Lucena in Lockdown #6 : GM Raunak Sadhwani

"This is the best time for a chess player, and I am using it to my best!" says GM Raunak Sadhwani. Today we will be exploring a little on the 14-year-old prodigy. Always serious about his chess, Raunak spends 9-10 hours in a single day toiling away in online tournaments, solving positions and working on his openings. Exploring all the aspects of chess, he finds the online tournaments very convenient and plays lots of them very frequently.  His mother however, feels that Raunak needs to face a real tournament, because "Raunak is hardly getting the motivation without them." Diptayan Ghosh wins ₹34000 in six ChessBase India Online Blitz events

GM Diptayan Ghosh has set a new record by winning ₹34000 in six ChessBase India Online Blitz events within a month. He finished second in three consecutive events, then he won a tournament, finished second in the next and in the final event a sixth place finish was enough for him become the Circuit Champion in the inaugural season of Saturday Online Blitz Open. Thus becoming the only player to have such a fantastic record in Online events organized by us. If you are wondering how he did it, we caught up with him and picked his brain to divulge details of his phenomenal run. Checkmate Covid-19 Fundraiser Online Blitz by Chess Kerala on 2nd May 2020

Chess Kerala presents Checkmate Covid-19 International Online Blitz Tournament on 2nd May 2020. The entire event is being conducted to raise funds for the Kerala Government's fight against the Covid-19. The fund raised from the event will be donated to the Chief Minister's Distress Relief Fund and Official Income Tax exempted fund of the Kerala Government. The tournament has no entry fee, but to participate, you have to contribute a minimum of Rs.250. There is no upper limit and you can donate whatever amount you are comfortable with. The tournament has a total Prize fund of Rs. 52,000.

The FIDE chess. com online nations cup will begin from the 5th of May 2020. The participants of all six teams have been revealed. Although only four players will fight it out in each round, each team has six participants. India is by no means the favourite as they start as the fifth seeds out of six teams, but when you have players like Anand, Vidit, Hari, Adhiban, Humpy and Harika in your ranks, you know they can beat the best in the business. China has the strongest team thanks to not just Ding Liren, but also Hou Yifan making a comeback. USA has all their top guns in the fray. Russia as always is a tough nut to crack. Team Europe with MVL, Aronian and Giri looks formidable while Rest of the world with Radjabov, Firouzja and co. is not to be underestimated!

Vishy Anand becomes the Education Ambassador of WWF India

On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of WWF in India, the seven-time World Champion Vishy Anand announced last week on his twitter that he has become the Education Ambassador of World Wild Fund for Nature India. His aim as the ambassador is to bring the youth closer to the nature. On Earth Day, the legend mentioned about reconnecting with nature and protecting the environment for future generations. This is not only a great news for everyone concerned about the environment but also for the chess universe as Anand once again shows the way to become a champion off the board and make a positive contribution to the society. Biggest ever online blitz on ChessBase India: Sultan Khan Cup 2020 with a prize fund of Rs.101,000

The Sultan Khan Cup sponsored by IPS Academy and hosted on Playchess will be organized on 9th May 2020. IPS Academy is one of the largest educational hubs of Central India. With the support of Mr.Achal Choudhary, the founder of IPS Academy and Madhya Pradesh's first IM Akshat Khamparia, the Sultan Khan Cup will be organized by ChessBase India on Playchess. The total prize fund is Rs. 101,000. This is the biggest online event ever to be held by ChessBase India in terms of the prize fund and the number of prizes. The first prize will be ₹20,000. There are 20 main prizes and several rating category prizes as well. The tournament is held in the honour of India's legendary chess player - Mir Sultan Khan.

Praggnanandhaa wins 5th Saturday Online Blitz Open 2020

Chessworld1 - GM R Praggnanandhaa finished his Saturday Online Blitz Open just the way he started, by winning the tournament. He scored an unbeaten 8.5/9 to win 5th Saturday Online Blitz Open. He finished a full point ahead of the competition. Four players finished at 7.5/9, they are GM Gukesh D, GM Aravindh Chithambaram, GM Arjun Erigaisi and GM Raunak Sadhwani. They were placed second, third, fourth and fifth respectively according to their tie-break score. The third edition of the weekly tournament witnessed the participation of 190 players comprising of 16 GMs, 23 IMs, 3 WGMs and 6 WIMs from India, Argentina, Colombia, Denmark, England, France, Germany, Peru, Romania, Singapore, USA and Uzbekistan. GM Swapnil Dhopade launches four online courses

GM Swapnil Dhopade, the first GM from Vidarbha region in Maharashtra, has launched his online courses. There are four online courses - Tactical, Positional, Endgame and Opening. Each of them are closely curated by Swapnil and coaches personally trained by him will be guiding the students in a one to one coaching setup. Online Nations cup will see Vishy Anand back in action from 5th to the 10th of May

Now that it is clear that most of the over-the-board events this year will be cancelled, FIDE has announced a new online policy. The first of the events they have announced is the FIDE chess. com online nations cup that will be held from the 5th to the 10th of May 2020. Six teams will take part in it and they are Russia, USA, China, India, Europe and Rest of the World. Each team will have one female player. Vishy Anand will spearhead the Indian team. Garry Kasparov will be the captain of the European team. Vladimir Kramnik who had been mentioned as the captain of Indian team in the FIDE Press release, said that he won't be participating in the event.

Sunilduth Lyna Narayanan wins Buddhibal Kreeda Trust Online Blitz Open

The strongest ChessBase India Online Blitz event was won by GM Sunilduth Lyna Narayanan. He scored an unbeaten 8.5/9, finished a full point ahead of the competition to win the tournament. He won ₹10000 cash. Last month he won his first ChessBase India Online event March Masters Open. Both GM Diptayan Ghosh and GM Jose Eduardo Martinez Alcantara of Peru scored 7.5/9 each. They were placed second and third to earn ₹5000 and ₹3000 cash respectively. The tournament witnessed 171 players including 27 GMs, 36 IMs, 2 WGMs and 8 WIMs fighting for a total of ₹30000 prize fund. The entire prize fund was sponsored by Buddhibal Kreeda Trust and the entry fee collected was donated to the PM Cares and CM Relief fund.

Aravindh, Gukesh and Arjun are the top seeds in 5th Saturday Online Blitz Open 2020

The 5th edition of Saturday Online Blitz Tournament Open will take place this Saturday 18th April 2020. This is the final edition of this Circuit. Currently GM Diptayan Ghosh leads the Circuit standings with 28 points followed by GM Arjun Erigaisi and GM Raunak Sadhwani at 20 and 19 points each respectively. Arjun won the 4th edition and this is his second triumph in the Circuit as he already won the 2nd edition. Although Diptayan still has an eight-point lead, if both Diptayan and Arjun finish with the same score at the conclusion of 5th and final edition of the Circuit, Arjun will be declared the Circuit Champion as he had two first-place finishes. The amount of time we spend honing our chess skills is huge, but the amount of time we spend in fine-tuning our mindset and our psychology is very low. That's the reason why players are often afraid of fighting it out against lower rated players, or go into a depressed state of mind after a bad event, or just cannot perform well in the last round must-win situation.
