3rd Menorca Open R1-5: Aryan Chopra and Nihal Sarin in a six-way lead

GM Aryan Chopra and GM Nihal Sarin are the two Indian in a six-pack lead 4.5/5 at 3rd Menorca Open 2024. The remaining four are - GM Kirill Alekseenko (AUT), GM Daniel Dardha (BEL), IM Jan Klimkowski (POL) and GM Max Warmerdam (NED). They are closely followed by a dozen and a half players at 4/5. Aryan will face Nihal in the sixth round. The tournament boasts a field of 43 GMs, 56 IMs, 6 WGMs  and 6 WIMs from 45 countries in a total of 275 players. The total prize fund is €20000. The top three prizes are €5000, €3000 and €2000 along with a trophy each. The first two editions were won by D Gukesh. Will another Indian win the third edition? Women's Candidates 2024 R1: Zhongyi Tan marches her king to victory

GM Zhongyi Tan (CHN) scored the sole win of the first round at FIDE Women's Candidates 2024. She defeated the recent Women's World Championship Challenger - GM Tingjie Lei (CHN). Tingjie had won against Zhongyi in the final stage of the last Women's Candidates 2022-23. The remaining three games - GM Aleksandra Goryachkina - GM Kateryna Lagno, GM Anna Muzychuk (UKR) - IM Nurgyul Salimova (BUL) and GM R Vaishali - GM Koneru Humpy, ended in draws. Candidates 2024 R1: Two exciting draws

FIDE Candidates 2024 is off to a great start. All four games in the Open section ended in draws. However, they were not without an excitement. R Praggnanandhaa launched a determined attack on the kingside against Alireza Firouzja (FRA). However, due to the lack of pieces, his attack did not have the desired effect. Fabiano Caruana (USA) and Hikaru Nakamura (USA) had another exciting battle. Caruana had a decent advantage, however, it was not easy to translate it on the board, especially against a sharp player like Hikaru. FIDE Candidates Tournament 2024 opens in Toronto

FIDE Candidates and Women's Candidates 2024 started yesterday in Toronto, Canada. Our very own cofounder and CEO, IM Sagar Shah had reached few days before the tournament started. In this article we share photos from the opening ceremony and technical meeting. We also mention the names of the players' seconds which are already public knowledge. Also check out some interviews of the players, Gothamchess aka IM Levy Rozman and more. The first round will witness players from the same country facing each other as per the round-robin event rules of the world championship cycle. Aaryan Varshney wins 2nd Noida Rapid Rating Open 2024

Five players - FM Aaryan Varshney, GM Saptarshi RoyChowdhury, IM Aradhya Garg, Kartavya Anadkat and Spandan Srivastava scored 8/9 each at 2nd Noida Rapid Rating Open 2024. IM-elect Aaryan won the tournament due to better tie-break scores. The next four players secured second to fifth place respectively. Aaryan drew against both runners-up - Saptarshi and Aradhya. The top four finishers remained undefeated. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹500000. The top three prizes were ₹50000, ₹25000 and ₹15000 along with a trophy each respectively. The two-day rapid rating tournament was organized by Sara Foundation on 28th and 29th March 2024 at Hierank Business School in Noida, Uttar Pradesh. This is Aaryan's fifth overall and first rating tournament triumph of the year.

Kazakhstan Chess Federation invites you to Aktobe Open 2024 - Vladimir Dvorkovich Memorial 2024. There are two tournaments - Masters (> 2400 for Men and >2200 for Women) and Open (1800-2299). The total prize fund in the Masters is ≈US$ 100000, and for Open ≈US$10165. The top three prizes are ≈US$ 20000, 15600 and 11100. Entry is FREE for GM, IM, WGM, WIM, FM, WFMs in the Masters, provided they meet the rating criteria mentioned above. Conditions are offered to 2600+ players. Grand Chess Tour 2024: Arjun Erigaisi and Vidit Gujrathi named among 13 Wildcards

Grand Chess Tour 2024 season full tour participants names were revealed in February. In a Press Release, GCT announced 13 wildcard participants. Arjun Erigaisi and Vidit Gujrathi will be two Indians among the 13. The first event of the season is Superbet Poland Rapid & Blitz 2024 which will take place in Warsaw from 6th to 13th May. It will feature four full-tour players and six wildcards including - Magnus Carlsen (NOR), Jan-Krzysztof Duda (POL), Wei Yi (CHN), Arjun Erigaisi, Vincent Keymer (GER) and Kirill Shevchenko (ROU). Vidit will be seen in action at SuperUnited Croatia Rapid and Blitz in Zagreb from 8th to 15th July. It will feature seven full-tour players and three wildcards including Magnus, Vidit and Ivan Saric (CRO). A total of four Indians have been announced for GCT 2024 season. Whom are you rooting for? Shuntaro Maeda clinches Kobe Chess Championship 2024 with a 100% score

The Canadian origin, currently residing in Japan, Sheldon's article is full of high quality photos and some interesting moments from his games. Ram Vishal Parab perfect at 1st Tarabai Shinde Rapid Rating Open 2024

13-year-old Ram Vishal Parab scored a perfect 9/9 to win Federal Bank presents Tarabai Shinde Rapid Rating Open 2024. He finished a full point ahead of the field. Five players - Paras Dilip Bhoir, Ankur Mahesh Gokhale, Aakash Sharadchandra Dalvi, Keval Nirgun and FM Vedant Nagarkatte scored 8/9 each. They secured second to sixth place according to tie-breaks. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹250000. The top three prizes were ₹20000, ₹15000 and ₹10000 along with a trophy each respectively. The one-day rapid rating tournament was organized by Mr. Nandakumar TV on 31st March 2024 at Agri Koli Sanskriti Bhavan in Nerul, Maharashtra. Super Knights Chess Academy invites you to 2nd Super Knights International Rating Chess Championship 2024. The second edition is offering a first prize of LKR 150000 and a total prize fund of LKR 1120000. A total of 66 prizes are up for grabs in Classical event. Entry is FREE for GM, IM, WGM, WIM, FM, WFMs and players rated above 1900. Travel grant is offered to GM, IM, WGM, WIMs having rating above 2200 (2000 for Women). Foreign players are given various conditions too. Magnus Carlsen wins GRENKE Chess Classic for the third time

Magnus Carlsen (NOR) defeated Richard Rapport (ROU) 1.5-0.5 in the Playoffs win GRENKE Chess Classic 2024. This is the third time Magnus won this in his career. His previous wins were in 2015 and 2019. In the first Playoff game, Rapport made a tactical error. Magnus had no trouble seizing his opportunity. The finish might have taken slightly longer but then again the time control is only 10' + 2". So time played a role in a prolonged finish. In the second game, Rapport had quite a few chances to deliver the equalizer. He missed them all and it ended up in a draw. Thus, the Artist finished second. Arjun Erigaisi becomes the new India no.1 officially

Arjun Erigaisi became India no.1 officially in FIDE Rating list for April 2024. He becomes the second Indian since D Gukesh to cross Vishy Anand as India no.1 in a published rating list. Gukesh achieved it on 1st September 2023. Seven months later, Arjun did it. Arjun is now World no.9. After Vishy Anand, Pentala Harikrishna and D Gukesh, Arjun became the fourth Indian to make into World top 10. Currently, there are four Indians in top 16, five in top 25, eight in top 41 and ten in top 81. Nodirbek Abdusattorov is the biggest gainer of this list at the top. He gained 15.2 Elo rating points and stormed into World top ten at no.4. Among the Women, there are no changes at the top. Aravindh Chithambaram victorious at 50th La Roda Open 2024

GM Aravindh Chithambaram, IM Siddharth Jagadeesh (SGP) and GM Carlos Daniel Albornoz Cabrera (CUB) scored an unbeaten 7/9 each at 50th La Roda Open 2024. Aravindh won the tournament due to better tie-breaks. Siddharth and Carlos were placed second and third respectively. Carlos drew against Aravindh in the final round in an exciting game. GM Karthik Venkataraman is the only other Indian to make a top ten finish. He scored 7/9 to secure fifth place. The total prize fund of the tournament was €20000. Rinat Jumabayev wins Fagernes GM 2024, Abhimanyu Puranik second

GM Rinat Jumabayev (KAZ) and GM Abhimanyu Puranik scored an unbeaten 7/9 each at Fagernes GM 2024. The Kazakhstan no.1 - Rinat won the tournament due to better tie-breaks, Abhimanyu finished second. Five players - GM Ido Gorshtein (ISR), GM Krishnan Sasikiran, IM Isik Can (TUR), IM Linus Johansson (SWE) and IM Mai Narva (EST) scored 6.5/9 each. They were placed third to eighth respectively. The top three prizes were €2400, €1600 and €800 each. However, prizes were shared equally among equal points scorer. GM Surya Sekhar Ganguly is the only other Indian to make a top ten finish. Playoffs between Magnus Carlsen and Richard Rapport to determine the winner of GRENKE Chess Classic

Magnus Carlsen (NOR) will face Richard Rapport (ROU) in the Playoffs to find the winner of GRENKE Chess Classic 2024. Magnus defeated Vincent Keymer (GER) with his usual grind in a supposed gridlock. He broke it wide open and Keymer succumbed. Magnus drew the tenth round game against Maxime Vachier-Lagrave (FRA). Richard Rapport (ROU) also drew with the Frenchman in Round 9 before finishing the Round-Robin stage with another draw against Daniel Fridman (GER). Keymer, after losing to Magnus, defeated Ding Liren (CHN) twice in a day. He will battle MVL for third place. Playoff games will start today from 3 p.m. local time, 6:30 p.m. IST.
