Croatia Rapid and Blitz Day 1: Nepomniachtchi takes sole lead 5.0/6

The first day of the Croatia Rapid and Blitz witnessed seven decisive games out of 15. White won in all of them. Nepomniachtchi started the day with two victories and a draw with Anand to take the sole lead 5.0/6. He is looking stronger by the day on the board as his World Championship approaches. Seven players share the second place after the third round in Rapid with a 50% score, 3.0/6. Serbia Open R8: Nihal gains sole lead 7.0/8 and breaks into World Top 100

Nihal Sarin soared into World Top #100 as he crossed 2650 in the live ratings list to become World #90. What a way to achieve that as he gained sole lead 7.0/8 by scoring a hat-trick of victories and he is still undefeated. He will face the top seed of the tournament, Vladimir Fedoseev in the final round. Apart from Fedoseev, Bernadskiy and IM Aditya Mittal are also tied at second place 6.5/8. Aditya is playing phenomenal chess as he racked up five consecutive victories including the last three against GMs. He would definitely like to score his maiden GM-norm and make a podium finish. A hearty chess gesture from the Czech Republic to the Indian state of Kerala

The state of Kerala, India found a pleasant gesture from a land faraway, the Czech Republic, when 'Chess Train' organiser Pavel Matocha organised a charity chess simultaneous display at Prague to help in its vaccination drive, the raised money going to the Chief Minister's Distress Relief Fund of the Kerala Government. The motive behind this hearty gesture was no more than the attachment felt with the state of Kerala and its people, when Matocha participated in the 'Chess Houseboat' event held during early 2020. Serbia Open R6-7: Nihal and Kovalenko emerge as the leaders 6.0/7

Nihal Sarin is aiming to score his second consecutive tournament victory and gain maximum momentum before starting his World Cup campaign. GM Igor Kovalenko (LAT) and Nihal are the only two players in the lead 6.0/7 at the conclusion of Round 7 at Serbia Open 2021. They will inevitably face each other in the penultimate round of the event. Kovalenko defeated Arjun in the seventh round. Anand and Kasparov will return to action at Croatia Rapid and Blitz GCT

This year's Grand Chess Tour has a tight schedule. The third event of this season and the second rapid and blitz tournament will take place at Kongresni Centar NSK, Zagreb, Croatia from 7th to 11th July 2021. Anand will make his return to competitive chess for the first time since winning the Gold at the FIDE Online Olympiad 2020. He will be joined by his longtime rival over the board and friend, Kasparov. They will be competing with World Championship Challenger - Nepomniachtchi, Vachier-Lagrave, Grischuk, Superbet Chess Classic 2021 winner Mamedyarov, Giri, Jorden van Foreest, Saric, Korobov and Duda. Praggnanandhaa and his visa issues

If someone were to put down a list of youngsters in the chess world who would go on to become world class players in the next decade or so, a prominent name that would feature in the list is R. Praggnanandhaa. Praggnanadhaa crossed the Elo barrier of 2600 at the tender age of 14 years 3 months and 24 days, second youngest in the world after Wei Yi. The last 15 months have been hard for the lad, as he couldn't travel for over the board events due to the pandemic. Now that things are opening up, he has a chance to take part in three excellent events in Europe and has been invited for the same by the organizers. However, the technicality of getting a Schengen visa is creating a big problem. We tell you what the exact issue is.

Serbia Open R5: Five players share the lead 4.5/5

Five players - Petrosyan, Shevchenko, Stamatis, Sanal and Indjic share the lead 4.5/5 at the conclusion of Round 5 at Serbia Open 2021. There were no decisive games among the top five boards. Among the Indians, Nihal, Pranav, Arjun and Raunak - all four of them drew their respective games. Pranav continues his impressive run as he drew with GM Vugar Asadli. The man who just won't back down: Karthik KVK

Kuchibhotla Venkata Krishna Karthik aka Karthik KVK - who recently won the Super Heroes Cup online event- has been a shining star in the chess world since the time he picked up chess in the year 2001. His story is one of struggle, one of determination, and one of success. Throughout, tragic events befell him and his family, and Karthik has braved it all, focusing all his energy solely on the game of chess. His achievements have been numerous, and time spent on preparation long. Serbia Open R4: Pranav stuns Perunovic

The number of leaders thinned to one-third from the previous round at the conclusion of Round 4 at Serbia Open 2021. Shevchenko, Petrosyan and Serbia's very own Indjic are among the leaders who are still unscathed. Nihal, Arjun, Raunak and Pranav - all four of them won their respective games to move to 3.5/4. Pranav continues his fantastic momentum as he beat GM Milos Perunovic in this round. He is well on his way to score his final IM-norm and perhaps a GM-norm too in the process. Levon Aronian wins Goldmoney Asian Rapid

The two-time World Cup winner Levon Aronian has hit the form at the right time. Just days before the FIDE World Cup, the Armenian won his first event at the Meltwater Champions Chess Tour. Goldmoney Asian Rapid is also Aronian's first tournament victory of this year. He was completely dominant in the second set as he won both games and the second one was arguably Aronian's best victory of the tournament. The other leaders are - Asadli, Kovalenko, Petrosyan, Shevchenko, Indjic, Basso, Serbian GM Bogosavljevic and the only IM among them Ozenir from Turkey. Among the Indians, Nihal, Arjun, Raunak and Pranav are at 2.5/3 each respectively. Pranav has so far delivered an impressive performance. Levon Aronian has all the momentum to win his first event at the Meltwater Champions Chess Tour. Previously he was in the Finals of Airthings Masters but he was unsuccessful to win it. The Armenian won the first set 2.5-1.5 against Artemiev. The debutant Russian must win the second set to force blitz tie-breaks. Carlsen won the first set against Ding Liren for the 3rd-4th place match. Ding Liren will also have to win the second set to force tie-breaks. Abhimanyu Mishra becomes the youngest GM in the history of chess

Hailing from New Jersey, USA, Abhimanyu Mishra, a 12-year-old boy from Indian origin has taken the world of chess by storm, by achieving his final norm on the 30th of June 2021 at the Vezerkepzo GM Mix at Budapest, Hungary. With his victory of GM Leon Mendonca, Abhimanyu completed all the formalities to become a grandmaster! He has become the youngest GM in the history of the game at the age of 12 years 4 months and 25 days, edging out Karjakin's previously held record by 66 days! Abhimanyu is a tremendous talent and in this article we tell you all about his skills, both on and off the board that have helped him become a grandmaster at such a young age.  

Goldmoney Asian Rapid SF Day 2: Aronian knocks out Carlsen

Both Carlsen and Ding Liren were the favorites to advance to the Finals of Meltwater Champions Chess Tour Goldmoney Asian Rapid. However, Aronian and Artemiev won their respective second sets to force blitz tie-breaks and they won them too. Carlsen again started the day with a loss which happened for the sixth time out of the seven days of the event. He also lost a total of four times out of six games. Aronian will now face tour debutant Artemiev in the Finals while Carlsen will play against Ding Liren for the 3rd-4th place match.
