Women's Candidates 2024 R5: Four draws

GM R Vaishali made another solid draw in the fifth round of FIDE Women's Candidates 2024. It was against GM Anna Muzychuk (UKR) this time. GM Koneru Humpy also had a well contested draw against GM Aleksandra Goryachkina. GM Kateryna Lagno was the only one who had a winning chance against GM Tingjie Lei (CHN). Despite launching the attack correctly, she could not follow through. Tingjie managed to defend correctly and escape with a half point. IM Nurgyul Salimova (BUL) continues her impressive run. She had a hard fought draw against the tournament leader - GM Zhongyi Tan (CHN). She maintains her sole lead 3.5/5. Round 6 starts today at 2:30 p.m. local time, 12 a.m. IST. Candidates 2024 R5: Who dares wins

It is the FIDE Candidates 2024. Every win could potentially make a huge difference. D Gukesh knew that he is facing the lowest rated player of the event, Nijat Abasov (AZE). He is not 100% and already suffered a loss. Although, Gukesh could have ended things earlier, his advantage evaporated and it liquidated into a queen endgame. He kept trying and eventually his opponent crumbled after a near six-hour long battle. Vidit Gujrathi almost made an epic comeback against the world no.2 Fabiano Caruana (USA). He was unable to run away with the king at the right time and he had to settle for a draw. R Praggnanandhaa's preparation slightly rattled Ian Nepomniachtchi. Rupam Mukherjee wins Chess for Everyone Rating Open 2024 in West Bengal

Rupam Mukherjee and Aniket Narayan Biswas scored 8.5/9 each at Chess for Everyone Rating Open 2024 in Purba Medinipur, West Bengal. Rupam won the tournament due to better tie-breaks. Aniket was placed second. They finished a full point ahead of the rest. Shankhadeep Maity and Abir Mitra scored 7.5/9 each. They secured third and fourth place respectively. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹46000 + 63 trophies. The top three prizes were ₹10000 + trophy, ₹7000 and ₹5000 each respectively. This is Rupam's first rating, overall second tournament triumph of the year. The objective of Chess for Everyone tournaments is to have a low entry fee barrier of only ₹250, encourage maximum players to take part in rating tournaments and gain rating. Great players always have their own successful variations in the opening. One of them is the Sharp Arkhangelsk variation which arises after 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 a6 4.Ba4 Nf6 5.O-O b5 6.Bb3 followed by Bb7 and/or Bc5. It’s one of the most powerful opening weapons of great players like Magnus Carlsen and Fabiano Caruana. This variation is very rich, as it is possible to play in three different ways; meaning it’s much more difficult for your opponents to prepare against. Kumar Gaurav superb at 1st Sakatam Rating Open 2024

Kumar Gaurav scored an unbeaten 9/10 to win 1st Sakatam Rating Open 2024. He finished a half point ahead of the field. IM Kaustuv Kundu, Kishan Kumar and Tanmay Rajbongshi scored 8.5/10 each. They secured second to fourth place according to tie-breaks. Kumar defeated Kaustuv in the penultimate round. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹550000. It is the highest ever for a tournament in Northeast India. The top three prizes were ₹100000, ₹70000 and ₹50000 along with a trophy each respectively. The six-day rating tournament was organized by HBM Society and Northeast Chess India from 23rd to 28th March 2024 at Royal Global School in Guwahati, Assam. Arjun Erigaisi wins 3rd Menorca Open 2024

GM Arjun Erigaisi made a quick draw against GM Vladimir Fedoseev (SLO) to win 3rd Menorca Open 2024. After a 3/5 start, Arjun scored a hat-trick of wins to gain sole lead. A draw in the final round would have been enough to win the event via tie-breaks. That is exactly what he did. GM Kirill Alekseenko (AUT) and GM Maksim Chigaev (ESP) also scored the same. They were placed second and third respectively. The total prize fund of the tournament was €20000. The top three prizes were €5000, €3000 and €2000 along with a trophy each. Women's Candidates 2024 R4: Vaishali splits the point with Goryachkina

GM R Vaishali made a solid draw against GM Aleksandra Goryachkina in the fourth round of FIDE Women's Candidates 2024. IM Nurgyul Salimova (BUL) scored her first win of the event against GM Koneru Humpy. The latter decided to open up the position in the middlegame. It only worked in Nurgyul's favor. GM Kateryna Lagno missed a win against GM Zhongyi Tan (CHN). GM Anna Muzychuk (UKR) once again arrived at a winning endgame for her second consecutive game. Unfortunately for her, she could not manage to convert it into a win against GM Tingjie Lei (CHN). Zhongyi maintains her sole lead 3/4, followed by Goryachkina at 2.5/4. Candidates 2024 R4: Gukesh shows his grit against World no.2 Fabiano Caruana

D Gukesh showed his true grit against Fabiano Caruana (USA) in the fourth round of FIDE Candidates 2024. Gukesh made a nice pawn sacrifice which did not give him anything. It was done to prevent any future attack on his kingside. His opponent, Caruana believed that he had an advantage. However, the teenager played precisely, found some nice defensive resources to hold the World no.2 to a draw. Vidit Gujrathi suffered his second consecutive loss of the event. His choice of Ruy Lopez Berlin did not work out as his opponent Ian Nepomniachtchi managed to outplay him. Nepomniachtchi has taken sole lead 3/4. Hikaru Nakamura (USA) and R Praggnanandhaa had an uneventful 24-move draw. Today is a rest day. Round 5 starts tomorrow Tuesday 9th April at 2:30 p.m. local time, 12 a.m. IST. 3rd Menorca Open R7-8: Arjun Erigaisi outplays Aryan Chopra, grabs sole lead, now World no.5

GM Aryan Chopra drew against his coleader, GM Daniel Dardha (BEL) in 20 moves to stay in the lead 6/7. The top seed of 3rd Menorca Open 2024, GM Arjun Erigaisi showcased his fantastic positional understanding beating GM Pranav Anand and joined the above at the top along with GM Max Warmerdam (NED). Arjun outplayed Aryan in the penultimate round to grab sole lead 7/8. He is also now World no.5 in the live ratings. Arjun will face GM Vladimir Fedoseev (SLO) in the final round to determine the winner. Arjun eliminated Fedoseev at FIDE World Cup 2023. Later they drew at Qatar Masters 2023. Women's Candidates 2024 R3: Vaishali bounces back against Nurgyul

GM R Vaishali made a strong comeback in the third round of FIDE Women's Candidates 2024. After losing her second round game against GM Zhongyi Tan (CHN), Vaishali made a nice knight sacrifice to expose her opponent, IM Nurgyul Salimova's (BUL) kingside. There was no immediate win. However, it was certainly not easy to defend in a practical game. The Bulgarian could not manage to find a precise defense and eventually she succumbed. GM Anna Muzychuk (UKR) also was on the verge of a bouncing back after a loss in the previous round. Unfortunately, she could not find the precise winning continuation and the game ended in a draw. Candidates 2024 R3: Praggnanandhaa's refreshing f5 takes Vidit by surprise

R Praggnanandhaa bounced back well in the third round of FIDE Candidates 2024. Despite him suffering a loss in the previous round and his opponent Vidit Gujrathi crushing Hikaru Nakamura (USA), the recent history was in favor of Praggnanandhaa. That gave the teenager the courage to unleash his surprise 4...f5 in the Ruy Lopez. The element of surprise definitely helped him as White needs to be well-prepared to refute it. D Gukesh outplayed Ian Nepomniachtchi. He just needed to find the right break in the endgame to score full point. It would have given him good chances. The remaining two games ended in draws. 3rd Menorca Open R6: Aryan Chopra wins a 136-move marathon against Nihal Sarin, stays at the top

GM Aryan Chopra defeated GM Nihal Sarin to stay in the lead 5.5/6 at 3rd Menorca Open 2024. Aryan had a long-term positional advantage in the middlegame. He could have finished things a lot earlier in the rook and opposite color bishop endgame. Due to being low on the clock, Aryan decided not to take unnecessary risks. He eventually won the game after 136 moves. GM Daniel Dardha (BEL) is Aryan's coleader. Daniel made a short work of GM Kirill Alekseenko (AUT) in just 27 moves. Aryan and Daniel will inevitably clash against each other in the seventh round. Seven players including top seed GM Arjun Erigaisi and GM Pranav Anand are at 5/6 each. GM Zhongyi Tan (CHN) won her second consecutive game at FIDE Women's Candidates 2024. The 16th Women's World Champion defeated GM R Vaishali who did not handle the onslaught on her kingside. GM Aleksandra Goryachkina scored the only other win of the round. Her opponent, GM Anna Muzychuk (UKR) made a tactical error which cost her material. IM Nurgyul Salimova (BUL) drew against GM Tingjie Lei (CHN). GM Kateryna Lagno split the point against GM Koneru Humpy. Humpy will face the tournament sole leader Zhongyi in the third round. Candidates 2024 R2: Praggnanandhaa implodes against Gukesh, Vidit blazes World no.3 Nakamura in 29 moves

The second round of FIDE Candidates 2024 was an eventful one. All four games ended decisively. R Praggnanandhaa blitzed out his preparation against Gukesh and got himself a good position. Gukesh's first deviation made his opponent think. He made a sound bishop sacrifice but could not follow through. Gukesh regrouped his pieces, consolidated his position and won the game. Speaking of bishop sacrifices, Vidit Gujrathi executed one in the Ruy Lopez against Hikaru Nakamura (USA). The Speed King did not respond well to it and folded in 29 moves.
