FIDE chess.com Grand Swiss 2021 starts today

15 Indian players will be seen in action at FIDE chess.com Grand Swiss and Women's Grand Swiss 2021, starting at Riga, Latvia today. Harikrishna, Adhiban and Harika are the players who qualified by average rating criteria between July 2020 and June 2021. Sasikiran, Sethuraman and Vaishali made it from the reserve players list. The remaining nine players are Wild Card entrants - Nihal, Gukesh, Arjun Erigaisi, Praggnanandhaa, Raunak, Padmini, Vantika and Divya. 107 GMs and an IM from 36 countries with an average rating 2639 are taking part in the Open. The Women's event witnesses 15 GMs, 20 IMs and 9 WGMs from 23 countries across the world with an average rating of 2405 should give you an idea about the strength and importance of the event. Sheikh Russel GM R8: Rasulov ends Srinath's unbeaten run

GM Vugar Rasulov (AZE) handed GM Srinath Narayanan his first loss of the event in the penultimate round of Sheikh Russel International GM 2021. Thus, Rasulov has emerged as the sole leader 6.5/8, heading into the final round. He must win the last round to ensure his triumph as a draw could mean his fate will be decided by other players' results. Six players are at a half point behind him. They are GMs Vitaliy Bernadskiy (UKR), Srinath Narayanan, Masoud Mosadeghpour (IRI), Shyam Sundar M, Michal Krasenkow and IM Mitrabha Guha. The Tata Steel Masters will move into its 84th edition in 2022. Although the World Championship will end in mid-December 2021, the World Champion Magnus Carlsen has confirmed his presence. The tournament that is held in the Dutch town of Wijk Aan Zee will see many other stalwarts taking part - world no.2 Fabiano Caruana, Dutch no.1 Anish Giri, World Cup winner Duda, creative genius Shakhriyar Mamedyarov, Minister of Defence Sergey Karjakin, Daniil Dubov, Andrey Esipenko among others. GM Srinath Narayanan had a 103-move long marathon draw with GM Misratdin Iskandarov (AZE) in the seventh round of Sheikh Russel International GM 2021. Srinath is still in the lead 6.0/7. He is followed by three players at a half point behind, GMs Vitaliy Bernadskiy (UKR), Masoud Mosadeghpour (IRI) and Vugar Rasulov (AZE). Nine players including four Indians are at 5.0/9. GM Srinath Narayanan beat GM Masoud Mosadeghpour (IRI convincingly in the sixth round to extended his lead by full point 5.5/6 at Sheikh Russel International GM 2021. 13 players including five Indians are at a full point behind him at 4.5/6 each. They are - GMs Stany G A, Shyam Sundar M, Visakh N R, IMs Mitrabha Guha and Aditya Mittal. Mitrabha defeated GM P Karthikeyan and Aditya drew with GM Misratdin Iskandarov (AZE). GM Srinath Narayanan made a quick 16-move draw with GM Vugar Asadli (AZE) to maintain his lead 4.5/5 at the conclusion of the fifth round of Sheikh Russel International GM 2021. GM Masoud Mosadeghpour (IRI) beat IM Mitrabha Guha to join Srinath in the lead. Six players are at a half point behind 4.0/5 each. IM Aditya Mittal is the only Indian among them. He scored a nice win over GM Debashis Das where the former showed great positional understanding. Abhimanyu Puranik clinches 3rd Yerevan Open

GM Abhimanyu Puranik scored an unbeaten 7.5/9 to clinch 3rd Yerevan Open. This is his third tournament triumph of the year. He won the Riga Technical University Rapid Open in August, individual and team Gold at Asian University in September and now his first Classical tournament win of the year with a performance of 2741. He won a beautiful trophy and AMD 2,000,000 (approx. ₹314781). GMs Vitaly Sivuk (UKR) and Arman Mikaelyan (ARM) also finished with the same score. GM Vitaliy Bernadskiy (UKR) imploded against GM Srinath Narayanan in the fourth round of Sheikh Russel International GM 2021. Thus, Srinath emerged as the sole leader with a 100% score 4.0/4. Six players are at a half point behind him 3.5/5, including only two Indian players - GM Shyam Sundar M and IM Mitrabha Guha. GM Debashis Das drew with top seed GM Sergei Tiviakov (NED). MPL Sports Foundation to sponsor Rs.1 crore each year for Indian chess

It's good news for Indian chess that more and more corporates are getting involved in the sport. The latest one being MPL Foundation signing a historic agreement with the All India Chess Federation for Rs. 1 crore per year (with 20% increase each year) for the Indian National Championships for the next five years. GMs Srinath Narayanan and Vitaliy Bernadskiy (UKR) emerged as the early leaders at the conclusion of the third round of Sheikh Russel International GM 2021. While the top four out of six games ended in draws, the next nine games had decisive results. IMs Neelash Saha, Koustav Chatterjee and Mitrabha registered impressive victories over GMs Deepan Chakkravarthy, Visakh N R and Enamul Hossain. Bangladesh's legends had a tough day as GMs Niaz Murshed, Ziaur Rahman and WIM Rani Hamid lost to GM Debashis Das, FM Aminul Islam and 10-year-old CM Manon Reja Neer respectively. Abhimanyu Puranik is on the verge of winning 3rd Yerevan Open

GM Abhimanyu Puranik scored a hat-trick by beating the seemingly unstoppable GM Vitaly Sivuk (UKR) in the penultimate round of 3rd Yerevan Open. Both of them were having a huge momentum heading into the clash with championship implications. Abhimanyu has taken a sole lead 7.0/8 for the first time in this event. Narayanan, Sivuk and Arman Mikaelyan (ARM) are the three players at 6.5/8 each. A draw in the final round should secure the championship for Abhimanyu even if all tie-break scores matches with Sivuk, he will be ahead in direct encounter. 13 players including six Indians are at 100% score 2.0/2 at Sheikh Russel International GM 2021. They are - GMs Srinath Narayanan, Stany G A and Shyam Sundar M, IMs Aronyak Ghosh, Sayantan Das and Sammed Jaykumar Shete. All six of them will face each other in the third round. Srinath made a short work of Bangladesh's legendary GM Ziaur Rahman in just 20 moves. The host country's first-ever GM Niaz Murshed made a nice save against IM Mitrabha Guha using a nice tactic.
