Sarayu Velpula becomes the 26th Woman Grandmaster of India

Sarayu Velpula became India's 26th Woman Grandmaster at First League of Central Serbia. She scored her final norm at that event last month. The former National Under-13 Girls champion, scored her first WIM, WGM and IM-norms, all three at the same event in Pontevedra Masters 2023 in July. The girl from Warangal, Telangana, crossed 2300 in the September 2023 FIDE Rating list as she got a published rating of 2386. A little less than two years after scoring her first WGM-norm, Sarayu earned her second norm at Paris IdF Masters in July 2025. Her journey continues as she joins the Indian team at the FIDE World Women's Team Championship 2025 starting today in Linares, Spain. Photo: Shahid Ahmed

World Cup 2025 QF1: Arjun plays a Grandmaster draw against Wei Yi, Yakubboev outplays Donchenko

The first result of FIDE World Cup 2025 Quarterfinals 1 was a Grandmaster draw between Arjun Erigaisi and Wei Yi (CHN). The game lasted for a little less than an hour. Pieces got exchanged at a regular interval. Every move was a material exchange from move no.10 to 17. It was evident from the play that neither side is going to push for the maximum today. Both just wanted to test the waters. The sole decisive game of the day was played by Nodirbek Yakubboev (UZB) and Alexander Donchenko (GER). It seemed like Donchenko has still not shaken off the cobwebs of his tie-break games against Liem Quang Le (VIE) on the previous day. India wins 13 medals at Asian Schools Chess Championships 2025

India has won 13 medals including 8 individual (2 Gold, 3 Silver and 3 Bronze) medals, 5 team (1 Gold, 2 Silver and 2 Bronze) medals at Asian Schools Chess Championships 2025. Shreyanshi Jain won Silver in Classical, Gold in Rapid and Bronze in Blitz in Under-7 Girls category. Nakshatra Gumudavelly is the only other Indian to have won an individual Gold. She clinched it in Under-9 Girls Rapid. Samuel Stephen Noble S and Kavish Bhattad secured Silver in Under-13 Open Classical and Under-7 Open Rapid respectively. Aadik Theophane Lenin clear first at Grand Chess Festival Rating Open 2025

Aadik Theophane Lenin scored an unbeaten 8/9 to win Grand Chess Festival Rating Open 2025. He finished a half point ahead of the rest. IM Aaditya Dhingra scored sole 7.5/9 to secure second place. Eight players scored 7/9 each. Out of them, the top seed, IM Md. Imran was placed third. The total prize fund was ₹1233333. The top three prizes were ₹121333, ₹110000 and ₹51000 along with a trophy and medal each. The five-day nine round Rating Open tournament was organized by Honest Sports Academy and MSME Promotion Council of India at Himalaya Public School in Chatrapati Sambhaji Nagar, Maharashtra from 25th to 29th October 2025. This is Aadik's eleventh overall, third rating tournament triumph of the year.

GM Mitrabha Guha and IM Akshat Khamparia scored an unbeaten 8.5/9 each at 2nd Shri Dadaji Dhuniwale Rapid Rating Open 2025. Mitrabha won the tournament on tie-breaks, Akshat secured second place. IM Aaryan Varshney, Deepak Bamne, IM Anuj Shrivatri and Sangharsh Soni scored 8/9 each. They were placed third to sixth respectively. The total prize fund was ₹250000. The top three prizes were ₹30000, ₹20000 and ₹10000 along with a trophy each. The two-day nine round Rapid Rating Open tournament was organized by Khandwa District Chess Association at Arvind Kumar Nitin Kumar H S School in Khandwa, Madhya Pradesh on 25th and 26th October 2025. This is Mitrabha's 14th overall, twelfth rating tournament triumph of the year.

Jose Eduardo Martinez Alcantara (MEX) eliminated Pentala Harikrishna to secure his place in the Quarterfinals of FIDE World Cup 2025. The first two 15'+10" Rapid tie-break games ended in draws. Then Jose won the first 10'+10" Rapid tie-break game and drew the next to set up a clash against Javokhir Sindarov in Round 6. Sam Shankland (USA), Andrey Esipenko and Alexander Donchenko (GER) were the other victors of the day. They knocked out Daniil Dubov, Aleksey Grebnev and Liem Quang Le (VIE). IM Mohammad Nubairshah Shaikh, IM Ameya Audi, IM Ravi Teja S, IM Srijit Paul, IM Suyog Wagh, IM Nitish Belurkar and Shriraj Bhosale scored 8/9 each at Satish Anna Rapid Rating Open 2025. Nubairshah won the tournament on tie-breaks. The remaining six were placed second to seventh respectively according to tie-breaks. The total prize fund was ₹400000. The top three prizes were ₹100000, ₹50000 and ₹25000 along with a trophy each. The two-day nine round Rapid Rating Open tournament was organized by Satish Anna Fans Club at Mahaveer Bhavan in Belagavi, Karnataka on 25th and 26th October 2025. This is Nubairshah's fifth tournament triumph of the year.

Arjun Erigaisi defeated his second consecutive legend, Levon Aronian, to advance to the Quarterfinals of FIDE World Cup 2025. This is the second consecutive edition where Arjun has reached the Quarterfinal stage. His sixth round opponent will be Wei Yi (CHN). Both Arjun and Wei are undefeated so far. Arjun became the first player to secure his place the Quarterfinals in this edition. Pentala Harikrishna drew his second Classical game against Jose Eduardo Martinez Alcantara (MEX). They will have to play tie-breaks tomorrow. Nodirbek Yakubboev and Javokhir Sindarov are the two Uzbekistan players to have secured their place in the final eight. GM Daniel Howard Fernandez (ENG) defeated GM Lalit Rohit to emerge sole leader at Commonwealth Chess Championship 2025 Open. Daniel is now at 6.5/7. IM Neelash Saha won against IM James Morris (AUS) to move to 6/7. He is the sole pursuer trailing the leader by a half point. James, GM Deep Sengupta, FM Arjun Adireddy and GM Deepan Chakkravarthy are at 5.5/7 each. Arjun got the better of GM Sayantan Das when the latter went wrong in the endgame. Deepan defeated India's latest GM Raahul V S. IM Nisha Mohota and WGM Nandhidhaa P V are at 5/7 each. Arjun Erigaisi and Pentala Harikrishna made solid draws in the first game of the fifth round of FIDE World Cup 2025. Arjun as always made an attempt to gain upper hand against Levon Aronian (USA). However, neither player made any significant mistake in the game. Harikrishna drew against the Mexico no.1. The better part of the game followed a few other games which had the same outcome. Former World Rapid champion, Daniil Dubov had a great chance in the endgame against Sam Shankland (USA). However, Dubov did not play the precise continuation and allowed his opponent to escape with a draw. Javokhir Sindarov (UZB) scored the sole win of the day against Frederik Svane (GER). FIDE World Cup 2025 R4 TB: Arjun Erigaisi and Pentala Harikrishna advance to Round of 16

Arjun Erigaisi and Pentala Harikrishna won their respective tie-breaks to advance to the fifth round of FIDE World Cup 2025. Arjun won both 15'+10" Rapid tie-break games against the legend, Peter Leko. On the other hand, Harikrishna saved a tough position in the first one. In the second 15'+10" Rapid game, Harikrishna played fine chess to beat his longtime Novy Bor teammate and Sweden no.1, Nils Grandelius. Two-time Asian Junior champion, Aleksey Grebnev eliminated former World Blitz champion, Maxime Vachier-Lagrave. GM Abdimalik Abdisalimov (UZB) scored an unbeaten 7.5/9 to win Hoogeveen Open 2025. He finished a half point ahead of the rest. GM Sandipan Chanda scored sole 7/9 to secure second place. GM Harikrishnan A Ra, IM Nico Zwirs (NED) and GM Ortik Nigmatov (GER) scored 6.5/9 each. They secured third, fourth and fifth place according to tie-breaks. Abdimalik drew against both runners-up, Sandipan and Harikrishnan. The top three prizes were €3000 + trophy, €2000 and €1250. The eight-day nine round Rating Open tournament  was organized by Stichting Schaaktoernooi Hoogeveen at Town Hall in Hoogeveen, Netherlands from 18th to 25th October 2025.
