Toby Curtis perfect at Golden Week Open 2024 Group A, Murugappan second

Axel Martin (FRA) and Nathan Summerville (JPN) scored 4.5/5 each at Golden Week Open 2024. Axel won the tournament due to better tie-breaks, Nathan was placed second. Shun Tokuni (JPN), Pei-Ti Wu (TPE) and Kei Sugita (JPN) scored 4/5 each. They were placed third to fifth respectively. In the Group A (Below 1700) section, Toby Curtis scored a perfect 5/5 to become the champion. Murugappan N, Yukihiko Yoshii (JPN), Kantaro Kohara (JPN) and Jie-Xin Lu (TPE) scored 3.5/5 each. They secured second to fifth place according to tie-breaks. The top three prizes in the Open were 20000, 15000 and 10000 Yen along with a plaque each. Mitrabha Guha triumphs at 55th Late Shri Babukaka Shirgaokar Rapid Rating Open 2024

GM Mitrabha Guha won his third tournament in two days. Mitrabha along with GM Venkatesh M R, IM Sammed Jaykumar Shete and IM Ritviz Parab scored 8/9 each. Top seed and the reigning Commonwealth Gold medalist, Mitrabha became the champion. The remaining three were placed second to fourth respectively according to tie-breaks. Only Mitrabha and Venkatesh remained undefeated. Their final round clash against each other ended in a draw. The total prize fund was ₹500000. The top three prizes were ₹60000, ₹40000 and ₹25000 along with a trophy each. The champion also received a Late Dr. V N Desai Rolling Silver Trophy. The one-day rating tournament was organized by Nutan Buddhibal Mandal, Coordinated by JK's Excellence Chess Academy at Abhiruchi Mall in Pune, Maharashtra on 12th May 2024. Hari Madhavan best at 8th BBCF Rapid Rating Open 2024

IM Hari Madhavan N B scored an unbeaten 8.5/9 to win 8th BBCF Rapid Rating Open 2024. IM Praveen Kumar C, IM S Rohith Krishna and Vignesh B scored 8/9 each. They secured second, third and fourth place respectively. The top three finishers remained undefeated. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹300000. The top three prizes were ₹30000, ₹20000 and ₹12000 along with a trophy each. The two-day rating tournament was organized by Brains Behind Chess Foundation at KRM Public School in Chennai, Tamil Nadu on 12th May 2024. Kumar Gaurav wins 6th SSC Rating Open 2024, Tejaswini Sagar second

Kumar Gaurav, WIM Tejaswini Sagar and CM Amarasinghe A A C B scored 8/9 each at 6th SSC Rating Open 2024. Kumar became champion due to better tie-breaks, Tejaswini second and Amarasinghe third overall. Both Kumar and Tejaswini remained undefeated. They drew their penultimate round battle against each other. In the Blitz Rating Open, Nikhil M scored an unbeaten 7.5/8 to become the champion. Pesandu Rashmitha Liyanage and Sivathanujan S scored 7/8 each to be placed second and third respectively. The total prize fund in combining all events were LKR 1.6 Million. The top three prizes in Classical were LKR 120000, 80000 and 50000 along with a trophy and medal each, for Blitz it was LKR 15000, 10000 and 7000. GM Mitrabha Guha dominated 4th Aavhan Rapid Rating and Blitz Open 2024. He scored 8.5/9 each in both events and finished a half point ahead of the field to become a clear champion. Five players - Pushkar Dere, FM Suyog Wagh, CM Snehal Bhosale, Arun Kataria and Arpan Das scored 8/9 each. They were placed second to sixth respectively according to tie-breaks. In the Blitz Open, four players - Suyog, Paras Dilip Bhoir, Ram Vishal Parab and FM Gaurang Bagwe scored 8/9 each. They secured second to fifth place respectively. The total prize fund in the Rapid Rating and Blitz Open were ₹200000 and ₹20000. The top three prizes in Rapid were ₹30000, ₹20000 and ₹16000 along with a trophy each, for Blitz it was ₹4000, ₹3000 and ₹2000. The two-day rating tournament was organized by Aavhan IIT Bombay at IIT Bombay in Mumbai, Maharashtra on 10th and 11th May 2024. C R Ritvik, Arnav Pradhan and Velugoti Yathin Reddy scored 8/9 each at 4th Marvel Below 1800 Rating Tournament 2024. Ritvik won the tournament due to better tie-breaks, Arnav and Velugoti were placed second and third respectively. Both Ritvik and Arnav remained undefeated. They drew their final round game against each other. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹600000. The top three prizes were ₹75000, ₹50000 and ₹40000 along with a trophy each. Deep Sengupta wins MCT Rapid Rating Open 2024

Six players - GM Deep Sengupta, IM Kaustuv Kundu, GM Mitrabha Guha, IM Neelash Saha, IM Sanket Chakravarty and FM Sourath Biswas scored 9/11 at MCT Rapid Rating Open 2024. Deep won Mitra Charitable Trust Rapid Rating Open 2024 due to better tie-breaks. The remaining five were placed second to sixth respectively. Deep's sole loss was against the eventual runner-up, Kaustuv. Only Mitrabha remained undefeated among the six-pack. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹615000. The top three prizes were ₹125000 + trophy, ₹100000 + trophy and ₹65000 each. The three-day rapid rating tournament was organized by R S Chess Academy at Indian Council for Cultural Relations in Kolkata, West Bengal from 4th to 6th May 2024. Unleashing Excitement: Announcing the Asian Rapid Team Championship 2024 in Hong Kong

The inaugural edition of Asian Rapid Team Chess Championship 2024 will take place in Hong Kong from 21st to 25th August. The tournament is open to any team comprising at least six players, maximum nine, including at least one female player and one who has never crossed 2000 FIDE rating in either Standard, Rapid or Blitz format. For more details, please check the tournament regulations. The top three prizes are HKD 100000 + cup, 60000 and 40000 along with a medal for each member of the team, provided they have played at least one game. Registration deadline is 1st June 12 p.m. Hong Kong time, 9:30 a.m. IST. Teams only need to register six players by that time. Divya Deshmukh wins Sharjah Challengers 2024

IM Divya Deshmukh drew against IM Leya Garifullina to win the Sharjah Challengers 2024. In the rook and bishop vs. rook endgame, Divya got a couple of chances in the end to push for a win. However, she decided not to take any unwarranted risk in the final round. A draw was enough for her to become the champion and that's what she did. The reigning Asian Continental Women's champion, has earned herself a spot in the Masters section of the next edition. GM Bardiya Daneshvar (IRI) drew against GM Arjun Erigaisi to win 7th Sharjah Masters 2024. GM Volodar Murzin, GM Sam Shankland (USA) and GM Shamsiddin Vokhidov (UZB) also scored the same 6.5/9 each. The Candidates Tournament 2024 took place in Toronto, Canada. From 3rd-22nd April 2024, it was a festival of chess at the city with so many top players staying there and playing one of the most important tournament of their lives! The tournament turned out to be quite exciting as well with many twists and turns. Sanket Nawle lives in Toronto, and is an excellent photographer. He tried to capture a few moments throughout the days outside the playing hall - and managed to take some beautiful photos! Ritviz Parab triumphs at 2nd Unity Club Rapid Rating Open 2024

IM Ritviz Parab and IM Ethan Vaz scored an unbeaten 8/9 each at 2nd Unity Club Rapid Rating Open 2024. Ritviz won the tournament due to better tie-breaks. 12-year-old Ethan had to settle for second place. Seven players scored 7.5/9 each. Out of them FM Apoorv Kamble was placed third according to tie-breaks. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹251000. The top three prizes were ₹55000, ₹33000 and ₹22000 along with a trophy each. The two-day rating tournament was organized by Unity Club at Ravindra Bhavan in Margao, Goa on 27th and 28th April 2024. This is Ritviz's second rating tournament victory of the year.

Two GM-norms and four IM-norms in Quang Ninh, Vietnam

Two GM and one IM-norm tournaments in Quang Ninh has produced a total of two GM-norms and four IM-norms. FM Pham Tran Gia Phuc (VIE) and IM Prin Laohawirapap (THA) scored the GM-norms in GM1 tournament. The IM-norm scorers are: FM Banh Gia Huy (VIE), FM Masruri Rahman (INA), FM Christian Gian Carlo Arca (PHI) and CM Dinh Nho Kiet (VIE). FM FT IA Peter Long (MAS) who participated in the IM A group, writes all. He also mentions how Vietnam's third GM Nguyen Anh Dung, GM IA Bui Vinh's very close friend stepped in to help with these tournaments.
