FTX Crypto Cup QF Day 2: Carlsen eliminates Nakamura in an exciting thriller

During the online era of chess, Carlsen and Nakamura played some slobberknocker games. Meltwater Champions Chess Tour FTX Crypto Cup also got to witness a few. Nakamura crumbled under pressure in the blitz tie-breaks and lost to Carlsen. He will face Radjabov in the Semi-Finals who drew all four games with his good friend Giri. Nepomniachtchi and Caruana also had some very interesting games but unfortunately for the American he missed few opportunities and could not continue his momentum from the Prelims. Gibraltar GP R6: Abdumalik and Mariya still in the lead 4.5/6

FIDE Gibraltar Women's GP headed to the only rest day of the event as both Abdumalik and Mariya Muzychuk maintained their lead with 4.5/6 each respectively. A battle between the leaders did not yield a decisive result as both of them are at the top of their game and neither made any significant mistake. Lagno drew with Saduakassova to move to sole third place with 4.0/6. She is followed by Dzagnidze, Paehtz and Mammadzada who are at 3.0/6 each respectively. AICF World Cup Qualifier R1-7: Four-way lead at 5.0/7

Seven rounds of AICF World Cup Qualifier have been played and there are four players at 5.0/7. They are Surya Sekhar Ganguly, Narayanan S L, Gukesh D and Sethuraman SP. Ten more rounds to go and time control is of Rapid, 15 mins + 10 seconds which means the tournament is open for anyone to win. GM Iniyan P and IM Raja Rithvik R are at 4.5/7 each, followed by GM Deep Sengupta at 4.0/7. Among the top players, Adhiban is struggling a bit as he has scored only 3.5/7. When Carlsen and Nakamura are paired in a knockout stage, you can expect some exciting games, be it the Finals or Quarter-Finals. The match of the day of the first set of Quarter-Finals in Meltwater Champions Chess Tour FTX Crypto Cup certainly goes to Carlsen-Nakamura. The only match which had all decisive results and no dull 100+ move draws. Carlsen himself admitted getting crushed by Nakamura in the third game and not enjoying the fact of getting into must-win situations often in this event. Gibraltar GP R5: Abdumalik shocks Stefanova

The fifth round of FIDE Gibraltar Women's GP also had 50% decisive results. Both Abdumalik and Mariya Muzychuk scored convincing victories against Stefanova and Bulmaga respectively to maintain their lead with 4.0/5. Paehtz was the only other victor in the round as she managed to turn things in her favor from a tumultuous position against Kashlinskaya. Lagno had a good opportunity which she did not capitalize and eventually made a draw with Anna Muzychuk. Fabiano Caruana completely dominated the Meltwater Champions Chess Tour FTX Crypto Cup Day 2 and 3 as he topped the Prelims stage with 10.0/15. Four players finished with 9.0/15, they are - Giri, Nakamura, Vachier-Lagrave and So. Carlsen and Nepomniachtchi won their last round game to advance to the Quarter-Finals. New in Chess Classic finalists Carlsen and Nakamura will battle each other in the Quarter-Finals. Among other match ups, Caruana will go against Nepomniachtchi, So vs. Vachier-Lagrave and Radjabov vs. Giri. Gibraltar GP R4: Abdumalik, Mariya and Lagno share three-way lead 3.0/4

The fourth round of FIDE Gibraltar Women's GP had 50% decisive results which means the other 50% were draws. The tournament witnessed its shortest draw in just 12 moves. Both Abdumalik and Lagno made comfortable draws against Bulmaga and Stefanova to maintain their lead with 3.0/4. Meanwhile Mariya Muzychuk beat Mammadzada to join the leaders as she moved to 3.0/4. 17 Indians will fight it out for the one World Cup spot at the AICF Qualifier

The World Cup 2021 which will be held in June 2021 in Sochi, Russia is an event that everyone is looking forward. For top Indian players the way to reach a World Cup is generally through the Asian Continental tournament. However, this year, no Indian could participate in it as it was in a hybrid format and the Covid situation made it impossible for our stars to play. Hence, the AICF World Cup Qualifiers are taking place from the 26th to 30th May where 17 Indians who were slated to play at the Asian Continental will fight it out against each other. The winner qualifies to the World Cup 2021.

Gibraltar GP R3: Bulmaga stuns Stefanova

There were four decisive results and two well-fought draws in Round 3 of FIDE Gibraltar Women's GP. Abdumalik managed to save herself from looming danger against Mammadzada and maintain her lead with 2.5/3. Kateryna Lagno beat Valentina Gunina to join the lead with 2.5/3. Three players are at 2.0/3 and they are - Mariya Muzychuk, Nana Dzagnidze and Gunay Mammadzada. Meltwater Champions Chess Tour FTX Crypto Cup Day 1 saw Anish Giri emerge as the sole leader with 4.0/5. He scored victories over Pichot, Ding Liren and Grischuk. Three players are at 3.5/5 and they are - Nakamura, Vachier-Lagrave and So. Vachier-Lagrave got his revenge against Grischuk from the Candidates 2020 and he also handed Carlsen his sole defeat of the event so far. It is safe to say that the Frenchman is off to a good start. Five games had decisive results in Round 2 of FIDE Gibraltar Women's GP. Abdumalik scored her second consecutive victory and became the sole leader with 2.0/2. Four other women also scored a victory each - Mariya Muzychuk, Lagno, Stefanova and Mammadzada. The only draw of the round was between Anna Muzychuk and Nana Dzagnidze. Carlsen will face Nepomniachtchi in World's first Bitcoin chess tournament - FTX Crypto Cup

The last Major event of Meltwater Champions Chess Tour is FTX Crypto Cup which will start on Sunday 23rd May 2021. Nepomniachtchi will go against Carlsen for the first time since he became a Challenger for the World Championship which is slated to take place later this year. The entirety of the world top 10 will be seen in action along with six more players competing for a total of US$320,000 prize fund, out of which $100,000 will be paid in crypto currency. FIDE Gibraltar GP finally started on Saturday 22nd May 2021 after a few rescheduling of the event due to the ever changing situation of the world owing to Covid-19 pandemic. For most of the participants, this is their first over-the-board tournament in over a year and fortuitously some of their last event was also a FIDE Women's Grand Prix event at Lausanne, Switzerland. Paehtz, Abdumalik and Gunina are the three victors in Round 1 and out of them Paehtz and Gunina made the most out of their opportunities given by their respective opponents Bulmaga and Kashlinskaya. Rucha Pujari becomes the first Indian woman titled player to become Twitch Partner

When everyone takes the safer route of a well-trodden path, it is not an easy task to walk on a different one and make your own mark. There are hundreds of players who took to youtube to start streaming chess since last year's lockdown owing to Covid-19 pandemic, very few Indians started the same on twitch. WIM Rucha Pujari from Kolhapur, Maharashtra took up a daunting task to start streaming in the later part of last year. She learnt everything on her own, tapped on her creative side and explored a new horizon. Last month she won a Hand and Brain tournament with FM Kozok, finishing ahead of Nakamura's team. In this article, we get to know Rucha's streaming journey so far.
