World Amateur 2023: Kartavya Anadkat and Sham R secure Silver, Bronze for Velavaa Ragavesh

FM Abilmansur Abdilkhair (KAZ) scored an unbeaten 8/9 to win Gold at World Amateur Championship in Under-2300 Open category. He finished a full point ahead of the rest. Kartavya Anadkat and FM Marko Fadi (EGY) scored 7/9 each. Kartavya won Silver and Marko Bronze according to tie-breaks. Amarsaikhan Dashtogtokh (MGL) clinched Gold with a perfect 9/9 in Under-2000 Open. Sham R scored 7.5/9 to secure Silver. Velavaa Ragavesh edged past seven more players on tie-breaks to win Bronze medal scoring 6.5/9. The total prize fund of the tournament was €15000. The top three prizes in U2300 Open were €2000, €1500 and €1000 along with a cup and medal each. Kerala vs Cuba, Nihal vs Praggnanandhaa set to take place at Che International Chess Festival 2023

Government of Kerala is organizing Che International Chess Festival at Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala from 16th to 20th November. There will be simultaneous exhibition matches, young talents tournament, Kerala vs Cuba team match in all three formats, chess training sessions by IM V Saravanan and GM FST R B Ramesh and the main attraction will be India no.3, GM R Praggnanandhaa vs India no.7, GM Nihal Sarin. They will play ten Blitz games on Monday 20th November 2023. Cuban team members are: GM Dylan Isidro Berdayes Ason, GM Elier Miranda Mesa, IM Rodney Oscar Perez Garcia and WGM Lisandra Ordaz Valdes. Kerala team members are: GM S L Narayanan, IM Jubin Jimmy, FM Goutham Krishna H and WIM Nimmy A G.

The All India Chess Federation announces Rs.2 crore (US$240,459) assistance to Vidit, Pragg and Vaishali

FIDE Candidates tournament will be held in April 2024 in Canada. Leading up to this all-important event that will determine the World Championship challenger, the AICF has announced a financial assistance to Vidit Gujrathi, R. Praggnanandhaa and R.Vaishali to the tune of Rs.2 crore (US$240,459). This amount will be divided between the three of them and will be used for their training, travel, building a team and much more. It is truly a fantastic move by the National federation to support the Candidates of India!

"It's the biggest win of my career" - Vidit Gujrathi on winning FIDE Grand Swiss 2023

At the age of 29 years, Vidit Gujrathi has done something very special. He won the FIDE Grand Swiss and made a spot for himself at the FIDE Candidates 2024. After he landed in India, Vidit was in the city of Mumbai for a couple of days, just spending some time with his friend Samay Raina. Sagar Shah went to meet Vidit and did this podcast with him. It is an intimate conversation where Vidit speaks about what the title means to him, the role of his family and parents, reveals his trainers, how his Guru Om Swami has motivated him and much more. This Podcast gives an insight not into Vidit Gujrathi the chess player, but rather the personal side of this world class GM.

Pranesh M wins 32nd Caen Open 2023, Nubairshah third

GM Pranesh M, IM Vladyslav Larkin (UKR) and IM Mohammad Nubairshah Shaikh scored an unbeaten 6/7 each at 32nd Caen Open A 2023. Pranesh became champion due to better tie-breaks, Larkin second and Nubairshah third. Pranesh drew against Larkin and Nubairshah in fifth and seventh round respectively. Pranesh and Nubairshah were the only two Indians taking part in this event. The total prize fund was €3800. The top three prizes were €1000 + trophy, €600 and €400 each respectively. This is Pranesh's fourth tournament triumph of the year after starting 2023 by becoming India's 79th Grandmaster and winning Rilton Cup 2022-23. 36th National Under-9 Open and Girls Round 10-11: Advik Amit Agrawal wins Open, Samhita Pungavanam wins in Girls

The National Under-9 Championships came to a predictable end on 8th November, 2023. Advik Amit Agrawal (1378, MAH) and Samhita Pungavanam (1345, TEL) were both leading with 9/10 points in the Open and Girls section respectively going into the final 11th round. Both of them won their last round game to become the champions! They were awarded Rs. 50,000 each, and the winner trophies. Rahul Ramakrishnan (1531, PUD) took 2nd place in the Open section with 9.5/11 points, and Jai Prakash Vanum (1287, AP) took 3rd place with 9/11 points. In the Girls category, Pooja Shree R (1249, TN) took 2nd place with 9/11 points, and Divi Bijesh (1170, KER) took 3rd place with 8.5/11 points. Read the final report of this event below. Vitaliy Bernadskiy triumphs at 1st Cidade de Lagos Open 2023, Ameya Audi third

GM Vitaliy Bernadskiy (UKR), GM Eltaj Safarli (AZE), IM Ameya Audi and IM Manuel Bosboom (NED) scored an unbeaten 7/9 each at 1st Cidade de Lagos Open 2023. Vitaliy won the tournament on tie-breaks. The remaining three were placed second to fourth respectively. Ameya drew with the eventual champion, Bernadskiy in the fourth round. IM Himal Gusain is the only other Indian to make a top ten finish. The sixth seed scored 6.5/9 to finish sixth. The total prize fund of the tournament was €4000. Kishan Kumar wins 3rd Aparna Dutta Memorial Rating Open 2023

Kishan Kumar and Iftikar Alom Mazumdar scored an unbeaten 8.5/10 each at 3rd Aparna Dutta Memorial Rating Open 2023. Kishan won the tournament due to better tie-breaks, Iftikar was placed second. 12-year-old Oishik Mondal scored sole 8/10 to secure third place. Kishan faced Iftikar in the sixth round which ended in a draw. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹301000. The top three prizes were ₹40000, ₹30000 and ₹20000 along with a trophy each respectively. This is Kishan's third overall, second rating tournament triumph of the year after winning Chess for Everyone in Sagar, Madhya Pradesh nearly five and a half months ago. Deep Sengupta clinches 21st Capechecs Open 2023, Sayantan Das second

GM Deep Sengupta and GM Sayantan Das scored 7.5/9 each at Capechecs Open part of 21st Cap d'Agde Grand Prix International 2023. Deep won the tournament due to better tie-breaks, Sayantan secured second place. Deep remained unbeaten. He went into the final round with a sole lead 7/8, a half point ahead of the rest and drew against GM Bilel Bellahcene (ALG). Bilel finished third 7/9. Sayantan defeated IM Mehar Chinna Reddy C H to finish second. Mehar was placed eighth. GM Raja Rithvik R is the only other Indian to make a top ten finish. He scored 6.5/9 to finish ninth. The total prize fund was €12000. The top three prizes were €3000 + trophy, €1800 and €1400 each respectively. Nandhidhaa wins 4th Tamil Nadu IM-norm Closed Circuit 2023, Srihari L second

WGM Nandhidhaa P V and Srihari L scored 6.5/9 each at 4th Tamil Nadu IM-norm Closed Circuit Chess Tournament 2023. Nandhidhaa won the tournament as she started the event with a victory over Srihari. Thus, her tie-breaks were better. IM David Gochelashvili scored sole 5.5/9 to finish third. Nandhidhaa's 2465 performance earned her fifth IM-norm. She now requires to fulfill the rating criteria to become India's next International Master. Nandhidhaa also gained 46.8 Elo rating points in the process. The Tamil Nadu IM-norm Closed Circuit tournaments have already produced three IM-norms out of the four events. That definitely speaks about the success of the events. We launched "ChessPa in Chess Adventure Park" - an illustrated children's chess book on 14th of November 2022, a year ago.
