Grand Swiss: Praggnanandhaa scores an exhilarating win against Gelfand

GM Boris Gelfand is FIDE World Cup 2009 winner and a former World Championship Challenger. It is not a surprise that the legend is still at the very top of his game. The World no.4, GM R Praggnanandhaa played beautiful chess to beat the maestro. GM Arjun Erigaisi defeated GM Anton Demchenko (SLO) after the latter misplayed in the endgame. GM Daniil Yuffa (ESP) imploded against the World Champion, GM D Gukesh. All three of them, Gukesh, Praggnanandhaa and Arjun are at 2.5/3 each. GM Parham Maghsoodloo (IRI) is the sole player in the Open to score a hat-trick. In the Women, the defending champion, GM R Vaishali won against IM Olga Badelka (AUT) to maintain her perfect score 3/3. Round 4 starts today at 3 p.m. local time, 3:30 p.m. IST. Kshatriya Nitin Vekhande convincingly clinches 49th Ciutat de Badalona Open 2025, Subhayan Kundu third

FM Kshatriya Nitin Vekhande scored an unbeaten 7.5/9 to win 49th Ciutat de Badalona Open Group A (≥1950) 2025. GM Dylan Isidro Berdayes Ason (CUB) scored sole 7/9 to secure second place. Four players - IM Subhayan Kundu, FM Kaivalya Sandip Nagare, FM Pablo Fernandez Borrego (ESP) and Bivor Adak scored 6.5/9 each. Kshatriya drew with the eventual runner-up, Dylan in the final round to become a clear champion. The top three prizes were €1000, €700 and €400 along with a trophy each respectively. The nine-day nine-round Rating Group A (≥1950) was  organized by Club d'Escacs Cor de Marina from 3rd to 11th August 2025 at Centre Cultural El Carme in Badalona (Barcelona), Spain. Arun Kataria prevails at 30th Augsburg Peace Festival Rating Open 2025

FM Arun Kataria scored an unbeaten 6/7 to win 30th Augsburg Peace Festival Rating Open 2025. He finished a half point ahead of the rest. FM Anton Bilchinski (GER), Markus Böhme (GER) and Thomas Lang (GER) scored 5.5/7 each. They secured second, third and fourth place respectively. The top three prizes were €650, €450 and €350 each. The four-day seven round Rating Open A tournament was organized by Frank Eckhardt at Bürgersaal Stadtbergen in Augsburg, Germany from 7th to 10th August 2025. Grand Swiss: Nihal channels his inner Tal

Nihal Sarin played arguably the most exciting game of the second round of FIDE Grand Swiss 2025. He channeled his inner Tal when he sacrificed an exchanged followed by his knight simply based on his instinct. It goes without saying that he was right. The World Champion, D Gukesh had some chances against Turkiye's youngest GM, Yagiz Kaan Erdogmus. However, the game ended in a draw. Abhimanyu Puranik drew against the defending champion, Vidit Gujrathi. R Praggnanandhaa won against Ivan Zemlyanskii as the latter made a simple tactical error. Arjun Erigaisi won a wild battle against Haik Martirosyan (ARM). Among the women, IM Vantika Agrawal missed good chances in the endgame against the two-time World Blitz Women champion, GM Bibisara Assaubayeva (KAZ). 14 teams ready to clash as Kerala Premier Chess League 2025 starts tomorrow

The Kerala Premier Chess League (KPCL) 2025 starts tomorrow in Thiruvananthapuram! A total of 14 teams are ready to battle it out in India's highest prize money chess league. With a prize fund of Rs. 25 lakh, the winning team will take home Rs. 10 lakh. Each team will consist of 20 players with 5 reserve players. The games will be played in a 15+5 time control with Swiss rounds on Day 1 and knockouts on Day 2. The lineup includes 3 Grandmasters and 6 International Masters. Prasannaa S dominates 1st Warrior Chess Academy Rapid Rating Open 2025

FM Prasannaa S scored an unbeaten 8.5/9 to win 1st Warrior Chess Academy Rapid Rating Open 2025. He finished a half point ahead of the rest. Half a dozen players - Ajjesh J R, Sailesh R, GM Laxman R R, Hari Ganesh T, P R Hrithickkesh and Vignesh N scored 8/9 each. They were placed second to seventh respectively according to tie-breaks. Prasannaa defeated both runners-up - Ajjesh and Sailesh in Round 7 and 9 respectively. The total prize fund was ₹300000. The top three prizes were ₹25000, ₹20000 and ₹15000 along with a trophy each. The one-day nine round Rapid  Rating Open tournament was organized by Warrior Chess Academy at Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium in Chennai, Tamil Nadu on 9th August 2025. Five players - GM Lucian-Costin Miron (ROU), GM Titas Stremavicius (LTU), IM Manish Anto Cristiano F, GM Pouya Idani (IRI) and GM Adam Kozak (HUN) scored an unbeaten 7/9 each at 18th Arad Grand Prix A (>2000) 2025. Lucian-Costin won the tournament on tie-breaks. The remaining four were placed second to fifth place respectively. The total prize fund was €38000. The top three prizes were €5000, €3000 and €2000 along with a trophy each. The seven-day nine round  Rating (>2000) tournament was organized by Romanian Chess Federation and Vados Chess Club Arad   at Hotel Continental Forum in Arad, Romania from 3rd to 9th August 2025. The World Champion, GM D Gukesh made a winning start against GM Etienne Bacrot (FRA) in the first round of FIDE Grand Swiss 2025. Gukesh seized his opportunity when the France no.3 erred. The defending champion, GM Vidit Gujrathi scored an emphatic win versus GM Alexander Donchenko (GER). GM Abhimanyu Puranik won a wild game against the FIDE Women's World Cup 2025 winner, GM Divya Deshmukh. The game could have gone either player's way. In the Women's event, IM Vantika Agrawal and GM R Vaishali won their respective games against IM Yuliia Osmak (UKR and IM Gulrukhbegim Tokhirjonova (UZB) respectively. Tapan Badamundi wins the 65th Odisha Senior State FIDE Open Chess Championship 2025

Chess in Odisha is growing steadily with time. Initiatives like Chess-O-Disha and Pro-Chess-Ta are producing players from every corner of the state. One such rising star from the state is Tapan Badamundi, a tribal boy who hails from the Paralakhemundi region. He discovered his passion for chess early on, but limited resources made it difficult for him to pursue it. But he didn't give up! Recognizing his potential, he was gifted a laptop through ChessBase India’s YouTube Members Program last year. All his hard work and dedication paid off when he recently won the 65th Odisha Senior State FIDE Rating Open Chess Championship. IM Kaustuv Kundu, IM Mayank Chakraborty and Alekhya Mukhopadhyay scored an unbeaten 8.5/10 each at 2nd Guwahati Smart City Rating Open 2025. Kaustuv won the tournament due to better tie-break score. Mayank and Alekhya were placed second and third respectively. Kaustuv drew against the top seed and eventual runner-up, Alekhya in the seventh round. The total prize fund was ₹510000. The top three prizes were ₹70000, ₹50000 and ₹30000 along with a trophy each. The five-day ten round Rating Open tournament was organized by All Assam Chess Association at Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium in Guwahati, Assam from 4th to 8th August 2025. Six players - GM Matthias Bluebaum (GER), GM Surya Sekhar Ganguly, IM Dau Khuong Duy (VIE), GM Dmitrij Kollars (GER), GM Yan Liu (CHN) and GM Jan Malek (POL) scored 7/9 each at 52nd Sparkassen Chess Trophy Open A (≥1951) 2025. Bluebaum won the tournament due to better tie-break scores. The remaining five were placed second to sixth respectively. Bluebaum drew against Ganguly in the final round to win the tournament. The total prize fund for 52nd Dortmund Chess Days was €20000, €16010 for Open A. The top three prizes were €4000, €2400 and €1600 along with a trophy each. Bristy Mukherjee and Diya Chowdhury clinch three medals at Asian Amateur 2025

India has won a total of three medals at Asian Amateur Chess Championships 2025. WFM Bristy Mukherjee won the sole Gold medal in Rapid Women event. She scored a perfect 9/9, won the tournament with a round to spare and finished 1.5 points ahead of the rest. She also won a Bronze medal in the Classical Under-2300 Women scoring 5.5/9. Diya Chowdhury earned a Bronze in Under-2000 Women Classical. She scored 6/9. The total prize fund of the tournament was HKD 215700. The top three prizes in Under-2000 and Under-2300 Women were HKD 8000, 6500 and 5000 along with a trophy and medal each. For Rapid Women, the top three prizes were HKD 2000, 1000 and 500 each.
