A world class chess institute set up in Malaysia

The Institute of Chess Excellence (ICE) has been set up in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia. With the support of the newly elected Malaysian Chess President it has become the national chess academy of the country. World class facilities exist at the Institute and regular training sessions along with tournaments on a monthly basis have been planned. ICE in Malaysia is a pilot project of the Asian Chess Federation (ACF). If this turns out to be a successful experiment, the ACF would like to set up similar institutes all over Asia.

Women Challengers 2017 Round 7: Lakshmi joins Soumya at the top

After seven rounds at the National Women's Challengers 2017 we have one expected leader and one completely unexpected! Top seeded Soumya Swaminathan is on 6.0/7 and she is joined by 30th seed of the event Laskhmi C. The girl from Tamil Nadu is already gaining 117 Elo points! Mind boggling indeed. The experienced players are back at the top. Kiran, Manisha Mohanty, Nisha Mohota, Mary Ann Gomes, Bhakti Kulkarni and Meenakshi.S are all on 5.5/7. Round eight will witness top board fight between the two leaders Soumya and Lakshmi. As of now here's the round seven report from Mysore.

Akash Dalvi triumphs at the "Kasparov Returns!" Online Blitz

After announcing the "Gary Kasparov Returns" U-2200 Online Blitz Tournament, 114 chess enthusiasts have given their entries to participate in the online tournament. The event started at 8 pm, without any delay. Fifteen-year-old  Aakash Dalvi of Maharashtra scored 8.5 out of 9 points to secure the first place. The final standings will be published within a week after scanning all the games and ensuring that no cheating was done. Here is the provisional standings list. 

Women Challengers 2017 Round 5+6: Why you mustn't offer a draw!

There's a famous saying "No one has ever won a game by resigning!" 100% true, we would like to add, "No one has ever won a game by offering a draw!" While both statements absolutely obvious, a lot of chess have been guilty of committing this error. In the sixth round it was WGM Kiran Manisha Mohanty who did that against Mahalakshmi by offering a draw in a completely winning pawn endgame. We have the analysis. On May 21, 2017, in the fourth episode of their first season, Tamil talk show, Weekend with Stars invited the Tiger from Madras, Vishy Anand and gave the audience a comprehensive peek into the life of India’s first Grandmaster. Women Challengers Round 4: And the Commonwealth Champion falls!

Every round of the National Women Challengers witnesses a huge upset. In the fourth round it was the in-form, Commonwealth Champion Swati Ghate who had to bite the dust against the 18-year-old Divya Lakshmi. Soumya Swaminathan registered a clinical win and so did K. Few weeks ago, Gary Kasparov has announced his return to competitive chess. To honor the return of the legend, ChessMine and ChessBase India are conducting "Kasparov Returns!" Women Challengers Round 2+3: Upsets all around!

Seven players including top seeded Soumya Swaminathan are in the lead with a perfect score after three rounds at the National Challengers 2017. Two rounds were played on Saturday and we witnessed huge number of upsets. Seasoned players like Nisha Mohota, Swathi Ghate, S. Meenakshi, Michelle Catherina and many others found the going tough against upcoming talents. "We must have more women tournaments in India and a grandmaster coach", says Soumya.

Four days after announcing the Kasparov Returns! Under 2200 Online Blitz Tournament that is to be held tomorrow (July 23), the tournament has received 50 entries. The tournament is being held in cooperation between ChessMine and ChessBase India and will take place in the Vishy Anand Arena on Playchess download client. Two Round Robin norm tournaments for Indians in Australia in December 2017

Scoring three IM and GM norms is a mandate of FIDE for winning those titles. But the route that leads to such glory is not an easy one. Picking the right tournaments also plays a big part in this. To this end, the Young Masters tournament, held in Adelaide and the Australasian Masters held in Melbourne, Australia, attempts to help players by organizing Round Robin tournaments for both IM and GM norms. The organizers would like to invite Indian players at the event.
