that his opponent overlooked such an elementary threat. He was evidently not happy with the way he won. He had to win the Classical to gain the lead, but not like that. He is now a full point ahead 12/18 of Hikaru Nakamura (USA) 11/18. Once again, Nakamura drew the Classical against Fabiano Caruana (USA). He made a strange retreat of his king in the middlegame and lost the thread of the position in the Armageddon. Caruana scored his first win in Armageddon at this event after losing two Classical games in-a-row. Praggnanandhaa drew the Classical against Alireza Firouzja (FRA). Pranav Anand and Divya Deshmukh set to lead the Indian charge at World Junior 2024

GM Abhimanyu Mishra (USA) and IM Divya Deshmukh are the top seeds at FIDE World Junior Open and Girls 2024. The highest rated Indian in the Open section will be GM Pranav Anand. The total prize fund is €10000. The top three prizes are €3000, €2000 and €1000 along with a medal and trophy in the Open. For Girls, they are €2000, €1250 and €750 along with a medal and trophy each. Fourth to tenth place will receive a trophy each. D Gukesh and Arjun Erigaisi stay in World top ten, Aravindh Chithambaram storms into Top 50

D Gukesh and Arjun Erigaisi maintained their place in World Top ten in FIDE Rating list June 2024. While Gukesh did not play any Classical rated games, Arjun played TePe Sigeman and Sharjah Masters to gain 0.4 Elo rating which maintained his rating. Gukesh is now World no.6 and Arjun World no.8. However, Arjun's live ranking is no.5 and Praggnanandhaa no.10, but the next change will take place in July. Aravindh Chithambaram gained 13.6 Elo rating points to become India no.7 and World no.44. Currently, there are four Indians in top 13, five in top 24, six in top 33, seven in top 44 and nine in top 61. Aravindh is one the biggest gainer of this list in the Open at the top. Among the Women, there are three Indians in top 14, four in top 24, five in top 57 and 10 in top 100. IM Divya Deshmukh is the highest gainer among the Indian women. R Vaishali scored in a must-win Armageddon with the white pieces against Tingjie Lei (CHN) in Round 5 of Norway Chess Women 2024. Vaishali made her intentions clear that she will leave no stone unturned to push for a win when she temporarily sacrificed an exchange. She was guaranteed to get it back and the position remained equal. However, the intent to score a win made a significant difference. Eventually, her opponent faltered and Vaishali walked away with 1.5 points. She maintains her sole lead 10/15. Anna Muzychuk (UKR) defeated Pia Cramling (SWE) to reduce the gap with the leader 9/15. 12th Norway Chess R5: Praggnanandhaa outplays Fabiano Caruana in the endgame, now World no.10

R Praggnanandhaa outplayed Fabiano Caruana (USA) to become World no.10 in the live ratings. In the fifth round of 12th Norway Chess, the teenager channeled Magnus Carlsen (NOR) by grinding an equal knight endgame. When the World no.2 crumbled, Praggnanandhaa had no trouble converting his advantage into a win. He now has a Classical win over both World no.1 and 2 and he achieved within a span of three days. Magnus also grinded an equal endgame against Alireza Firouzja (FRA) who made an elementary mistake in the rook endgame. 24th Dubai Open R7: Sina and Ivic join Muradli in a three-way lead

GM Mahammad Muradli (AZE) survived a massive scare against IM Aronyak Ghosh in Round 7 of 24th Dubai Open 2024. First, Aronyak sacrificed his bishop to expose his opponent's kingside. He could not follow through correctly. However, he later he got one more opportunity. He panicked and moved his king into safety, soon the queens got traded and the attacking chaces evaporated. GM Raunak Sadhwani had a relatively calm draw against GM Yagiz Kaan Erdogmus (TUR). IM Srihari L R stunned GM Luca Moroni Jr. (ITA) after the latter's Greek gift sacrifice did not work out. WIM Srishti Pandey won her second game in-a-row to maintain her pursuit 6/7 in Category B. She is now just a half point behind the sole leader, Yousef A Alhassadi (LBA). Anustoop Biswas wins 3rd Kashmir Rating Open 2024

Anustoop Biswas, IM Neeraj Kumar Mishra and FM Md. Sharif Hossain (BAN) scored 7.5/9 each at 3rd Kashmir Rating Open 2024. Anustoop won the tournament due to better tie-break score. Neeraj and Sharif secured second and third place respectively. Anustoop's sole loss of the event was against the eventual runner-up and one of the top trainers of the country, Neeraj in the final round. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹231000. The top three prizes were ₹50000, ₹25000 and ₹15000 along with a trophy each respectively. The six-day nine-round tournament was organized by The Kashmir Chess Club, Srinagar at Indoor Sports Complex, Polo Ground in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir from 4th to 9th May 2024. Vietnam’s 15-year-old National Champion - Banh Gia Huy

15-year-old Banh Gia Huy is only a FIDE Master with a rating of 2384 but already has two IM-norms and is the sensational winner of the Vietnam Championship. Huy will therefore be a member of the Vietnam team at the 45th Budapest Olympiad in September this year, joining the likes of GMs Le Quang Liem, Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son, and Tran Tuan Minh. Despite learning chess at four years of age from a chess set given to him by his father, Huy was a late starter to chess, his first tournament being in school during Grade 1 when six years of age. Pranav Ganesh Prabhu and Nivedita V C are 36th Tamil Nadu State Under-13 Champions 2024

Pranav Ganesh Prabhu scored an unbeaten 8/9 to win 36th Tamil Nadu State Under-13 Open Rating 2024. He finished a half point ahead of the rest. Four players - Tanish Ragavan S, Aarav A, Adharsh K and Pranav Sai Ram R S scored 7.5/9 each. They secured second to fifth place according to tie-breaks. In the Girls event, Nivedita V C scored a perfect 9/9 to become the champion. She finished a full point ahead of the competition. Shanmathi Sree S scored sole 8/9 to secure second place. Kaarthika Gadde and R Chardudharshini scored 7.5/9 each to be placed third and fourth respectively. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹50000, ₹25000 in Open and ₹25000 in Women. The top three prizes were ₹5000, ₹4000 and ₹3500 along with a trophy each respectively.
