Team India is the favorite at the Asian Online Nations Cup 2020

Fresh off the heels of winning Gold in FIDE Online Olympiad a little over a month ago, Team India will begin their campaign at Asian Online Nations Cup 2020 tomorrow, Saturday 10th October as the top seed in both Men's and Women's division. Nihal Sarin, Bhakti Kulkarni and Vaishali R are the only three players from the Gold medal winning team of Online Olympiad, will be taking part in this event. Surya Sekhar Ganguly will lead the men's team comprising of Adhiban, Nihal, Sethuraman and Sasikiran. The women's team of Vaishali, Bhakti, Padmini and Nandhidhaa will be led by Mary Ann Gomes. Preliminary stage will consist of 9 rounds in total with three rounds per day in the preliminary stage starting from tomorrow, Saturday at 11:30 a.m. IST. Photo: Various sources

Altibox Norway Chess R4: Carlsen takes sole lead

World Champion Carlsen has taken the lead with 9.0/12 for the first time in Altibox Norway Chess 2020 when he beat World no.2 Caruana in Round 4. Caruana went into Carlsen's favorite territory of endgame by exchanging queens early in the game and then he was unable to defend properly which allowed the Norwegian to take the lead. Firouzja beat Aronian in the Armageddon after making a draw in their Classical encounter. This was the second consecutive Armageddon victory for the youngster. Aronian had his chances but he missed them. Meanwhile Tari beat Duda after his ambitious play almost cost him the Armageddon. Today is a rest day. Carlsen scored his first Classical victory of the tournament against his compatriot Aryan Tari. Although Carlsen presented a few opportunities to the young Norwegian but he was unable to seize it. Duda is still having a tough time as he lost once again, this time against Aronian. Despite the majority of the game being equal and heading towards a draw, the Pole no.1 erred in the endgame which cost him the point. Meanwhile, Firouzja beat Caruana in the Armageddon after making a draw in their Classical encounter. Caruana had a decent chance in the Classical game, however Firouzja was determined the must-win Armageddon and he definitely showed that he can hang with the best of the best so far. Altibox Norway Chess R2: Carlsen survives a massive scare

Altibox Norway Chess already started heating up as Carlsen steers clear from the jaws of defeat. Although he had a good chance to win the Classical game, it ended up in a draw which turned things in Firouzja's favor as he just needed a draw in the Armageddon to win the round. Firouzja got a winning position but he was unable to seize the brilliant opportunity and Carlsen swerved with a victory. Caruana scored second consecutive victory to take the sole lead with 6.0/6 and birthday boy Aronian won against Tari without breaking a sweat to jump to the shared second spot 4.0/6 with Firouzja. Carlsen started his Altibox Norway Chess campaign with a victory over Aronian in the Armageddon after making a draw in their first Classical encounter since December 2019. Thus Carlsen has 1.5 points after the conclusion of Round 1. Aronian being in a must-win situation in the Armageddon, pushed too hard in a seemingly equal position and blundered his rook. Both Caruana and Firouzja scored fine wins against Tari and Duda respectively, allowing themselves to share the lead with 3.0 points each at the end of the opening round. Carlsen returns to OTB at Altibox Norway Chess 2020

In the online era, we play several matches in such a short period of time compared to what we would have played when over-the-board events were on. It is true that blitz games are not worth analyzing as experts say but often we come across position which is definitely worth a second look and sometimes a deep analysis too. Few days ago we shared a position by trainer Niladri Bhattacharyya on our facebook page. This position occurred in his online blitz game over a year ago where his opponent blundered and lost the game soon. However, there was a defence. Moksh Amit Doshi - The latest IM from Gujarat

Moksh Amit Doshi became the latest International Master from Gujarat. He scored six IM-norms in just over 16 months, but he became an IM only when he crossed the 2400 rating barrier on 29th October 2019 at the second round of Romanian International Open. He scored his maiden IM-norm at a Round-Robin event in Balaton, Hungary in June 2018. He scored his second IM-norm at Rilton Cup 2018-19. The final norm was scored at Asian Youth Under-16 Open when he won Gold. Get to know about this young talent's journey from the boy Moksh himself.
