7th Gashimov Memorial Blitz R1-7: Mamedyarov makes an impressive start

Shakhriyar Mamedyarov has once again beaten Richard Rapport. The tournament leader lost the following round against Navara. Mamedyarov scored 5.0/7, Rapport and Caruana scored 4.5/7, followed by Navara and Asadli 4.0/7 each. Rapport is currently just 1.5 points ahead of Mamedyarov at 20.5/28. The most exciting game of the day has to be between Rauf Mamedov and Rapport in Round 5. The former was completely winning till the latter made a comeback. Anand is struggling with his form as he made five draws and still in search for his first win in Blitz. The last seven rounds of Blitz will be played today, starting from 4:30 p.m. IST. 8th Sunway Sitges Open R8: Arjun Erigaisi, Sethuraman and Abhimanyu Puranik in the title fray

Top two boards ending in draws ensured more people can catch up with the leaders in Round 8 of 8th Sunway Sitges Open 2021 Group A. Arjun Erigaisi, Sethuraman and Abhimanyu Puranik are the only three Indians among the eight-pack leaders 6.5/8. They are closely followed by a dozen players at 6.0/8. The Indian players among them are - Nihal Sarin, Harsha Bharathakoti, Sankalp Gupta and IM Pranav Anand. 7th Gashimov Memorial R6-7: Rapport and Karjakin top Rapid standings

Richard Rapport lost to Shakhriyar Mamedyarov 0-3 in Round 6. He beat David Navara 3-0 in Round 7 to finish at the top of the Rapid standings at 7th Vugar Gashimov Memorial 2021. Sergey Karjakin beat Vugar Asadli and Rauf Mamedov 3-0 to tie with Rapport at the top of the points table 16.0/21. Caruana and Mamedyarov are close behind at 14.0/16 each. Vishy Anand had another tough day as he lost both of his matches against Caruana and Asadli. He was completely winning in three out of four games. Laxman R R wins 1st YSR All India Open 2021

Top seed of the tournament, GM Laxman R R of Integral Coach Factory, scored an unbeaten 8.5/10 along with IM Krishna Teja N and IM Himal Gusain at 1st YSR All India Open Rating. Laxman won the tournament due to better tie-break score, Krishna and Himal were placed second and third respectively. The tournament had the total prize fund of ₹301000 with the first prize being ₹30000 cash. It took place from 4th to 9th December at Swarnabharathi Indoor Stadium, at Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. This is Laxman's second consecutive tournament triumph after winning a Rapid Rating event last month in Madhya Pradesh and first Classical triumph since September 2019 when he won All India Railway Championship.

8th Sunway Sitges Open R7: Abhimanyu Puranik joins the four-way lead

Tournament leaders Dmitrij Kollars (GER) and Nodirbek Abdusattorov (UZB) drew their game against each other, which allowed Ivan Cheparinov (BUL) and Abhimanyu Puranik to catch up with them 6.0/7 in Round 7 of 8th Sunway Sitges Open 2021 Group A. Abdusattorov will face Abhimanyu and Cheparinov will be up against Kollars in Round 8. Arjun Erigaisi, Sethuraman and Harsha Bharathakoti maintain their chase 5.5/7 each. 7th Gashimov Memorial R4-5: Rapport takes sole lead and now World no.6 in Rapid

Richard Rapport beat both Vugar Asadli and Rauf Mamedov 3-0 in Round 4 and 5 respectively to take sole lead 13.0/15 at the conclusion of the third day in 7th Vugar Gashimov Memorial 2021 Rapid. Vishy Anand lost the second game against Karjakin after the first game ended in a quick draw. Anand beat Mamedyarov in Armageddon after both Rapid games did not yield any result. Caruana-Karjakin Armageddon also ended in a draw, since the Russian had the Black pieces, he won the match. Karjakin is now at 10.0/15, a full point behind Caruana 11.0/15. 8th Sunway Sitges Open R6: Abdusattorov and Kollars are the new leaders

Nodirbek Abdusattorov (UZB) ended Sethuraman's unbeaten run as he defeated the tournament leader in the sixth round of 8th Sunway Sitges Open 2021 Group A. Abdusattorov is joined by Dmitrij Kollars (GER) in the lead 5.5/6. They will face each other in the seventh round. Sethuraman and Abhimanyu Puranik are just a half point behind them at 5.0/6 each. Eight Indian players are at 4.5/6. They are - GM Nihal Sarin, GM Arjun Erigaisi, GM Harsha Bharathakoti, GM Neelotpal Das, IM Aditya Mittal, IM Pranesh M, WGM Mary Ann Gomes and untitled Sharan Rao who is having a phenomenal tournament so far. It was a long day for Vishy Anand as he started Round 2 with a loss against Richard Rapport. He had a couple of good chances in the second game, unfortunately he was unable to seize them and the game ended in a draw after 89 moves. The first game of Round 3 went for a 119 moves before he lost against David Navara in a rook vs rook and bishop endgame. The second encounter against the Czech no.1 ended in a draw which means Anand lost both matches 0-3. He is now at 1.0/9. Fabiano Caruana won both his matches to take sole lead 8.0/9. Asian Junior 2021 R1-5: Raahul and Savitha in sole lead 5.0/5

The reigning AICF National Junior Online 2021 champions, IM Raahul V S and WIM Savitha Shri B are the sole leaders with a 100% score 5.0/5 at the conclusion of the fifth round of Asian Junior 2021. Raahul beat top seed GM Mitrabha Guha in an incredible game where both players left everything they had on the board, in the end the former clinched the victory. Savitha also had an interesting encounter with WIM Priyanka K where the latter got an opportunity to save the game which was not at all easy to spot. Indian Chess League will take place in June 2022

The Indian Chess League is all set to take place in June 2022. As announced at the press conference which was held in Delhi on the 14th of December 2021, it will be a cash-rich over the board league with a total prize fund of Rs.2 crore. Gameplan Sports Private limited, the company that has been instrumental in organizing the Tata Steel Chess India tournament in Kolkata, has bought the rights from AICF for a price of Rs. 2 crore per annum. Contracts were exchanged between AICF and Gameplan and the Indian Chess League will soon become a reality. 

Anish Gandhi wins Late Shripad Kulkarni Memorial All India Rating Open

Fourth seeded Anish Gandhi scored 8.5/10, edged past Shriraj Bhosale on tie-breaks to clinch Late Shripad Kulkarni Memorial All India Open 2021. Four players - Ajay Kumar Rai, Yash Kapadi, Om Nagnath Lamkane and Aditya Bartakke scored 8.0/10 each. They were placed third to sixth accoring to tie-breaks. The tournament had the total prize fund of ₹101000 with the first prize being ₹21000 cash and a rolling trophy. 7th Gashimov Memorial R1: Mamedov beats Anand in Armageddon

Vishy Anand got back to over-the-board action for the first time in five months. He won the last event he played, No Castling World Masters against Kramnik back in July. The maestro won the first Rapid game against Rauf Mamedov, however he lost the second one. Thus, Armageddon was enforced. With less than ten seconds left on the clock and without any increment, it was quite difficult for him to find and most importantly execute the win in so less time. Mamedov won the Armageddon and the match. Shakhriyar Mamedyarov, Richard Rapport and Fabiano Caruana defeated David Navara, Sergey Karjakin and Vugar Asadli each respectively. A pre-requisite for an organization to become world class is to have competent people working for it in key managerial positions. This is exactly what FIDE has done by roping in Dana Reizniece-Ozola as the managing director. A look at her credentials and you can have no doubts about her competency. Dana is a former Minister of Economics of Latvia as well as its Finance Minister! She has a Masters in Business Administration, has been the head of space programs and her list of achievements is quite huge. To add to all of this, she is also a strong chess player - a WGM with an Elo of 2283. At the World Championship 2021 in Dubai, IM Sagar Shah met with Dana and had a detailed interview about her journey of life, becoming FIDE's managing director, her vision for FIDE and much more.

8th Sunway Sitges Open R5: Sethuraman makes a perfect start 5.0/5

Sethuraman outplayed his opponent Denis Kadric (BIH) to score his fifth consecutive victory and gain sole lead heading into the only rest day of 8th Sunway Sitges Open 2021 Group A. Abhimanyu Puranik scored an academic victory to be in a pack of seven players at 4.5/5. Neelotpal Das had a very good opportunity to beat Aydin Suleymanli (AZE), he missed, and it ended in a draw. Neelotpal, Arjun Erigaisi and Mary Ann Gomes are at 4.0/5 each. Daniel Dardha brought Soumya's great run to a halt as she was unable to find a draw in the same color bishop ending. The mathematical odds of getting a Rook and Pawn ending is much higher than any other endgame in a practical game. Anyone who has played or still plays tournaments/training games can attest to that. While most of the Rook and Pawn endings are believed to end in draws, it would not surprise anyone to know how easily anyone makes a mistake in these of endgames despite knowing the theory, in all levels of chess.
