Senthil Maran K wins Marienbad Open IM Round-Robin 2025

IM Senthil Maran K and IM Michal Konopoka (CZE) scored an unbeaten 6/9 each at Marienbad Open 2025 B2 IM Round Robin at 23rd International Chess Festival part of Czech Tour 2025 series. Senthil won the tournament due to better tie-break scores. Michal was placed second. FM Loek Van der Hagen (NED) scored 5.5/9 to finish third. The top three prizes were CZK 3000, 2000 and 1000 each. GM Anton Korobov (UKR) won the A GM Round Robin tournament. He scored an unbeaten 6.5/9. IM Harshavardhan G B scored 6/9 to secure second place. IM Jonasz Baum (POL) scored 5.5/9 to finish third. Yash Manoj Upadhye scored an unbeaten 9/10 to win Late Shri Manohar Parrikar 3rd Goa GM Category C Below 1700 Rating Tournament 2025. He finished a full point ahead of the field. Six players - Joshua Mark Telles, Joy Kakodkar, Rudresh Fadte, Aarav Arpit Shah, Vansh Rasik Gala and Prakhar Raj scored 8/10 each. They secured second to seventh place respectively according to tie-breaks. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹1300000. The top three prizes were ₹135000, ₹105000 and ₹90000 along with a trophy each respectively. The four-day ten-round Swiss league rating tournament was organized by Goa Chess Association at Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Indoor Stadium in Panaji, Goa from 16th to 19th January 2025. Tata Steel 2025 R10: Gukesh wins two in-a-row, Praggnanandhaa bounces back

The 18th World Champion, D Gukesh is in a terrific form. He scored his second consecutive win at 87th Tata Steel Masters 2025. Gukesh surprised his opponent with 1...d6 in response to 1.e4. Max Warmerdam (NED) opted for 2.g3. Gukesh got a bit surprised momentarily but he realized that he must have prepared it for some other game before. A positional mistake of incorrect bishop trade offer with Gukesh's bad bishop, turned things in the leader's way. He converted his advantage smoothly to maintain his sole lead 7.5/10. R Praggnanandhaa bounced back with a win against Vladimi Fedoseev (SLO) in a wild game. Nodirbek Abdusattorov (UZB) also had a crazy battle against Alexey Sarana (SRB) to stay in pursuit 7/10. Pentala Harikrishna saved a tough endgame against the World no.2, Fabiano Caruana (USA). Leon Luke Mendonca drew with Anish Giri (NED). Today is the last rest day. Kashish Manoj Jain prevails at Prague Open 2025, Harshavardhan third

FM Kashish Manoj Jain scored 8/9 to win Prague Open A 2025 at 23rd International Chess Festival part of Czech Tour 2025 series. Kashish finished a full point ahead of the competition. Six players - IM Damian Lewtak (POL), IM Harshavardhan G B, IM Tomas Kulhanek (CZE), IM Senthil Maran K, FM Kim Yew Chan (MAS) and IM Matyas Marek (CZE) scored 7/9 each. They secured second to seventh place respectively according to tie-breaks. The top three prizes in A Open were CZK 20000 + trophy, 15000 and 10000 each respectively. 12-year-old CM Antoni Radzimski (POL) scored a perfect 7/7 to win C Rapid event. Swapnaneel Dowerah triumphs at DDCA Golden Jubilee Rapid Rating Open 2025

Swapnaneel Dowerah scored an unbeaten 8/9 to win DDCA Golden Jubilee Rapid Rating Open 2025. Five players - Rintu Brahma, Abhirup Saikia, Neelabh Jyoti Borthakur, Bijit Chetia and Dhruv Phukan scored 7.5/9 each. They were placed second to sixth respectively according to tie-breaks. Swapnaneel defeated Rintu in the penultimate and drew with Abhirup in the last round. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹160000. The top three prizes were ₹20000, ₹15000 and ₹13000 along with a trophy each respectively. The two-day nine round Rapid Rating Open tournament was organized by Duliajan Anchalik Chess Association in association with Dibrugarh District Chess Association at St. Xavier's H S School in Duliajan, Assam on 11th and 12th January 2025. Tata Steel 2025 R9: Gukesh outplays Leon, emerges sole leader

D Gukesh defeated his compatriot, Leon Luke Mendonca in Round 9 of 87th Tata Steel Masters 2025 to gain sole lead 6.5/9. The world champion shared that he did not show anything special in the opening. However, a few positional inaccuracies by his opponent, allowed him to seize his advantage and outplay him. Gukesh's coleader, R Praggnanandhaa suffered his first loss of the event against Anish Giri (NED). Nodirbek Abdusattorov (UZB) drew with World no.2, Fabiano Caruana (USA). Vladimir Fedoseev (SLO) defeated Pentala Harikrishna to join the chase with Abdusattorov. In the Challengers, IM Divya Deshmukh had a solid draw against GM R Vaishali. GM Iniyan Pa scored an unbeaten 8.5/9 to win 9th Johor Open 2025. He finished a whopping 1.5 points ahead of the rest and won the tournament with a round to spare. IM V S Raahul and IM Bo Li (CHN) scored 7/9 each. They secured second and third place respectively according to tie-breaks. The top three prizes were RM 10000 (≈₹196810), 6000 (≈₹118086) and 4000 (≈₹78724). The six-day nine round Rating Open tournament was organized by Johor Chess Association at Fairview International School in Johor Bahru, Malaysia from 18th to 23rd January 2025. Iniyan has won two consecutive Classical rating tournament he played in 2025 - first 15th Chennai GM Open 2025, now this.

Adham Fawzy clinches 1st Kuwait International Chess Festival 2025 Masters, Stany third

GM Adham Fawzy (EGY) scored 7.5/9 to win 1st Kuwait International Chess Festival 2025 Masters. He finished a half point ahead of the rest. GM Shahin Lorparizangeneh (IRI) and GM Stany G A scored 7/9 each. They secured second and third place respectively according to tie-breaks. The top three prizes were US$ 2400, $1800 and $1200 each. 9-year-old Krithik Muthukumar won the Challengers section scoring an unbeaten 8/9. 14-year-old Kushagra Jain scored 7.5/9 to secure second place in the Rapid Rating Open. FM Kumar Gaurav, Iftikar Alom Mazumdar, Apollosana Mangang Rajkumar and Rahul Gurung scored 8/9 each at Shephali Memorial Rating Open 2025. Kumar won the tournament due to better tie-break scores. The remaining three were placed second to fourth respectively. Kumar drew with both runners-up. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹350000. The top three prizes were ₹50000, ₹35000 and ₹25000 along with a trophy each respectively. Fujairah Global Chess Championship Announced with $125,000 Prize Fund

Fujairah is set to become the new hub of chess, as it gears up to host the Fujairah Global Chess Championship at the state-of-the-art Fujairah Chess and Culture Club, home to the world’s largest chess queen. The tournament boasts a total prize fund of $125,000 and promises to be one of the strongest open chess tournaments ever organized. The event will be held across three categories. The Superstars Tournament will feature players with a rating of 2600 and above, making it an exceptionally strong open tournament. Additionally, there will be a Masters Tournament and a Youth Open to cater to players across different skill levels. The competition is scheduled to take place from August 24 to September 3, 2025, at the Fujairah Chess and Culture Club. Read this article for full details!

India hosted the 21st International Solving Contest on January 19th, bringing together over 200 solvers across four cities: Mumbai, Bhopal, Chennai, and Bengaluru. The contest featured three categories – highly experienced, less experienced, and junior – catering to solvers of all levels. ChessBase India successfully organised the Mumbai and Bhopal legs of the event, with Dr. Vidhi Karelia and Satanick Mukhuty leading the efforts. 12 Champions crowned at the 13th National Schools Chess Championship 2025

The 13th National Schools Chess Championship 2025 took place from 17th-21st January at the Sri Prakash Synergy School in Peddapuram, Andhra Pradesh. 12 Champions were crowned across various age categories in this 9-round chess tournament with a swiss format! 1200+ players took part in this mega event. Shreyanshi Jain from Rajasthan was the only player across all the categories to score a perfect 9/9! She won the National Schools Under-7 Girls title, and won a ChessBase video course of Gukesh signed by the World Champion Gukesh himself.
