D Gukesh missed a great opportunity to beat Ding Liren and gain lead at FIDE World Championship Match 2024, presented by Google. It was certainly not an easy win but at this level he has to seize every single opportunity he is presented. However, he feels good about the game because he outplayed his opponent in the opening and middlegame. The world champion also accepted that fact. Gukesh realizes that he needs to work on converting advantages into a full point. The match has now completed halfway. The most important part is, the Challenger focuses on the positives instead of dwelling on mistakes and outcomes. The next half is certainly going to be interesting. The 5th Elllobregat Open Chess Tournament continues to showcase high-level competition, solidifying its reputation as Spain’s strongest open chess event. After four intense rounds, GM Ido Gorshtein from Israel and GM Mikheil Kekelidze from Georgia are leading with a perfect score of 4/4. Close behind them, six players are in pursuit with 3.5 points, including top seeds like GM Martin Kraemer and GM Cristobal Henriquez Villagra. With six rounds still to play in this 10-round event, the race for the top spot is heating up, promising exciting battles in the rounds ahead. Aaryan Varshney dominates 1st Dewas Rapid Rating Open 2024

IM Aaryan Varshney scored an unbeaten 8.5/9 to win 1st Dewas Rapid Rating Open 2024. He finished a half point ahead of the field. CM Madhvendra Pratap Sharma and GM Sriram Jha scored 8/9 each. They secured second and third place respectively according to tie-breaks. The total prize fund was ₹200000. The top three prizes were ₹25000, ₹15000 and ₹10000 along with a trophy each. The two-day nine-round rapid rating tournament was organized by Dewas District Chess Association at San Thome Academy in Dewas, Madhya Pradesh on 16th and 17th November 2024. 15th KIIT GM Open R1: Vineel and Suthershun draw with GMs

Vineel Radha Karthik Chukka and Suthershun A drew with GM Evgeniy Podolchenko and GM Jacek Stopa (POL) respectively in thefirst round. The 15th edition of KIIT International Chess Festival witnesses the participation of 265 players including 12 GMs, 12 IMs, a WGM and 3 WIMs in Category A from 14 countries across the world including India. The Category B (Below 1900) has a total participation of 266 players. The total prize fund of the festival is ₹6000000, almost double of the last edition. Singapore Open R5: Ilamparthi outplays Pichot, emerges sole leader

IM Ilamparthi A R defeated GM Alan Pichot (ESP) in Round 5 of Singapore Open 2024. The newly crowned National Sub-Junior capitalized on his opponent's inaccuracies in the middlegame. It was the only decisive game among the leaders' pack. He is now followed by 20 players including five Indians - GM Pa Iniyan, GM Karthik Venkataraman, GM Neelotpal Das, WGM Srija Seshadri and IM Sathvik Adiga. IM Raahul V S held GM Szymon Gumularz (POL) to a draw. GM Neelotpal Das won a back and forth battle against the Singapore no.1, GM Jingyao Tin. ​HelpChess Foundation raises Rs. 1 lakh for the Chennai Grandmasters Scholarship

India's chess future is shining brightly, with young talents breaking records on the global stage. Unfortunately, many players face financial barriers that prevent them from achieving their goals. The HelpChess Foundation is committed to helping such players through various initiatives. One such initiative, the 'Chennai Grandmasters Scholarship', was announced during the live streams of the event. It was revealed that all donations received through HelpChess during the tournament would directly support players in need. The response was overwhelming, with over Rs.1 lakh raised from 25 generous contributors. Manoj Samudra is the top donor who received signed cards from the drawing of the lots ceremony by all the players of Chennai Grandmasters 2024. Game 6 has often played a pivotal role in past World Chess Championships. It was observed in past matches, that the winner of Game 6 has gone on to claim the title. Keeping this in mind, fans were excited to see who would win this historically crucial game. Ding chose to play the London system which brought him victory in the last match. While the London System is rarely seen in World Championship matches, Ding decided to try it again for the second time. Gukesh, on the other hand, decided to test his opponent in an unexpected way. A total of six games have been completed at FIDE World Championship Match 2024 presented by Google. Ding Liren could have pushed for a maximum in Game 5 but he did not. The world champion did not realize the big advantage he had in the rook and opposite color bishop endgame. GM Sundararajan Kidambi analyzes the game in detail. Ilamparthi decimates Singh's Gambit Rating Open 2024

IM Ilamparthi A R scored an unbeaten 7.5/8 to win Singh's Gambit Rating Open 2024. Ilamparthi won the tournament in a week after becoming the new National Sub-Junior Open champion. He finished a half point ahead of the competition. Four players - IM Ramnathan Balasubramaniam, IM Praveen Kumar C, GM Laxman R R and Vignesh B scored 7/8 each. They were placed second to fifth respectively according to tie-breaks. The total prize fund was ₹800000. The top three prizes were ₹100000, ₹75000 and ₹60000 along with a trophy each. The four-day eight-round rating tournament was organized by Guru Nanak College in association with Mount Chess Academy at Guru Nanak Matriculation Higher Secondary School in Chennai, Tamil Nadu from 14th to 17th November 2024. Eight players are currently leading Singapore Open Group A with an unbeaten 3.5/4. There are two Indians among them - IM Ilamparthi A R and GM Karthik Venkataraman. The former World Under-14 champion, Ilamparthi defeated GM Kacper Piorun (POL) in the fourth round. The teenager showed fantastic positional understanding as he seized his opportunity when his opponent ignored back-rank weakness, resulting in a doubled pawn. Karthik had an interesting draw in the third round against GM Deepan Chakkravarthy. He defeated IM Muthaiah Al comfortably in the following fourth round. D Gukesh decided to decline a threefold repetition against Ding Liren in Game 6 of FIDE World Championship Match 2024, presented by Google. He wanted to play a few moves and see what happens as he felt that he was not in danger. The Challenger thought that draw was still the most likely result, he wanted to get a long game as there is no game on the following day. Gukesh may not admit that it was a psychological move, one thing is for sure, in this cerebral sport, you have to test your opponent and that is exactly what he did. He did not take a lot of risk. Arjun Erigaisi is now officially rated 2801

Arjun Erigaisi crossed 2800 in live ratings on 24th October at 39th European Chess Club Cup in the fifth round. It has now become official in December FIDE Rating list. His rating is now 2801, making him the second-ever Indian after Vishy Anand to have a published rating of above 2800. Aravindh Chithambaram delivered a phenomenal performance when he won Chennai Grand Masters 2024. He gained 12.1 Elo rating points, taking his rating to 2718 and World no.26. XTX Markets London Chess Classic 2024 R1-2: Vidit Gujrathi wins a messy endgame against Andrew Hong

Vidit Gujrathi started his XTX Markets London Chess Classic 2024 with an unbeaten 1.5/2. He drew the first round game against World Rapid 2013 champion, Shakhriyar Mamedyarov (AZE). In round 2, he defeated Andrew Hong (USA). Vidit described his game as - "A cagey fight, super messy endgame & a little fortune to win the game!" in a tweet. The reason behind describing it as messy is, he could have finished in the endgame much earlier. Nikita Vitiugov (ENG) is the only other player at 1.5/2. Vidit will face Gawain Jones (ENG) in Round 3. He is the sole player who have won both of his games. The tournament is taking place at Emirates Stadium, home of Arsenal FC.
