Commonwealth Chess Championships 2017 begins today!

GM Abhijeet Gupta will be the top seed at the Commonwealth Chess Championships 2017 which are being held from the 3rd to 11th of July 2017 in Delhi. The Open event witnesses the participation of 15 GMs and 14 IMs. There are 15 different categories ranging from under-8 to under 20 in both open and girls section. Players from 15 countries have come to participate in the different events. Youth affairs and sports minister Vijay Goel attended the inauguration of this event and we have pictures and the video footage of his speech.

India's capital welcomes new International Master

Delhi’s Hemant Sharma completed all the requirements to become the new International Master from India after achieving his third and final IM Norm at 36th Zalakaros Chess Festival 2017. Earlier, he achieved his first IM Norm at his home turf during 10th Parsvnath Delhi International Open 2012 and secured his second norm at Isle of Man Open 2016. ChessBase India's youngest author Avathanshu Bhat caught up with Hemant Sharma for an interview. 

In the footsteps of Humpy and Harika: 10-year-old Sahithi Varshini

Sahithi Varshini from Visakhapatnam is a tremendous talent. She learnt chess at the age of eight years. Within two years she was standing on the podium of the Asian Youth under-10 championships in Uzbekistan receiving the gold medal in both classical and blitz sections. This is a story of a father transferring his intense passion and the desire to excel at the game to his daughter. It's a tale of how hard work and dedication can move the mountains. Who will win in Leuven - Magnus or Wesley?

Wesley So won the rapid section of the second leg of the Grand Chess Tour in Leuven with a score of 14 points, two more than MVL. After the rapids, it was time for 18 rounds of blitz spread over two days. On the first day Magnus Carlsen showcased some brilliant bit of chess and scored 7.5/9 tying for the top spot on combined rankings with Wesley So on 18.5 points. Vishy Anand recovered will in blitz after two losses to score 5.0/7 in the remaining rounds. It is going to be a race to the finish line between two of the best players of our generation. Who will win - Magnus or Wesley?

13-year-old Prithu Gupta makes his maiden IM norm

Prithu Gupta started chess around four years ago. The 13-year-old worked hard consistently and achieved something truly special at the Silver Lake Open 2017 in Serbia a few days ago. The boy from Delhi made his maiden International Master norm. He also gained 137 Elo points and is now rated 2293. In this article apart from a some information about the tournament, you also get to see two of Prithu's deeply annotated games. From them you can clearly understand that the boy has huge talent and potential.

2692 at 22! Meet India number three Vidit Gujrathi

Just within a few years of becoming a Grandmaster, Vidit Gujrathi has established himself as one of the best players in not only India but also the world. Recently, he was able to book a spot for himself at the Chess World Cup by clinching a bronze at the Asian Individual Championship. Also, he is merely a stone's throw away from reaching the 2700 rating mark, a feat only three Indians have been able to achieve so far. To get to know this 22-year-old genius better, ChessBase India's Aditya Pai caught up with Vidit in his hometown of Nashik.

Grand Chess Tour Leuven Day two: Wesley So continues to lead

Wesley So has shown great domination in the Leuven leg of the Grand Chess Tour 2017. He defeated Jobava and Anand on day two to maintain his two point lead over Magnus Carlsen and MVL. Vishy Anand didn't particularly have a great day. His win over Ivanchuk was compensated by losses against Aronian and Wesley So. Being a rapid event, the games are filled with interesting moments, mistakes and even blunders. Here's all the action from the day two of the rapid event.

An hour of private training with a 2680 GM (1/2)

In form it was an interview, but in substance it was a private tutorial that IM Sagar Shah received from GM Sasikiran who had just won the 52nd Capablanca Memorial 2017. Before leaving for the World Teams, Sasi found some time to discuss his games from Cuba where he scored 6.5/10 and remained undefeated. Grand Chess Tour Leuven - Wesley So leads, Anand beats Nepo

The Grand Chess Tour 2017 has begun. The first leg held a few days ago was won by Magnus Carlsen. In the second leg, we move to Leuven in Belgium and Vishy Anand is back in action. The event is going to witness nine rounds of rapid play (25 + 10) and eighteen rounds of blitz. On the first day three rounds of rapid chess were played and Wesley So emerged as the sole leader by beating Magnus Carlsen. Anand scored 50% - he drew with Anish Giri, lost to Vladimir Kramnik and won against Ian Nepomniachtchi. A summary of entire day's play, beautiful pictures and brief annotations.

National Challengers 2017 is now open to all

This year the National Challengers 2017 was going to be a very strong event as the AICF along with the organizers had decided to restrict the entries to only four selected players from every state and players rated above 2200 Elo in open and above 1800 Elo in the women's section. However, in the central council meeting of AICF it was decided that these restrictions will be relaxed and all the players can participate provided the name is recommended by their state associations. So the event is open to all and you can now book your accommodation and travel through the ChessBase India travel solution.

Three rating tournaments in a span of 20 days!

Sivakasi—the crackers city of India witnessed a chess festival of sorts when the 3rd Hatsun Idhayam FIDE open, Sivakasi Chess Sparkles and TN State U-25, all three FIDE rated tournaments were held in a span of 20 days! FIDE World Teams 2017: China wins Open; Russia wins Women; India impresses!

We gave it our all, we gave it our best. Yet we did not win a medal at the World Team Championship 2017. Well, that's how sports is! We finished fourth in both open and women's section. In the last round the men's team beat Norway 3-1 and our girls were able to get the better of Azerbaijan with the same margin. In this report we bring you two very interesting games with detailed analysis. World Teams Express: India fourth in both sections

Team India had a great final day at the World Team Championship 2017. The men's team beat Norway 3-1, the women's team beat Azerbaijan with the same score. However, this performance was only good for fourth place in both the sections. While in the men's we missed out by one "match point", in the women's section it was just "1.5 game points". China won the gold in Open and Russia are the women's champion. For now we have the express report with Surya Shekhar Ganguly's take on Indian performance. Full report to follow soon.
