Arjun Erigaisi drew against M Amin Tabatabaei (IRI) in the third round of 5th Stepan Avagyan Memorial 2024. The defending champion, Samuel Sevian (USA) scored the sole victory of the round against the Armenia no.1 - Haik Martiosyan. Sevian's beautiful creative attack on Haik's kingside made things increasingly difficult for him. It was not easy for him to find a computer-like defense and eventually he succumbed. Sevian and Bogdan-Daniel Deac (ROU) are the two players at 2/3 each. Arjun will face Sevian in the fourth round. Round 4 starts today at 3 p.m. local time, 4:30 p.m. IST. Divya Deshmukh on the verge of winning World Junior 2024 Girls

IM Divya Deshmukh defeated WFM Sachi Jain comfortably in the penultimate round of FIDE World Junior 2024 Girls. Divya got a dominating position in less than 20 moves. She converted it for a full point in the next few moves. WIM Mariam Mkrtchyan (ARM) scored another win to stay in the Gold rush. She has virtually secured a Silver as she is just a half point behind Divya at 8.5/10 and a full point ahead of the rest. WGM Rakshitta Ravi and WIM Ayan Allahverdiyeva (AZE) are at 7.5/10 each. WGM Beloslava Krasteva (BUL) will be Divya's final challenge to win the tournament. Mariam will be up against Rakshitta. In the Open event, GM Mamikon Gharibyan (ARM) defeated IM Rudik Makarian to gain sole lead 8/10. GM Kazybek Nogerbek (KAZ), GM Emin Ohanyan (ARM), IM Daniel Quizon (PHI) and GM Luka Budisavljevic (SRB) are at 7.5/10 each. 26th Asian Youth R1: 23 Indians score a full point

23 out of 35 Indians have scored a full point in the first round of 26th Asian Youth Chess Championships 2024. Two out of three Gold medal winners - Narayani Umesh Marathe and Pratitee Bordoloi have won their respective games. Saathvik Chakravarthy Ramayanam drew against sixth seeded - Adinur Adilbek in Under-8 Open. Unrated Nakshatra Gumudavelly drew with Alisha Bissaliyeva (KAZ). Swayham P Das held FM Gaurang Bagwe to a draw. Swayham will face another compatriot in the second round, IM Harsh Suresh. Rajarajeshwari Yogesh Deshmukh defeated Al-Qudah Rubah (JOR). 14-year-old Aakash G clinches 74th Tamil Nadu State Open Rating 2024 convincingly

Top seed of the tournament, Aakash G scored an unbeaten 8/9 to win 74th Tamil Nadu State Open Rating 2024. He finished a half point ahead of the rest. Nine players scored 7.5/9 each. Out of them, Vignesh B and Sivan S Roshan secured second and third place according to tie-breaks. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹200000. The top three prizes were ₹50000 + trophy, ₹30000 and ₹20000 each. The five-day rating tournament was organized by Coimbatore District Chess Association at Hindusthan College of Arts and Science in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu from 27th to 31st May 2024. Arjun Erigaisi won his second consecutive game at 5th Stepan Avagyan Memorial 2024. He employed the Schliemann Defense in the Ruy Lopez against Shant Sargsyan (ARM). In a complex double rook endgame, Shant captured a pawn incorrectly. It resulted in him having a triple pawn, allowed black's rook to access the newly opened file and turn things in his favor. This win increased Arjun's live rating to 2777.2. He needs to gain 18.5 Elo rating points more to surpass Fabano Caruana (USA) and become World no.3. IM Divya Deshmukh prepared well for her game against WGM Rakshitta Ravi. Divya played 5...Be7 in the Classica French Defence, something she has not played well before. It was a dubious line. However, it is quite difficult to find all correct moves when you are in an uncharted territory. She capitalized well on her opponent's positional mistakes to maintain her sole lead 8/9 at FIDE World Junior 2024 Girls. WIM Mariam Mkrtchyan (ARM) is the only girl at 7.5/9. WFM Sachi Jain seized her advantage against WGM Beloslava Krasteva (BUL) when the latter erred in an already difficult endgame. Divya will face Sachi in the penultimate round. In the Open event, IM Daniel Quizon (PHI) defeated IM Artiom Stribuk to join the lead and make it five-way. The top two boards ended in draws. Round 10 starts today at 3 p.m. IST. India wins nine medals at 26th Asian Youth Rapid 2024

India is off to a great start at 26th Asian Youth Chess Championships 2024. In the Rapid event, the kids won four individual medals - three Gold and a Silver. Narayani Umesh Marathe scored an unbeaten 6/7 to clinch Gold in Under-8 Girls. Pooja Shree R made 6/7 to win Gold in Under-10 Girls. Pratitee Bordoloi scored 6.5/7, remained undefeated and claimed the Gold medal convincingly. Siddhanth Poonja scored 6/7 to secure the Silver medal in Under-12 Open. Narayani and Pratitee became clear champions. Both of them remained invincible. In total India has won nine medals - four individual and five team. They all have chances to win more medals. Arjun Erigaisi makes a great start at 5th Stepan Avagyan Memorial 2024. He played a nice positional game against Robert Hovhannisyan (ARM). Arjun maneuvered his knight beautifully after his opponent created holes in his dark squares. The knight played a key role in Arjun getting the advantage and converting it into a full point. The only other victor of the round is, Bogdan-Daniel Deac (ROU). The Romania no.2 crushed Volodar Murzin in a 21-move miniature. The total prize fund of the tournament is 7450000 AMD (≈ US$ 18400). IM Divya Deshmukh got back to winning ways by scoring a full point against Kseniya Norman in Round 8 of FIDE World Junior 2024 Girls. Divya got an advantage out of the opening and she outplayed her opponent after that. WIM Mariam Mkrtchyan (ARM) and WGM Rakshitta Ravi are trailing the sole leader by a half point at 6.5/8 each. Four girls including two Indians - WFM Rindhiya V and WFM Sachi Jain are at 6/8 each. In the Open event, GM Aleksey Grebnev drew against GM Kazybek Nogerbek (KAZ). Pratitee Bordoloi emerged sole leader with a 100% score 4/4 at 26th Asian Youth Chess Championship 2024 Under-12 Girls. She defeated the top seed of her category - Anastasiya Aleks Barabash in the very first round. Aaradhya Das and Pooja Shree R are in a three-way lead with Alisa Genrietta Yunker with a score 4/4 each in Under-10 Girls category. IM Harsh Suresh and Ajay Santhosh Parvathareddy are in a five-way lead with IM Aldiyar Ansat (KAZ), FM Alexander Khripachenko and FM Eldiar Orozbaev (KGZ) in Under-18 Open. In the Open event, GM Kazybek Nogerbek (KAZ) defeated IM L M S T De Silva (SRI) to emerge sole leader 6/7. Eight players are in pursuit at 5.5/7 each. In a battle of former World Under-16 vs Under-14 champions, GM Pranav Anand outplayed IM Ilamparthi A R to stay in the fray 5.5/7. IM Sambit Panda showed his fantastic positional understanding to beat GM Shawn Rodrigue-Lemieux (CAN). Himal Gusain dominates 11th Dhamso International Rating Open 2024

IM Himal Gusain scored an unbeaten 9.5/10 to win 11th Dhamso International Chess Festival 2024. The top seed of the tournament finished a half point ahead of the rest. IM G M H Thilakarathne (SRI) scored 9/10 to secure second place. G W D M Dabarera (SRI) scored sole 8.5/10 to finish third. Himal drew against the eventual runner-up Thilakarathen and defeated the second runner-up, Dabarera. The total prize fund of the tournament was LKR 1500000. YMCA Madras Physical Activities Committee in association with Rotary Club of Madras Industrial City presents 2nd RCMIC Rotachess Rapid Rating Open 2024. The second edition of this event is offering a first prize of ₹80000 and a total prize fund of ₹600000, an increase by ₹45000. Total 190 prizes. 44 more than the first edition are up for grabs. A grandeur event undoubtedly attracts strong players. World no.44 and India no. 7 GM Aravindh Chithambaram, the reigning National champion and also the winner of the inaugural edition - GM Sethuraman S P, GM Arjun Kalyan, GM Laxman R R, IM Harikrishnan A Ra and IM R Balasubramaniam are the confirmed titled players so far. Chiranjit Manna wins 11th Late Bharatbai Halkude Memorial Below 1800 Rating Tournament 2024

Chiranjit Manna, Arnav Kadam and Dhiman Mitra scored an unbeaten 8/9 at 11th Late Bharatbai Halkude Memorial Below 1800 Rating Tournament 2024 part of LBHM Chess Festival 2024. Chiranjit won the tournament due to better tie-break score, Arnav and Dhiman were placed second and third. The total prize fund of the entire festival was ₹3024234, for Below 1800 Rating tournament it was ₹1224111. The top three prizes were ₹125000, ₹100111 and ₹50000 along with a trophy each respectively. The three-day nine-round tournament was organized by Aryan Enterprises at Dhruv Global School in Pune, Maharashtra from 24th to 26th May 2024. This is Chiranjit's first rating tournament triumph of the year. He went on to win two more rating tournaments in Bangladesh after this.
