St. Xavier, The Sanskaar Valley and Carmel Convent win Khelo Chess India Inter-school trophy

ChessBase India's Khelo Chess India Mission is gaining momentum towards the aim of creating 1000 chess players in Bhopal, the capital of Madhya Pradesh. The 20th edition of Khelo Chess India, the first ever Inter-School Trophy was organized on 15th October 2023. A record number of 235 players participated in the competition, of which 198 played in the boys' category and 37 in the girls' category. St. Xavier's School, The Sanskaar Valley School and Carmel Convent School won the team championships in different categories. In the Under 12, Under 15 and Under 19 age categories, 18 medals were given to players in both boys and girls categories. Read all about the event in this article below.

Qatar Masters 2023 R5: S L Narayanan displaces India no.1 Gukesh, gains sole lead

GM S L Narayanan defeated the India no.1 and World no.8 GM D Gukesh to emerge sole leader at Qatar Masters 2023. The India no.8 got a great position early in the middlegame and kept posing difficult questions to his opponent. It liquidated into a queen endgame which only computer can play precisely and save the day. Gukesh is human and he erred which allowed Narayanan to win the game and move to 4.5/5. A dozen players are trailing him at 4/5 each. The World no.1 GM Magnus Carlsen (NOR) bounced back by scoring a victory over GM Bharath Subramaniyam H. IM Vaishali R continues her impressive unbeaten run. She defeated 44th Olympiad Gold medalist, GM Shamsiddin Vokhidov (UZB) to move to 4/5. Today is a rest day. Indian Delegation withdraws from World Cadets 2023 at Egypt

The FIDE World Cadets Chess Championships is scheduled to be held at Sharm el Sheikh, Egypt from 16th-26th October 2023. However, due to the severe conflict between Israel and Hamas going on right now at the Gaza strip, and Egypt sharing a border with Israel, the 83-member Indian delegation has withdrawn from the World Cadets this year. The event was originally scheduled to start from 14th October, but after an one-day postponement it is starting from 16th October. In this article, we bring you the views of the Indian players, coaches and officials about this situation. 

Mitrabha Guha convincingly clinches Fagernes Autumn Slow Blitz 2023, Rohit third

GM Mitrabha Guha scored an unbeaten 6/7 to win Fagernes Autumn Slow Blitz 2023. He finished a full point ahead of the field. FM Shazil Shehzad (NOR) and S Rohit scored 5/7 each. They secured second and third place respectively. The time control in Slow Blitz was 5 minutes + 3 seconds increment. IM Elham Amar (NOR) and GM Mitrabha Guha - both players scored 8/9 at Fagernes Autumn Blitz II 2023. Mitrabha defeated Elham in the fourth round. However, Elham had better tie-breaks. Thus he became champion and Mitrabha second. FM Ritvik Krishnan scored sole 6.5/9 to finish third. Tamil Nadu to host 50 IM-norm Closed Circuit tournaments

The first ten of 50 Closed Circuit IM-norm tournament starts tomorrow in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. The President of Tamil Nadu State Chess Association - Dr. M Manickam, proposed the idea, to produce more and more International Masters in Tamil Nadu which will eventually result in having more Grandmasters from the state. Thus, the concept of 50 IM-norm tournaments was born. The government of Tamil Nadu has assured to render a helping hand by providing financial assistance. Each tournament carries the prize fund US$ 1000 (approx. ₹85000). Out of the five/six Indians, two will be fielded by AICF and the remaining three/four players will be from home state - Tamil Nadu.

Qatar Masters 2023 R4: Carlsen makes a study-like save against Pranesh

17-year-old GM Pranesh M played excellent against GM Magnus Carlsen (NOR) in the fourth round of Qatar Masters 2023. The teenager had a great chance to push for a win against the World no.1. However, it was not easy to figure out. Instead, he went for the humane rook capture which allowed his opponent to make a study-like escape and it ended in a draw. India no.1 GM D Gukesh defeated GM Mert Yilmazyerli (TUR) to join the seven-way lead 3.5/4. The remaining six players are - GM Hikaru Nakamura (USA), GM Arjun Erigaisi, GM Javokhir Sindarov (UZB), GM S L Narayanan, GM Salem Saleh (UAE) and GM Rinat Jumabayev (KAZ). Vikramaditya Kulkarni clinches Accurate Classical Rating Open 2023 with a perfect 7/7

IM Vikramaditya Kulkarni scored a perfect 7/7 to win Accurate Classical Rating Open 2023. He finished a half point ahead of the competition. Amardeep Bartakke and Arnav Khherdekar scored 6.5/7 each. They were placed second and third according to tie-breaks. The top three finishers remained undefeated. Amardeep drew against Arnav in the final round, while Vikramaditya scored a victory against Ram Vishal Parab. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹250000. Qatar Masters 2023 R3: Aditya Mittal defies World no.7 Anish Giri

Magnus Carlsen (NOR) bounced back with a victory over IM FT Muthaiah Al in the third round of Qatar Masters 2023. Muthaiah did not go down easily. He put up a very good fight. Only in the complex queen and minor piece endgame, he made an inaccuracy which was enough for the World no.1 to seize. GM Aditya Mittal held GM Anish Giri (NED) to a draw. The teenager played really well against the World no.7. GM Arjun Erigaisi and GM S L Narayanan are the only two Indians at 3/3. They are going to face each other in the fourth round. Indrajeet Mahindrakar dominates 12th Kandy Open 2023

Indrajeet Mahindrakar scored an unbeaten 10/11 to win 12th Kandy Open 2023. He finished a half point ahead of the field. Pesandu Rashmitha Liyanage (SRI) scored sole 9/11 to secure second place. IM Romesh Weerawardane (SRI) scored 9/11 to secure third place according to tie-breaks. The total prize fund of the tournament was LKR 1555000. The top three prizes in the Classical event were LKR 150000, 100000 and 75000 along with a trophy and medal each. Pesandu scored an unbeaten 9.5/10 to win the Blitz event. Three players scored 9/10 each. Indrajeet, 7-year-old A P Chenitha Sihas Dinsara Karunasena (SRI) and G K Pasindu Nimsara Dharmakeerthi shared second place scoring 9/10 each. Qatar Masters 2023 R2: Alisher Suleymenov crushes Magnus Carlsen

Magnus Carlsen suffered a crushing defeat against Alisher Suleymenov in the second round of Qatar Masters 2023. The world no.1 tweeted that his opponent scored a crushin victory, he played an amazing game and deserved to win. He also mentioned that as soon as he saw his opponent wearing a watch early in the game, he lost his ability to concentrate. This was certainly the biggest upset of the event so far and perhaps of the year too. However, it was not the only upset of the round. FM Senthil Maran K handed GM Vladimir Fedoseev his second consecutive loss. IM Vaishali R defeated GM Sethuraman S P, exactly on the same day after her immortal win last year. Ritviz Parab becomes the sixth International Master from Goa

23-year-old Ritviz Parab became India's latest International Master on 21st September 2023. He drew against GM Sethuraman S P in the second round of Tsaghkadzor Open 2023 in Armenia, to cross 2400 in the live ratings. The talented youth from Goa also became the fifth IM from his state. Anurag Mhamal, Bhakti Kulkarni, Leon Luke Mendonca, Ameya Audi and Nitish Belurkar are the first five. Ritviz earned his first IM-norm in April 2015 at 15th BCC Open in Pattaya, Thailand. Over 3.5 years later, he secured his second IM-norm at National Senior 2018 in Jammu. The final norm was scored over 4.5 years later at 29th Abu Dhabi Masters 2023 in Abu Dhabi, UAE. Magnus Carlsen (NOR) and Hikaru Nakamura (USA) registered comfortable wins in the first round of Qatar Masters 2023. Anish Giri (NED) stumbled his way towards victory against IM S Rohith Krishna. The teenager missed a good chance to salvage a half point. IM Kushagra Mohan scored a huge upset against GM Vladimir Fedoseev (SLO). The 18-year-old outplayed the Slovenia no.1. IM Mohammad Nubairshah Shaikh got himself very close to score the biggest upset of the round. However, he missed his chance against the Word no.8 and India no.1 GM D Gukesh. The game ended in a draw. Yash Kulhari wins 1st Dhoni's Trophy Below 1600 Rating Tournament 2023

18-year-old Yash Kulhari and Aswin P G scored an unbeaten 8/9 each at 1st Dhoni's Trophy Below 1600 Rating Tournament 2023. Yash won the tournament due to better tie-breaks, Aswin was placed second. Six players - Gudimetla Navaneeth Reddy, Kesavan G, Ebin Benny, Mohit S, Srinivasan Subramaniam and Prasath K R scored 7.5/9 each. They were placed third to eighth respectively according to tie-breaks. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹680000. Total 198 prizes including 98 cash prize and 100 trophies were up for grabs. The top three prizes were ₹51000, ₹35000 and ₹25000 along with a trophy each respectively. This is Yash's first-ever tournament triumph.
