7th National School Chess Championship 2018 starts

7th edition of National School Chess Championship 2018 started in the capital city of Odisha, Bhubaneswar. The tournament was inaugurated in presence of Mr.Achyuta Samanta, founder of Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology. The magnitude of this event is huge as this is the biggest school level national championship in Indian chess. From here, you can spread the awareness of chess all over the country. Tata Steel Chess 13: Vidit wins the Challengers; Magnus makes history winning his sixth Masters title!

The final round of Tata Steel Chess was a relatively calm one for the leaders in both categories. With the white pieces, Vidit Gujrathi avoided any mishap in a Queen's Gambit against Jorden van Foreest and agreed to a 24 move draw in the Challengers. This put the onus of winning on Korobov, who was in the run for the title. The Ukrainian GM failed and went down against Dmitry Gordievsky. In the Masters, leaders, Magnus Carlsen and Anish Giri both settled for solid draws against Sergey Karjakin and Wei Yi respectively, forcing a playoff which the reigning world champion won quite comfortably. An illustrated report on the final round. 

Tata Steel Chess 12: Anand's chances diminish while Vidit shines against Girya

The penultimate round of Tata Steel Chess saw some thrilling action. In the Masters, Anish Giri and Magnus Carlsen overtook the third co-leader beating Adhiban Baskaran and Maxim Matlakov, respectively. Mamedyarov, on the other hand, shocked everyone with a mere 12-move draw against Gawain Jones. Another serious contender, Viswanathan Anand also reduced his chances of winning the title prize to a minimum with his draw against Wesley So. But the best result for Indian fans came in the Challengers' group where Vidit Gujrathi scored a crushing win against Olga Girya and is now standing at the brink of winning the title prize having overtaken Anton Korobov on the leaderboard. Tata Steel 11: Anand beats Hou Yifan to get back into title contention!

Round 11 of the Tata Steel Masters saw all of the leaders draw their games. While Carlsen Giri and Mamedyarov settled splitting the point, the highlight of the round turned out to be Vishy Anand's instructive win against Hou Yifan. With this emphatic win, the Madras Tiger is back into contention for the title, just half a point behind the leaders. Just like in the Masters, leaders in the Challengers also settled for draws. Because of this, the deadlock between Vidit Gujrathi and Anton Korobov still remains. But with this draw, both leaders have slimmed down their lead as local lad Jorden van Foreest crept closer to their score beating Harika Dronavalli. Van Foreest is still a point behind but with just two rounds to go, anything can happen!  

Chennai 2018 Round 10: Laxman takes it all in a thriller

When the final round began Ivan Rozum had a one-point lead over the field. But he lost his game against Timur Gareyev. This opened up the tournament and five players tied on 8.0/10. They were Rozum, Gareyev, Laxman, Dzhumaev and Erigaisi. The tiebreak favoured the grandmaster from Chennai as Laxman won the championship and took home Rs. 2,00,000. Rozum had to be content with the second spot and Gareyev was third. Nikhil Dixit and Lakshmi. C made their IM and WIM norms respectively. Gibraltar 2018 R01-03: Indians have a ball!

The Gibraltar Masters is one of the strongest open tournaments in the world. Players from 50 countries with 92 grandmasters are participating in the event. 12 GMs above the rating of 2700 with some big names Aronian, MVL, Nakamura among others are seen in action. India has fielded 28 players with number two Harikrishna leading the campaign. Our young and talented players are getting the unique opportunity of facing world class opposition and they are not disappointing. Live Games of Tata Steel 2018

This is the 80th edition of the Wimbledon of Chess - Tata Steel Chess Festival and this is for the first time that India has four participants at the event - Anand and Adhiban in the open and Vidit and Harika in the Challengers. Anand will want to go for his sixth title victory, Adhiban will want to prove that last year was not a fluke, Vidit would want to win the Challengers and qualify to the masters and Harika would want to show that she is one of the best woman players in the world. Live games begin at 6 p.m. IST along with live commentary by Yasser Seirawan.

Chess gets space on the front page in The Hindu when Vishy Anand wins a World Championship. Recently, the newspaper carried the story of a 12-year-old that all the readers of ChessBase India know very well - Avathanshu Bhat. Anshu, as the boy is called by his friends, was working with the ChessBase India team at the IIFLW tournament in Mumbai. When Hindu special correspondent Nandakumar Marar visited the tournament he was pleasantly surprised to see such a young boy working so passionately as a journalist! Tata Steel Chess 10: Mamedyarov and Carlsen reunite with Giri as joint-leaders

The tenth round of Tata Steel Chess saw Carlsen and Mamedyarov reunite with Giri in the joint first place. While Mamedyarov demolished Peter Svidler in merely 21 moves, Carlsen won stylishly sacrificing a piece first and then a full rook in a 75 move long battle against Wesley So. Vishy Anand also registered a classy win against Gawain Jones and is currently fifth on the leaderboard. The other Chennaiite, Adhiban Baskaran, got a dominating position against Hou Yifan and tried to find a breakthrough until the 103rd move before conceding a draw. In the Challengers, both Harika and Vidit drew their games as did Vidit's co-leader, Anton Korobov. It seems the deadlock between Vidit and Korobov will only be resolved in their head to head encounter. Round 10 report.

Adham Fawzy wins Fritz 16 Sunway Sitges Online Blitz

ChessBase India held an Online Blitz tournament on 19th November 2017 to commemorate the launch of Fritz 16. The tournament was open to the entire world and the first prize was Fritz 16 and worth ₹2799 plus two extra nights for free after the tournament in any Sunway accommodation, hotel or apartments plus, 3 free lunches at the Sunway Sitges hotel for 2 persons. This type of first prize was offered in a ChessBase Online tournament for the very first time. IM Adham Fawzy of Egypt won the tournament and funny thing is, he was not even aware of the tournament until two hours before the tournament started. Chennai 2018 Round 9: Can Timur Gareyev stop Ivan Rozum?

Ivan Rozum is on fire at the 10th Chennai International 2018. He beat GM R.R. Laxman and moved to the sole lead and is ahead of the entire field by one full point! It seems as if the Russian will win this event. But things are not so simple. First of all, he has the black pieces against top seed Timur Gareyev and secondly his tiebreak is not so great. In the ninth round there were quite a few draws on top ten boards, but there were a few upsets with Marcos Llaneza getting the better of Adam Horvath and Sidhant Mohapatra beating GM Tran Tuan Minh. Report from Chennai.

Tata Steel Chess 09: Giri takes sole lead

Round nine of Tata Steel Chess was a rather peaceful affair with six out of the seven games drawn in the Masters' segment but the one game that ended decisively brought a new sole leader -- Anish Giri. Giri was caught off guard by Matlakov's pawn gambit in the Reti but managed to keep things under control and eventually register a nice victory while his co-leaders, Magnus Carlsen and Shakhriyar Mamedyarov were held to draws by Kramnik and Anand respectively. In the Challengers, both leaders Vidit Gujrathi and Anton Korobov drew their games. Korobov, who played against Harika Dronavalli in round 9 had to walk on tightropes before he could wriggle out with a draw. We have a report with pictures and analysis. 

Chennai 2018 Round 8: Deepan and Laxman play a crazy game of chess!

There are days in chess when the quality of the game takes precedence over the result. Eighth round at the Chennai International 2018 was one such day! Deepan Chakkravarthy playing with the white pieces complicated the position to such an extent that there was no coming back. Laxman held his nerve, took advantage of Deepan's inaccuracies and scored a win. He now leads the tournament with 7.0/8 along with Ivan Rozum. Ivan beat his Ukrainian opponent Adam Tukhaev. Round nine will see this interesting clash on the top board between Rozum and Laxman. In the round eight report we have a detailed analysis of the Deepan vs Laxman encounter. 

Prague Open 2018: Raahul VS scores his second IM norm

The Czech Tour 2018 consists of 11 tournaments that will be held over the entire year. One of the biggest events of this tour is the Prague Open which was held in Prague, the capital city of Czech Republic, from the 10th to the 19th of January 2018. The tournament was organized in exemplary fashion by Jan Mazuch and his team. GM Milan Pacher of Slovakia won the tournament with a score of 7.5/9. The biggest achiever for India at this event was 15-year-old Raahul VS who scored his second IM norm. He gained 60 Elo points and finished fifth. Diptayan wins Tata Steel All India Rapid Rating

GM Diptayan Ghosh wins Tata Steel All India Open Rapid Rating Chess Tournament 2017 which was full of 4 GMs and 8 IMs. The tournament witnessed various strong battles between two different generations in the official rapid event time control. The tournament was so close that until the last round, there was a five-way tie at 7 points each, it was difficult to predict who the champion would be until all games were finished. Diptayan defeated IM Suvrajit Saha in the last round and the top two boards drew their games, that made sure Diptayan solely finish at 8 points and be declared as the champion.
