VISA issues stop 5 Indian players from participating in the World Junior Championships 2023

The World Junior Chess Championships are set to take place at Mexico City, Mexico from 20th September - 2nd October 2023. As expected, a large number of Indian players were qualified to take part in the event. But the Indian players have encountered an unexpected problem in their travels to this prestigious event. 5 of the Indian players - namely Vrashank Chauhan, Arun Kataria, Bhagyashree Patil, GM Prraneeth Vuppala and Femil Chelladurai were not granted with VISA to take part in this event. In this article, we share their statements and try to shed light on the issues faced by the players.

School boy Hari Ganesh lifts 21st Adyar Times Rating Open 2023 Trophy

15-year-old Hari Ganesh T and FM Vinoth Kumar M scored an unbeaten 7.5/8 at 21st Adyar Times Rating Open 2023. The teenager won the tournament due to better tie-breaks and Vinoth secured second place. Six players - Kavishvaran P, Malla Nooka Raju, Selvamurugan B, Sridhar C S, Raghav V and IM Ramnathan Balasubramaniam scored 7/8 each. Kavishvaran was adjudged third among them. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹250000. The top three prizes were ₹35000 + trophy, ₹25000 and ₹15000 each respectively. This is Hari's first Rating and overall second tournament triumph of his career. His first tournament victory happened earlier this year when he won Changalpattu District Under-17 Boys Tournament 2023. Praggnanandhaa overpowers Cheparinov and Vitiugov, now World no.16

India no.3 GM R Praggnanandhaa defeated GM Ivan Cheparinov (Magic Extremadura) and GM Nikita Vitiugov (C A Jaime Casas de Monzon) to become World no.16 in the live ratings. Praggnanandhaa is playing for the defending champion team, C A Solvay which won the Spanish Team Championship Honor Division last year. India no.1 GM D Gukesh is the only other Indian in his team. Currently, Gukesh is playing in Armageddon Championship Series 2023 Grand Finale. So he is yet to join the team. GM Raunak Sadhwani and GM S L Narayanan are playing for the same team MyInvestor Casablanca. Raunak made a perfect 2/2 start like Praggnanandhaa. Can C A Solvay win it again for the second consecutive year? We will know in the next few days. Arpita Mukherjee wins Tata Steel Chess Festival 2023 Women Rapid

WIM Arpita Mukherjee and Sinthia Sarkar scored 7/8 each at Tata Steel Chess Festival 2023 All India Women Rapid. The top seed of the event, Arpita won the tournament due to better tie-breaks, Sinthia secured second place. The defending champion, WCM Bristy Mukherjee scored sole 6.5/8 to finish third. Top three prizes were ₹20000 + trophy, ₹15000 and ₹10000 each respectively. This was Arpita's second tournament triumph of the year. Earlier this year, she won 20th National Team Women 2023. A super talent spotted! 7-year-old Advitiya from Meghalaya

India is a land of amazing talents in chess. And the talents are sprouting from different corners of the country. Meet 2016-born 7-year-old Advitiya AG, who lives in Shillong, Meghalaya. The boy became the under-12 state champion when he was just 5 years old. Currently, he has a rating of 1182. IM Sagar Shah speaks with Advitiya and asks him some questions based on the different positions he has selected, while Advitiya has his own list of questions he wants to ask IM Sagar Shah. Advitiya is soon to play in the under-7 nationals happening in Kolkata. If groomed well, this boy could very well become a future GM of India and perhaps the first from Meghalaya!

Shubham Kumar wins SLAN 1st Below 1600 Rating Tournament 2023

Shubham Kumar, Yashvi Jain, Sathwik D S S U, Vangala Prashanth and Gagan Sahu scored 8/9 each at SLAN 1st Below 1600 Rating Tournament 2023. Shubham won the tournament due to better tie-breaks. The remaining four were placed second to fifth. Except Prashanth, the remaining four were undefeated. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹1000000. The top three prizes were ₹100000, ₹60000 and ₹40000 along with a trophy each respectively. The tournament was organized by SLAN Sports from 25th to 27th August 2023 at Sri Kotla Vijaya Bhaskar Reddy Indoor Stadium in Hyderabad, Telangana. Tata Steel Asian Junior Blitz 2023: Grebnev & Mounika win Gold, Kushagra & Bhagyashree Silver, Manish & Bristy Bronze

WIM Mounika Akshaya defeated WCM Bristy Mukherjee to clinch the Gold at Tata Steel Asian Junior Blitz 2023 Girls. She scored 7.5/9 and finished a half point ahead of the field. Four girls scored 7/9 each. Out of them, WFM Bhagyashree Patil and WCM Bristy Mukherjee secured Silver and Bronze according to tie-breaks. IM Manish Anto Cristiano F lost to IM Aleksey Grebnev in the final round. Thus, Grebnev earned his second Gold of the event 7.5/9. IM Kushagra Mohan won against IM Srihari L R in the final round. He also scored 7.5/9. However, he secured Silver as per tie-breaks. They both finished a full point ahead of the rest. Manish edged past CM Mayank Chakraborty to win the Bronze scoring 6.5/9. Armageddon Championship Series 2023 Grand Finale: Bibisara loses to Humpy 1-2

GM Koneru Humpy started her day with a loss against IM Bibisara Assaubayeva (KAZ). The India no.1 struck back in the must-win second game. Despite being lost for the better part of the game, Humpy persevered, waited for her opportunity and she seized it eventually. This win put her in the right mood. In Armageddon, Humpy did not give chance to her opponent and eventually managed to checkmate to win the game and match. Humpy won both of her games by delivering a checkmate. GM Nodirbek Abdusattorov (UZB) defeatd GM Richard Rapport (ROU) 2-1 in the other match of the day. Humpy will face Abdusattorov tomorrow, Sunday 17th September from 7 p.m. local time, 10:30 p.m. IST. Tejaswini G drew against WIM Mounika Akshaya to clinch the Gold at Tata Steel Asian Junior 2023 Girls. She scored an unbeaten 7.5/9, finished a half point ahead of the field, became India's latest Woman International Master and also secured her maiden WGM-norm. WCM Bristy Mukherjee defeated the top seed WIM Nazerke Nurgali (KAZ) to win the Silver medal 7/9. She also finished a half point ahead of the field and earned her maiden WIM-norm. Mounika got the Bronze medal 6.5/9. In the Open section, top seed IM Aleksey Grebnev defeated Alekhya Mukhopadhyay to clinch the Gold 7/9. FM Aswath S won against IM Sambit Panda to secure Silver 7/9 and also became India's latest International Master. FM Ayush Sharma drew against IM S Rohith Krishna. D Gukesh defeated Wesley So on the first day of Armageddon Championship Series 2023 Grand Finale. The India no.1 convincingly defeated So in both games. Gukesh had never won a rated Blitz game against the former World Fischer Random champion. Last evening, he was determined to change that statistic. Jan-Krzysztof Duda (POL) defeated Sam Shankland (USA) 2-0. Gukesh will face Duda on Sunday 17th September. Since it is a double elimination event, So will face Shankland on Saturday 16th September. Chess in Lakecity invites you to 8th N L Pandiyar Memorial Rating Open 2023

The eighth edition of Rajasthan's longest running rating tournament is exactly a month away. Over 300 players including an IM have already registered for it from various parts of the country. From 15th to 19th October 2023, it will take place at Orbit Resort, Udaipur. The first edition took place back in 2009. Kartavya Anadkat won the seventh edition last year. The total prize fund is same as last year ₹1501000. Total number of prizes are 159. On Monday 11th September, Velammal Nexus hosted a grand felicitation ceremony to honor the remarkable achievements of their students and coach. GM D Gukesh, GM R Praggnanandhaa, Gold and Bronze medal winning teams at FIDE World School Team Championships 2023, Tennis player - Haritha Sree and Coach Velavan were felicitated. Both Gukesh and Praggnanandhaa received ₹2000000 (US$ 24100+ or €22440) each for becoming India no.1, World no.8 and securing Silver at FIDE World Cup 2023 respectively. Tata Steel Asian Junior 2023 R8: Tejaswini G on the verge of winning Gold

Tejaswini G defeated WCM Bristy Mukherjee to emerge sole leader 7/8 heading into the final round of Tata Steel Asian Junior 2023 Girls. She is now a full point ahead of the field. WIM Nazerke Nurgali (KAZ), WIM Bommini Mounika Akshaya and Bristy are trailing at 6/8 each. Tejaswini needs a draw against Mounika in the final round to clinch the Gold. IM Aleksey Grebnev, IM S Rohith Krishna, FM Ayush Sharma and FM Aswath S are at 6/8 each. Top three boards ended in draws. Ayush defeated IM Gilbert Elroy Tarigan (INA) to join the lead and put himself in the medal contention. It will be Ayush v Rohith, Grebnev v Alekhya and Aswath v IM Sambit Panda in the final round.
