The first set of Semifinals at the Meltwater Champions Chess Tour Chessable Masters witnessed Liem and So prevailing against their respective opponents. Aronian lost the first set against Liem by 1-3. Although he missed a few things and certainly was not in his best shape as he had shown in the earlier phase of the tournament. Meanwhile, So beat Artemiev by minimum margin 2.5-1.5. Both Aronian and Artemiev must win the second set of the Semifinals to force tie-breaks and keep their chances in the tournament. On 20th July 2021, on the occasion of 97th International Chess day, ChessBase India announced a contest where the task was to answer this one simple question "What is that chess has given you in your life?". We received over 1800+ heartfelt, genuine and insightful answers. We had a great experience in reading about how chess made an impact on everyone's life. We have included some of the best answers in this article and indicated the winner. It was difficult to choose just one winner from so many different entries! But we have put some of the answers that we liked and we hope that it inspires people to begin or continue their chess journey. The winner's entry is at the end of the article.

Carlsen composes a symphony of positional sacrifice

The first game of the FIDE World Cup 2021 Final between Karjakin and Duda was a damp squib - as perfectly described by the British legend Nigel Short during the live commentary. Karjakin's good preparation did not work out as his novelty was surprised by Duda's response and thus a draw was made by repetition. The only other game of the day between Fedoseev and Carlsen will be one for the ages because of Carlsen's brilliant positional sacrifice. Generally the world champion unleashes his 'Hulk mode' after suffering a loss, however this time, 'The Mozart of Chess' composed a beautiful symphony whose melody reverberated throughout the chess universe, and perhaps it will continue to be for eons. Chessable Masters QF Day 2: Liem storms into Semifinals

Jorden van Foreest was unable to continue his momentum from the previous day in the second set of Meltwater Champions Chess Tour Chessable Masters Quarterfinals. So avenged his loss by beating Jorden in consecutive games before making a draw to eliminate him from the tournament. Former World Blitz champion Liem beat Firouzja in both games to advance to the Semifinals for the very first time. Aronian beat Mamedyarov by 2-1 to set up a clash with Liem in the Semis. Artemiev-Nakamura had the most evenly matched duel of the day as their match went to Armageddon, which was won by Artemiev. He will face So in the Semifinals today, which starts at 8:30 p.m. IST. Gata Kamsky wins 54th Biel GMT 2021, Nihal finishes third

FIDE World Cup 2007 winner Gata Kamsky beat Vincent Keymer in the final round to win 54th Biel International Chess Festival Grandmaster Triathlon with a score of 35 points. Kirill Alekseenko made 31 points to secure second position. Nihal Sarin who drew all his Classical games except the first one, was placed third with 28.5 points. Vaishali scored her final IM-norm to become India's latest International Master, and she also won the Best Woman prize. Four out of top seven places were claimed by Indian players. Jan-Krzysztof Duda shatters Carlsen's World Cup dreams

Very few people would have predicted that Duda will beat Carlsen to secure his place in the Finals of FIDE World Cup 2021. There is no better way to qualify for the FIDE Candidates than to beat the world champion in the Semifinals of the World Cup while remaining undefeated. The only other player who remained undefeated was Kosteniuk and she won the first ever FIDE Women's World Cup 2021. Duda definitely has the momentum and the world of confidence with him, but Karjakin is known to show huge tenacity, as evident in this event against Shankland in the Quarterfinals and in 2015 when he bounced back from 0-2 and went on to win the tournament. Chessable Masters QF Day 1: Jorden ends So's unbeaten streak

Tata Steel Chess 2021 winner Jorden van Foreest ended So's 16-game unbeaten streak in the Meltwater Champions Chess Tour Chessable Masters. After an interesting draw in the first game, Jorden beat So in the next game in just 19 moves where the Fischer Random World Champion got in trouble early in the middlegame by opting for a rare sideline. He struck back in the next game to level the score. Can Karthikeyan Murali win Biel MTO 2021?

Karthikeyan Murali 6.5/8 is on the verge of winning the 54th Biel International Chess Festival MTO 2021. He just needs a draw in the final round as he has a better tie-breaks than his pursuers. A win would guarantee his championship. Although Gukesh could spoil his chances since he will face Karthikeyan in the final round. Gukesh, Salem and Eljanov are the only three players at 6.0/8. Nihal drew his game against Kamsky in the penultimate round. Thus his chances of winning the event got dashed. Alekseenko outplayed Gelfand to bring himself in the championship picture. Breaking News: India gets its 69th GM - Harshit Raja

On 3rd of August 2021, Harshit Raja, the 20-year-old youngster from Pune Maharashtra, drew his game against Dennis Wagner at the Biel Masters Open 2021 and achieved his final GM norm with one round to spare. With this sparkling performance Harshit also managed to cross the rating barrier of 2500 and became India's 69th grandmaster! Harshit is a perfect example of how one can balance chess + academics, as he pursuing his dual degree in finance and economics from the University of Mizzou, USA. Chessable Masters Day 3: So tops the Prelims

The top two positions at the points table remained unchanged at the conclusion of the third day of prelims at Meltwater Champions Chess Tour Chessable Masters. So won the prelims with an unbeaten 11.0/15 followed by Aronian at 10.5/15. Firouzja and Nakamura also scored 10.5/15 each. Artemiev, Liem, Mamedyarov and Jorden van Foreest are the other Quarterfinalists. Abhimanyu Mishra scored his sole victory of the event against Harikrishna. Alexandra Kosteniuk wins the FIDE Women's World Cup 2021

Karjakin becomes the first finalist at the FIDE World Cup 2021 as he beat Fedoseev to secure his place in the Finals and the next FIDE Candidates tournament. Carlsen-Duda fight is just not over yet. If history is any indication, then we might just see another slobber knocker match like Carlsen-Esipenko. Duda is the only player who is still undefeated in the FIDE World Cup so far. Alexandra Kosteniuk won the first FIDE Women's World Cup. She remained undefeated throughout the event and did not require to play a single tie-break game. Karthikeyan Murali remains in the sole lead as he drew with Pavel Eljanov in the seventh round of 54th Biel International Chess Festival MTO 2021. Eljanov maintains his chase 5.5/7. They are followed by eight players at 5.0/7. IM Harshit Raja continues his quest for the GM title as he drew with GM Alexander Donchenko. Raunak Sadhwani showed great tenacity against Sethuraman to salvage a draw. Nihal drew with Keymer and Kamsky won his game against Pichot. The gap increased to four points now. Aronian made the biggest climb on the second day of Meltwater Champions Chess Tour Chessable Masters. The Armenian scored a massive 4.5/5, jumping from tenth to second place. Former world blitz champion, Le Quang Liem is the second-highest gainer as he scored an unbeaten 4.0/5 to move to second position. Artemiev scored only 2.0/5. The battle of Carlsen-Duda and Fedoseev-Karjakin in the Semifinals of FIDE World Cup 2021 ended in draws. It was not a quick or quiet draw. All four players cautiously tested their opponent, but they all were very careful to make a mistake and cause a decisive result. After making a recovery from a completely lost position, Kosteniuk won the first game in the Finals of FIDE Women's Open Cup against Goryachkina. The former women's world champion is just a draw away from winning the first FIDE Women's World Cup. Twelfth seed Karthikeyan Murali maintained his sole lead by scoring a victory over Sethuraman in the sixth round of 54th Biel International Chess Festival MTO 2021. Eljanov is the only player who is a half point behind him 5.0/6. They will face each other in a crucial game in the seventh round. IM Harshit Raja scored a fine victory over GM Abhimanyu Puranik. GM Raunak Sadhwani held GM Maksim Chigaev to a marathon draw. Yesterday was a rest day for the GMT. The fifth round of GMT and seventh round of MTO will start at 5:30 p.m. IST today.
