3rd Mumbai IIFLW under-13 Round 1+2: It's a tournament with life!

When someone asks which is highest prize money junior tournament in the world, people tend to think it must be held somewhere in USA, Europe or the middle-east. Turns out it's held in India, in the financial capital of the country - Mumbai. This year the IIFLW under-13 International is being held from the 29th of December to 7th of January 2018. The top seed is D. Gukesh (2362) who seems to be playing one tournament after another absolutely non stop. He will be facing stiff competition from the likes of Pranav, Leon, Anuj, Divya and the others. In this report we bring to you the entire action from rounds one and two along with some excellent pictures by Amruta Mokal.

World Blitz Championship: Anand adds another feather to his cap in Riyadh; wins bronze in Blitz

Vishy Anand ended the year with a bang at the King Salman World Rapid and Blitz Championships in Riyadh, yesterday. After winning the title of the world rapid champion, Anand did not sit back and celebrate. He went on with just as much energy to clinch another bronze medal at the blitz championship. Magnus Carlsen was another player who really shined in the blitz event. After a slightly off day on day 1, the classical world champion came back with 9.0/10 on day 2 to bag the title prize. For a man who is 48 years old playing at the World Rapid and Blitz is a huge challenge. You have to play 36 games (plus tiebreaks if you are fighting for the first spot) against some of the best players in the world, who are half your age, have loads of stamina and in general are better suited towards the short format of the game. The odds were against Vishy Anand, but he delivered! And he delivered huge! Two medals at the World Rapid and Blitz 2017 - gold in rapid and bronze in blitz! We spoke to Vishy Anand after his victory and, to put it mildly, he was ecstatic with his performance!

Hoa Nguyen makes it a hat-trick in India!

Vietnamese GM Hoa Nguyen now has one of the most enviable records on Indian soil. He has won a hat trick of grandmaster events in India. First one was the KIIT open in Bhubaneshwar, next one was the Mayors Cup in Mumbai and now the Bhopal International 2017. The last round began with a five way tie, but Hoa Nguyen made sure that he won the top prize by beating GM Ivan Rozum. The second place was captured by Malaysian Li Tian Yeoh, while the third place went to GM Tran Tuan Minh. Full final report with pictures, videos and more. 

The Carlsen - Inarkiev controversy

Magnus Carlsen was playing Ernesto Inarkiev in the first round of the World Blitz 2017. Magnus gave a check to Inarkiev's king. However, instead of moving the king or capturing the rook, Inarkiev gave a counter check to his opponent's king. Of course, this was an illegal move. But Carlsen did not claim it. He moved his king. Inarkiev now stopped the clock and called the arbiter to claim for a win. The Russian was awarded a full point and later the result was reversed with a win for Carlsen. What happened? What is this controversy all about and was the decision given by the arbiter correct. We asked IA Gopakumar Sudhakaran, who explains the intricacies.

Aravindh Chithambaram wins Sunway Sitges 2017, crosses 2600!

The IV Sunway Sitges International Chess Tournament officially ended on the 23rd of December 2017. But the memories will still linger on. Aravindh Chithambaram's victory was the highest point of the tournament, while side events made it special. For Aravindh the year has ended on a high. He very nearly won the National Premier, secured a bronze at the World Junior and now clinched the gold at this super strong open event. World Rapid 03: Anand clinches the title beating Fedoseev in the playoffs

What a finale it was to the World Rapid Championship! After 15 gruelling games, the tiger from Madras, Viswanathan Anand, won the rapid championship for the 12th time in his career in the Saudi Arabian capital of Riyadh. Scoring an undefeated 10.5/15, Vishy was tied for first with Ian Nepomniachtchi and Vladimir Fedoseev and had to win a playoff before he could lift the champion's trophy. In his trademark style, the lightning kid of the 80s showed his blitz prowess yet again scoring an emphatic victory over the Russian GM. A reports with pictures, games and analysis.

Vishy Anand is the World Rapid Champion 2017

Vishy Anand played the tournament of his life to score 10.5/15, remain unbeaten and become the World Rapid Champion 2017. After 15 rounds of rapid chess, we had three leaders - Anand, Fedoseev and Nepomniachtchi. The tiebreak was a blitz encounter between the first two placed players. Nepo had to be content with the third spot and Anand and Fedoseev fought it out in two blitz games to determine who would take home the gold. It was Anand who finally won the title with a 2-0 win over Fedoseev. While the world thought that Anand would soon retire, the Indian maestro is busy beating the best players in the business!

World Rapid 02: Anand beats Carlsen making big strides towards the title

On the second day of the World Rapid and Blitz Championship, the tiger from Madras, Vishy Anand roared loud. Winning two and drawing the rest of his games, Anand has retained his joint second spot in the tournament and is only half a point behind the tournament leader, Vladimir Fedoseev. The biggest highlight of the day for team India was Anand's win against his archrival, Magnus Carlsen. And guess what, he did that with the black pieces! In the women's group, Harika is currently in the joint third place, despite losing her first game of the event to Aleksandra Goryachkina. Day 2 report. 

Bhopal 2017 Round 9: It's a fight with yourself!

"It's a race against yourself," says Himanshu Sharma. The Haryana GM had a dismal national premier and finished in the last spot after losing eight games! In the Bhopal International he has worked hard in the months leading up to it and going into the last round he is one of the joint leaders. World Rapid and Blitz 01: Unbeatable Anand

Team India kicked off with a bang on day one of the World Rapid and Blitz Championship in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. After the first five rounds, Vishy Anand is the highest scorer from the Indian contingent. With an undefeated score of 4.0/5, Vishy is half a point behind tournament leaders Baadur Jobava and Vladimir Fedoseev. Besides Anand, Vidit, Adhiban and Hari also had a fantastic run on day 1. In the women's group, Padmini Rout and Harika Dronavalli are in a nine-way-tie for second with a score of 4.0/5. Bhopal 2017 Round 8: Vietnam's Korchnoi and Madhya Pradesh's Tal

It seemed like Timur Gareyev would run away with the Bhopal International 2017, but the Vietnamese GM Tran Tuan Minh had different ideas. He beat the top seed with the black pieces and snatched the lead. This gave a chance to Ivan Rozum as well to reach 7.0/8 and join Tran Tuan Minh. The duo play against each other today with as many as ten players breathing down their neck with 6.5/8. The tournament is moving towards an exciting finish. Absolutely not to be missed is the game by Madhya Pradesh's Mikhail Tal - Ankit Gajwa. He simply blew his opponent off the board with a series of spectacular sacrifices! 

World Rapid and Blitz 2017 begins in 4 hours, but no players' list

The World Rapid and Blitz Championship begins on the 26th of December at Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The first round will take place at 4.30 p.m. IST, in a little over four hours from now, but there is no sign of players' list. Many top players have given this event a miss. Seven Israelis were unable to make it due to visa issues. The prize money is excellent and so are the conditions for the players. But can you call this a World Championship? When players who have qualified rightfully are unable to participate, is this fair? We would like to know your opinion. Also we have some pictures from the opening ceremony sent to us by Anantharam Rathinam.
