Vantika Agrawal takes on 17 challengers in a thrilling simul

On the 15th of February, IM Vantika Agrawal took on 17 challengers in an exciting simultaneous exhibition at the ChessBase India Chess Club in Phoenix Marketcity Mall, Kurla. The simul featured players from different age groups and ratings, all eager to test their skills against a titled player. All the challengers enjoyed this rare opportunity to face the Olympiad Gold medalist. In the end, Vantika delivered an impressive performance with 15 wins and just 2 losses. Indian Men and Women's team receive National Team of the Year at Sportstar Aces Awards 2025

On 15th February 2025, Sportstar premiered the Sportstar Aces Awards 2025 on their youtube channel. IM Divya Deshmukh received Sportswoman of the year (Non-Olympic). She won the World Junior Girls Championship 2024, double Gold medal (individual and team) at 45th Chess Olympiad Women. Indian Men and Women's team received National Team of the Year for winning historic Gold medals at 45th Chess Olympiad held in Budapest, Hungary. GM Vidit Gujrathi and GM Srinath Narayanan were present to receive the men's award, Divya, IM Vantika Agrawal and GM Abhijit Kunte were present to receive the women's category award. Monaco GP Round 3: Humpy, Sara, Batkhuyag and Lagno share the lead

GM Koneru Humpy drew with IM Batkhuyag Munguntuul (MGL) in Round 3 of FIDE Monaco GP 2025. They maintained their lead with IM Sarasadat Khademalsharieh (ESP) and GM Kateryna Lagno. GM Harika Dronavalli ended her losing streak by splitting the point with Lagno. Sara drew with GM Elisabeth Paehtz (GER). GM Aleksandra Goryachkina and GM Alexandra Kosteniuk (SUI) are the only two victors of the round. They defeated IM Bibisara Assaubayeva (KAZ) and GM Zhongyi Tan (CHN) respectively. Tania Sachdev receives BBC Changemaker of the Year 2024 award

IM Tania Sachdev received BBC Changemaker of the Year award at BBC Indian Sportswoman of the Year 2024 award ceremony. She is synonymous as a commentator at various top level chess tournaments, both online and over-the-board. Not only that, Tania has also won the Gold at the 45th Chess Olympiad 2024 in Budapest, Hungary. She scored an unbeaten 3.5/5 at that event, contributing valuable points towards the Gold. Before Tania, GM Koneru Humpy, the reigning two-time World Rapid Women's champion, won BBC Indian Sportswoman of the year award in 2021. Monaco GP Round 2: Humpy shares the point with Paehtz

GM Koneru Humpy drew with GM Elisabeth Paehtz (GER) in Round 2 of FIDE Monaco GP 2025. GM Aleksandra Goryachkina was pressing against GM Alexandra Kosteniuk (SUI). However, she alleviated the pressure and the game ended in a draw. The Women's World Championship Challenger, GM Zhongyi Tan (CHN) missed a winning opportunity against IM Batkhuyag Munguntuul (MGL). GM Harika Dronavalli made a one-move blunder against IM Sarasadat Khademalsharieh (ESP). The game was otherwise heading towards a draw. Kushagra Mohan decimates 2nd G H Raisoni Memorial Amravati Rapid Rating Open 2025

IM Kushagra Mohan scored an unbeaten 8.5/9 to win 2nd G H Raisoni Memorial Amravati Rapid Rating Open 2025. He finished a half point ahead of the rest. 13-year-old Nihaan Pohane scored 8/9 to secure second place. Eight players scored 7.5/9 each. Out of them, CM Vaibhav Jayant Raut was placed third according to tie-breaks. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹200000. The top three prizes were ₹50000 + trophy, ₹30000 and ₹20000 each respectively. The one-day nine round Rapid Rating Open tournament was organized by G H  Raisoni Sports and Cultural Foundation and Kalpana Prakash Welfare Foundation at G H Raisoni University in Amravati, Maharashtra on 9th February 2025. This is Kushagra's first rating tournament triumph of the year. We often get to know about various tournaments, opportunities, accomplishments from various parts of South East Asia, thanks to him. He brings us an update about a 16-year-old talented Indonesian youth named - Satria Cahaya Duta. He scored his maiden IM-norm at 45th Chess Olympiad while playing on board no.2. As of this writing, he is at second place with a score of 3.5/4 at Indonesia IM Chess Tournament 2025. Monaco GP Round 1: Humpy gets the better of Harika

GM Koneru Humpy made a winning start against GM Harika Dronavalli in Round 1 of FIDE Monaco GP. This is their first decisive result in a Classical rated in over 8.5 years. Harika's mistake in the rook and minor piece endgame proved costly for her against the reigning World Rapid Women's Champion. IM Batkhuyag Munguntuul (MGL) seized her opportunity against former Women's World Champion - GM Alexandra Kosteniuk (SUI). GM Kateryna Lagno defeated the winner of the previous leg, GM Aleksandra Goryachkina. The latter incorrectly captured a pawn in the rook endgame which turned things in her opponent's favor. Saparmyrat Atabayev wins 2nd Al-Beruniy International Chess Tournament Futures 2025, Iniyan second

IM Saparmyrat Atabayev (TKM) and GM Iniyan Pa scored 7/9 each at 2nd Al-Beruniy International Chess Tournament Futures 2025. Saparmyrat won the tournament on tie-breaks. Iniyan was placed second. They drew their fifth round battle against each other. The total prize fund of the Futures group was US$ 13000. The top three prizes were US$ 3500, 2500 and 2000 along with a trophy each. GM Mukhiddin Madaminov (UZB) won the Masters section scoring 6.5/9. Total prize fund of the Masters group was US$ 37700. Top three prizees were $10000, $8000 and $6000. GM Bardiya Daneshvar (IRI) became the winner of the Challengers section. He scored an unbeaten 6/9. Total prize in the Challengers was US$ 18000. Top three prizes were $5000, $4000 and $3000.

Humpy and Harika set to battle at FIDE Monaco GP

The third leg of the FIDE Women's Grand Prix 2024-25 will start today in Monte Carlo, Monaco. GM Harika Dronavalli will play her first GP event of the season. She will clash with the reigning World Rapid Women's Champion - GM Koneru Humpy in the very first round. The ten-player round-robin tournament will also feature GM Zhongyi Tan (CHM), GM Aleksandra Goryachkina, GM Kateryna Lagno, IM Bibisara Assaubayeva (KAZ), GM Alexandra Kosteniuk (SUI), IM Sarasadat Khademalsharieh (ESP), GM Elisabeth Paehtz (GER) and IM Batkhuyag Munguntuul (MGL). Indonesian Grandmaster Tournament 2025 is now underway

Two round-robin tournaments started on 16th February in an Indonesian resort city of Bandung. IM Taher Yoseph Theolifus (INA) and IM Junhyeok Lee (KOR) are the two players who both of their first two games in the GM group. GM Sethuraman S P has made a steady start by sharing the points in his first two games. In the IM group, GM Vitaliy Bernadskiy (UKR) is the only player who has won both of their games. Saptorshi Gupta wins Auckland Waitangi Weekender 2025

Saptorshi Gupta and Ilias Angelo Baker (NZL) scored an unbeaten 5/6 each at Auckland Waitangi Weekender 2025. Saptorshi shared first place with Ilias as ties were not broken in this event. Four players - FM Alphaeus Wei Arn Ang (NZL), FM Leonard J McLaren (NZL), David Junyang Zhu (NZL) and WFM Nadia Braganza (NZL) scored 4.5/6 each. They shared third place. Saptorshi defeated the eventual second runner-up, Alphaeus in the last round to become the champion. The top three prizes were NZ$700, $300 and $200 each. The prizes were shared between the players of same point group. The three-day six-round tournament was organized by IA Keong Ang (NZL) at Auckland Chess Centre in Auckland, New Zealand on 6th, 8th and 9th February 2025. B Vignesh triumphs at 1st Star Chess Foundation Rating Open 2025

B Vignesh and M Mridav scored an unbeaten 7.5/8 each at 1st Star Chess Foundation Rating Open 2025. Top seed of the tournament, Vignesh became champion due to better tie-break score, Mridav had to be content with second place. Four players - IM Ramnathan Balasubramaniam, B Selvamurugan, Saisarvesh Ar and FM Ayushh Ravikumar scored 7/8 each. They were placed third to sixth respectively. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹400000, having 100 cash and 105 cups. The top three prizes were ₹40000, ₹30000 and ₹19000 along with a trophy each. The tournament was organized by Star Chess Foundation at JJ College of Engineering and Technology in Trichy, Tamil Nadu from 8th to 11th February 2025. Vidit Gujrathi wins 34th PSPB Inter Unit Rapid Individual 2025

GM Vidit Gujrathi (ONGC) scored 7/9 to win 34th PSPB Inter Unit Rapid Individual Chess Tournament 2025. GM Pranav Venkatesh (IOC-A) also scored the same 7/9. However, Vidit won the tournament on tie-breaks. Both Vidit and Pranav suffered a loss each. Vidit lost against the legend, GM Sasikiran Krishnan (ONGC) in Round 7. Pranav lost against the eventual champion, Vidit in the fifth round. Four players - GM Raunak Sadhwani (IOC-A), GM Surya Sekhar Ganguly (IOC-A), GM G N Gopal (BPCL) and GM Sethuraman S P (ONGC) scored 6.5/9 each. They were placed third to sixth respectively according to tie-breaks. This is the second consecutive edition Vidit as he won the 33rd edition in 2023.
