India's 66th GM who balanced his chess and education - Akash G.

2020 seemed like a year that India would get no GMs due to the Covid-19 situation. However, we have some good news to share with you: India has got its 66th GM and he is 23-year-old Akash Ganesan from Tamil Nadu! Akash's success story tells us that balancing chess and education is possible. After taking a semi-break from chess for nearly five years and becoming an engineer, he showed his class by becoming a GM with great focus and dedication! In this interview with ChessBase India Akash reveals his method of working, what helped him to become a GM, the role of his coaches and parents, his future plans and much more.

Carlsen's Numinous 9! | Legends of Chess Round 9

He just can't be stopped! Magnus Carlsen won his 9th match in row despite not playing his best chess, ending Kramnik's qualification hopes. Vassily Ivanchuk had to win outright against Anand to retain hopes of qualifying, but needed luck in the Armageddon to seal the tie, missing out by a point. A string of favorable results in other games meant that Peter Svidler qualified last, but not before suffering and losing to Anish Giri. Boris Gelfand got past Ian Nepomniachtchi in the Armageddon after coming back from a loss as White in the 1st game by playing brilliantly in the 2nd. Ding Liren ended the most horrible tournament of his life on a high by beating Leko, who started well but struggled to win good positions, and finally ended up last. Wojtaszek wins 53rd Biel GMT, Harikrishna finishes second

Harikrishna gave his all and won the final round against Anton Guijarro. However Wojtaszek also won his game against Studer. Thus Wojtaszek won the 53rd Biel Chess Festival GMT with 37 points, Harikrishna finished at second position with 36.5 points and Adams secured the third position with 35.5 points. Harikrishna was the best in Classical event as he scored an unbeaten 5.5/7 and he also beat the eventual champion Wojtaszek in Round 5. That's not all, Harikrishna's 2878 performance allowed him to gain 13 rating points and he is now World no.20 according to the live ratings list. He has also regained India no.2 spot. He shuns public attention and has very few interviews and information published about him online. Harikrishna has a very good chance to win 53rd Biel Chess Festival GMT. However for him to win the tournament, the first thing he needs is to beat Anton Guijarro in the final round. Then Wojtaszek either needs to make a draw or lose against Noel Studer. In case Harikrishna draws then Wojtaszek must lose and Adams also needs to lose or make a draw with Naiditsch. Giri makes the Final Four | Legends of Chess Round 8

With one round to go in the preliminaries, the Legends of Chess has had 3 out of the final 4 decided. Anish Giri joins Magnus Carlsen, who beat fellow qualifier Ian Nepomniachtchi, despite losing in the Armageddon to Ivanchuk, as his consistent performances in the last few matches sees him make the cut with a round to spare. Peter Svidler bests Vladimir Kramnik to leave himself as the favourite to qualify last with a round to go. Koneru Humpy is the current World no.2 among Women. She won the FIDE World Rapid Championship last year in December. Earlier this year she won the second edition of Cairns Cup. Finally! After a disappointing start to the event where he lost his first 6 matches, Vishy Anand roared back into form! He cruised past his 2012 challenger Boris Gelfand 2.5-0.5 to get his first match win of the event! Magnus Carlsen and Ian Nepomniachtchi are now through to the semifinal stage after contrasting match wins over Svidler and Leko. The race for the other two spots becomes tighter and tighter, as Vladimir Kramnik suffered a surprising 3-1 loss against Vassily Ivanchuk to hand the Ukrainian Wizard a golden opportunity to fight for qualification. Anish Giri is simply playing like a different player now, as the Dutchman condemned Ding to a 2.5-0.5 loss in what has clearly been the worst tournament in the Chinese No.1's recent career. Biel GMT Round 5: Harikrishna scores a brilliant win against Wojtaszek

Harikrishna scored a much needed victory with the black pieces against Wojtaszek in Round 5 of 53rd Biel Chess Festival GMT. This win made sure that Harikrishna remains in the title fray and he is now just three points behind the leader Wojtaszek. Adams suffered a loss against Anton Guijarro. The Spanish GM found his form back in the Blitz event. Keymer scored a comfortable victory against Studer. He will face Wojtaszek in the penultimate round today which will definitely play a huge role in deciding who stays in the title hunt. Edouard missed a couple of good chances against Naiditsch. Carlsen subdues Ding | Legends of Chess Round 6

With 3 rounds to go, it seems that the fight for first place is more or less a two horse race now. Magnus Carlsen started the day 4 hours ahead of the rest, as the champions' Fantasy Football commitments took priority later in the day, and managed to overpower Ding Liren to take over sole first. Nepomniachtchi needed an Armageddon and some luck to overcome Vishy Anand, who now seems out of qualifying contention. Peter Leko and Anish Giri played a fighting match with 3 decisive results, but the Dutchman scored 2 of those wins and stays in the hunt for a top 4 finish. Vladimir Kramnik should have lost the match against Gelfand in 3 games, but a combination of skill and will meant he equalised and took the Armageddon, taking sole third place in the process. Peter Svidler scraped past Ivanchuk to keep in touch with the top places, as the tournament heads for an exciting finish. Hard luck for Harikrishna in Biel GMT Blitz

Harikrishna had a hard time in the Blitz as he scored only 6.0/14 and finished fifth. It resulted him in dropping to third place in the overall standings of 53rd Biel Chess Festival GMT and the gap between him and the tournament leader Wojtaszek increased to seven points. Circumstantially, Harikrishna will face Wojtaszek in Round 5 after rest day. Wojtaszek remained undefeated in the Blitz and scored 11.0/14 along with Adams. The latter lost to Wojtaszek by 1.5-0.5. Nepo stops Kramnik, catches Carlsen | Legends of Chess Round 5

At the halfway mark, we finally begin to have some clarity in the standings! Ian Nepomniachtchi cruised past Peter Svidler 3-1, catching Magnus Carlsen, who needed an Armageddon to seal a comeback win over Vassily Ivanchuk. Vladimir Kramnik continues his hot streak, this time beating the out-of-sorts Ding Liren to claim sole third place with 10 points, 4 behind the leaders. Anish Giri continued to slowly climb up the rankings, this time beating Boris Gelfand, who has suddenly lost 3 matches in a row after a brilliant start. Peter Leko played the better chess in the entire match against Vishy Anand, but had to win the Armageddon game to go through after losing a winning position in Game 1.
