Rathanvel, Manish and Niharika lead National Under 17

Dr. N. Mahalingam 28th National Under-17 Open and Girls Chess Championships 2017 began on 24th October 2017 at Kumaraguru College of Technology in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. World Youth Silver Medal winners Arjun Erigaisi and Sakshi Chitlange are the top seeds of the tournament in Open and Girls category respectively. Over 170 players across the country are participating in a 9-day, 11 round tournament. Here is a report of rounds 1 to 4 with photographs by K Sathish Kumar. Rathanvel and Manish Cristiano lead in the open section with 4.0/4, and Niharika is the sole leader in girls section with the same score.

Hoogeveen Matches 05: Adhiban makes an Anand-like comeback!

In Hoogeveen yesterday, Ivanchuk held Wei Yi to a draw yet again. This means the Chinese prodigy will have to win his final game by all means if he wishes to stay alive in the match. But an even bigger news for Indian chess fans was Adhiban's victory over Jorden van Foreest. After two consecutive losses, things were looking bleak for Adhiban. But with his ever-positive attitude, Adhiban overcame this debacle with a smile and has now levelled scores against the Dutchman yet again. Kaustuv Kundu wins 1st Nitai Ghosh Memorial 2017

After performing brilliantly in World Youth 2017 with a performance rating of 2433 and increasing his rating by 112 ELO points, 18-year-old Kaustuv Kundu continued his momentum by winning two consecutive tournaments. Kaustuv remained undefeated throughout the tournament in Jalpaiguri, West Bengal and won the event. Hoogeveen Matches 04: Adhiban’s pawn storm backfires

The fourth round of the Hoogeveen Matches struck disaster for Adhiban Baskaran. Because of some overambitious play on the part of the Indian, he suffered several weaknesses and was a pawn down after being dragged into an endgame by his opponent Jorden van Foreest. With this loss -- his second in a row --Adhiban is now a full point behind and will have to strike back as soon as he can to level scores. The Chinese prodigy, Wei Yi, is in a similar situation as Adhiban in his match against Vassily Ivanchuk. With just two rounds to go, we predict some violent chess in the forthcoming games. Hoogeveen Matches 03: Van Foreest levels scores with Adhiban

It was quite an intriguing day at the Hoogoveen Matches yesterday evening. Halfway down the line, Jorden van Foreest levelled scores with the Indian number five by winning the third round game with the black pieces. The position was around equal, even though quite complicated, when Adhiban lost the thread and blundered an exchange. Interestingly, the other game, between Vassily Ivanchuk and Wei Yi, also ended decisively and also featured a blunder - and a much more dramatic one. The Chinese teenager inexplicably blundered an entire rook in an attempt to break through to his opponent's king. Here's an in-depth coverage of the happenings.

Vidit Gujrathi feted with SJAM sportsman of the year award 2017

"It was a very exciting and action packed day" is how Vidit Gujrathi describes his Monday, 23rd of October, one day before he turned 23 years old. The India number three was in Mumbai to receive the best sportsman award for 2017 from Sports Journalists Association of Mumbai (SJAM). Apart from the award he also did an interview at the Firstpost office. Hoogeveen Matches 02: Adhiban takes the lead

After his slip in the last round, the ever-optimistic Adhiban came back with a bang in his second game against Jorden van Foreest! With the white pieces in the calms of the Italian opening, the Dutch teenager messed up mirroring Adhiban's 15...Na5 with 16. Nh4 and gifted the Indian a pawn. Now that Adhiban had the better position and an extra pawn for the second time in the match, he ensured not to give his opponent any chance to wriggle out and won the game in 72 moves. Hoogeveen Matches 01: Adhiban’s Bang and Whimper

Adhiban Bhaskaran kicked off with a scintillating knight sacrifice in his match against Jordan van Foreest at the Hoogeveen Masters. And just when he seemed to be cruising towards victory, the Dutchman returned the blow with a crafty exchange sac to try setting up a fortress. In the other game of the match, Chucky was impressed both by the game and Wei Yi's opening. "It was an interesting game," he said in his post-game comments. In the open tournament, Tania Sachdev played some thrilling chess to win against her much lower rated opponent. They both are the most talented youngsters of their countries at the moment. Jorden van Foreest takes on B. Adhiban in six game match at Hoogeveens in Netherlands. It will be very interesting to see who comes out on top as both of them have quite a dynamic and aggressive style of play. The other match that will also take place simultaneously with this one is Ivanchuk against Wei Yi. They will also play six games against each other.
