Geneva Grand Prix Round 1 & 2: Hari off to a great start!

Eighteen of the world’s biggest talents in the game of chess have gathered at the Le Richemond Hotel in Geneva for the third leg of the FIDE Grand Prix. The stellar field includes some of the very best in the world including Norway Chess winner, Levon Aronian; world number 6, Shakhriyar Mamedyarov; the Dutch number one, Anish Giri; the women’s number one, Hou Yifan; and many more. The only Indian playing at the event is GM Pentala Harikrishna. Along with a hefty prize fund of € 130,000, on the line are two spots at the Candidates 2018 – the tournament whose winner gets the right to challenge the world champion. Shyam Sundar wins XXV Montcada Open, Iniyan scores a GM norm!

Indian players have always loved playing in the Catalan circuit tournaments and with each passing year, they seem to better their previous year’s performance. At the Montcada Open this year, the Indian Posse dominated the field. While GM Shyam Sundar won the title prize at the event, International Master P. Iniyan bagged the third spot. Commonwealth Chess: Five leaders after five rounds

Thursday was a double round at the Commonwealth Championships currently taking place in Delhi. We are now past the halfway mark in the tournament and we have five leaders with a score of 4.5/5. They are local lads Vaibhav Suri and Abhijeet Gupta, Aravindh Chithambaram, Swapnil Dhopade and Tejas Bakre. As the last four rounds of the tournament remain we are in for an exciting finish as apart from the GMs we also have two women players Bhakti Kulkarni and Swati Ghate who are in the top ten places right now. Anurag Mhamal is 2498 – a whisker away from becoming India’s 48th GM!

International Master from Goa, Anurag Mhamal, had a splendid outing at the XXVII Open Internacional de Gros held in San Sebastian, Spain. Scoring 7.5/9, he not only bagged first place but also a GM norm - his fifth GM norm! But that's not it, he also gained 21 Elo points, taking his rating to 2498. You heard it right, just two more points and Goa will have its first Grandmaster and India, its 48th! And the best part, he's playing at the Benasque Open which started yesterday. So all of this might just happen within the next few days!

A unique match between chess schools of India and Georgia!

On June 29, 2017, a one-of-its-kind match was organised between the Indian Chess School and the Zugdidi Sports Chess Club, Georgia (ZSCC). The match was held online with a time control of 25m+10s. Eight young players - four from each club - participated in this unique event and despite a big rating deficit (ZSCC's 1401 against ICS's 1286), lads representing the Mumbai-based Chess were able to hold their Georgian opponents to a 2-2 draw. 2nd Heritage Schools' Chess Festival

The second edition of the Heritage School Chess Festival was held from 5th-9th June 2017. The event attracted more than 125 students and 20 schools from all across West Bengal. Besides the team, rapid and blitz championships, the tournament also inaugurated India's first chess newspaper! We have a mammoth report by Shahid Ahmed filled with not only pictures and tournament information, but also perfectly captured videos of interesting battles on the board.

Commonwealth Chess Round three: Women power prevails!

Women players at the Commonwealth Chess Championships 2017 are showcasing great form. Swati Ghate defeated GM Deepan Chakravathy, while IM Shyam Nikhil was beaten by WGM Bhakti Kulkarni. Priyanka K refuses to stop and won against CRG Krishna. Mary Ann Gomes, Bhagyashree Thipsay, and many more girls showed positive results in the third round. At the top both the favourites Abhijeet Gupta and Aravindh Chithambaram drew their games. Local boy Vaibhav Suri is in the lead along with five other players. Report from the capital of India.

Is Vishy Anand hinting at retirement?

Ever since his World Championship loss against Magnus Carlsen in 2013, many have speculated about Anand's retirement at different points of time. The former five-time World Champion, however, always dismissed such ideas stating he still enjoys playing the game and has no plans of retirement. But in his interview with GM Maurice Ashley after the final round of Leuven Rapid, Anand really seemed to have lost his spirit. Calling his play mental, he went on to say that it makes no sense to him to play chess like this. Was this a reaction out of despair or is the Indian chess legend seriously hinting at retirement?

3rd "Simply Chess MOMS" Aamantran Rapid & Blitz Tournament was held on 24-June-2017, Saturday in an A.C. hall in Hotel Aamantran, RTC crossroads, Hyderabad. The tournament attracted 120 participants and was organised completely by mothers of chess playing kids in the city. From tournament announcement to the closing ceremony, moms did it all! From Elo 2015 to 2501 in two months!

Delhi boy Vardaan Nagpal went to Europe with a rating of 2015. Being born in 2002, he had a co-efficient of 40. He played in five tournaments - First Saturday IM May and June edition, Salento Open, Balaton GM tournament and Montcada Open (which is in progress) and gained a mind boggling 486 Elo points! His live rating as on today (3rd of July) is 2501. That makes him ranked 28th India, much ahead of many grandmasters and almost all the IMs.
