Dubai Open: Vidit Gujrathi's Squeeze

43% of the players playing in Dubai are Indians. Go figure. After the Sharjah Masters, the Dubai Open 2017 has turned into a mini-India as strong grandmasters and young talents compete for ratings and norms. Vidit Gujrathi is playing impressive chess to be the joint leader with 6.0/7, with two others. Report.

3rd Karnataka State Open Rapid Tournament

Universal Chess Academy (R) and Rainbow Club Kidz Library, Malleswaram, Bangalore invited players for their 3rd Karnataka State Open Rapid Chess tournament which was conducted on 2-April-2017, it was held at Shri R Gundu Rao Sports Complex, Sirur Park Road, Sheshadripuram, Bangalore which was opposite to extremely famous Mantri Mall.  It was one day exciting rapid tournament of 9 rounds with INR 50,000.00/- cash prizes and 32 trophies for age category winners. It was won by our very own Arvind Shastry (ELO 2272) by scoring whopping 8.5/9 points. Total 278 players participated including IM Hegde Ravi Gopal.

Four golds, five silvers and three bronze for India at Asian Youth 2017

The Asian Youth 2017 ended in a huge success for the Indian contingent. We won four gold medals, five silver and three bronze. 12 medals in all. Uzbekistan with three golds and ten medals in all settled for the second place. On Sunday the blitz event will decide the overall winner of the Championship with the culmative medal tally of rapid, classical and blitz. Chief Arbiter Gopakumar Sudhakaran sends us a brief report.

91 out of the 214 participants at the Dubai Open 2017 are Indians. IM Santos Latasa Jaime from Spain is the leader with 4.0/4, but four Indians are right on his heels with 3.5/4. They include S.L. Narayanan, Vidit Gujrathi, Abhijeet Gupta and Vignesh N.R. Narayanan's win over Anton Guijarro was pretty spectacular and we have annotated the game quite extensively. A pictorial report from UAE.

Delhi and 48 hours of fun with Jacob!

Jacob Aagaard was in India for his book tour. After Mumbai and Ahmedabad, the attention now shifted to the capital city of Delhi. Apart from having the two mandatory trainings in the morning, Delhi was the only city to have two open sessions in the evening. Many strong players attended it, including GM Abhijeet Gupta, as Jacob entertained and taught the audience with his knowledge wit and humour. Not to forget we also made him sing a song! Rucha Pujari's never-say-die spirit!

Rucha Pujari had hit a plateau, the Women International Master title was so close yet so far. During the hunt to complete the requirements, she faced various technical difficulties. Determined to play best chess possible, she took part in both the Aeroflot Open B and C categories this year (only player to do so). She persevered in spite of tough opposition and successfully completed all the requirements. In this interview, Rucha tells us about the backstory of becoming a WIM and her immediate goals.

R.B. Ramesh is a legend when it comes to chess training in India. He was the reason why Indian won its first team medal at the Olympiad in 2014.
