Mayank Chakraborty becomes the second International Master from North-East India

13-year-old Mayank Chakraborty became India's latest International Master on Thursday 23rd November 2023. He defeated FM Marc Jay Bacojo (PHI) in the tenth round of World Youth Under-18 Open 2023 in Montesilvano, Italy. That win helped him cross 2400 in the live ratings. The talented youth from Guwahati, Assam also became the second IM from the North East India. Mayank earned his first IM-norm at 2nd Maharashtra GM Open in Nagpur, Maharashtra in June. A little over a month later, he secured his second IM-norm at Issykkul Open in Isyk-Kul, Kyrgyzstan. Three months later he scored his final IM-norm at Qatar Master in Qatar. Mayank scored three IM-norms, a GM-norm and 262 Elo rating points in a little over five months. As of now, the first major chess event of the year 2024 is 86th Tata Steel Chess. The 'Wimbledon of Chess' will take place from 12th to 28th January 2024. D Gukesh, R Praggnanandhaa and Vidit Gujrathi will be seen in action in the Masters section along with Ding Liren, Alireza Firouzja, Ian Nepomniachtchi, Anish Giri, Parham Maghsoodloo, Wei Yi, Nodirbek Abdusattorov, Jorden van Foreest, Alexander Donchenko, Max Warmerdam and Wenjun Ju. Tata Steel Chess India 2023 Women Rapid winner, IM Divya Deshmukh and GM Leon Luke Mendonca will be making their debut in the Challengers section. They will be joined by GM Harika Dronavalli who will make her return to Wijk aan Zee after five years. Who are your picks to win the Masters and Challengers sections?

GM Alexei Fedorov scored an unbeaten 8/9 to win 6th Tamil Nadu IM-norm Closed Circuit Chess Tournament 2023. He finished a staggering two points ahead of the field. The second highest rated player of the event, GM Evgeniy Podolchenko scored 6/9 to secure sole second place. 13-year-old Ajay Santhosh Parvathareddy and IM Asylbek Abdyzhapar (KGZ) scored 5/9 each. They were placed second and third respectively. The teenager gained 58.4 Elo rating points. Mitrabha Guha dominates 13th Chess for Youth 2023

GM Mitrabha Guha scored an unbeaten 6.5/7 to win 13th Chess for Youth 2023 Premier (Under-25) section. He finished a half point ahead of the field. IM Shahil Dey, IM Aronyak Ghosh and IM Utsab Chatterjee scored 6/7 each. They were placed second to fourth respectively according to tie-breaks. The total prize fund for the Premier section was ₹150000. The first prize was ₹35000 + trophy. Mitrabha inaugurated both first and 13th edition. A little over six year ago, he also won the previous edition with a perfect 7/7 score in Under-16. The reigning National Under-17 Girls champion, Mrittika Mallick became the sole girl to make a top ten finish. She scored 5/7 to finish ninth. Carlos Daniel Albornoz Cabrera wins 17th Figueira da Foz Open 2023, Lalit second and Mehar third

Cuba no.2 GM Carlos Daniel Albornoz Cabrera scored an unbeaten 7/9 to win 17th Figueira da Foz International Chess Festival 2023. Carlos finished a half point ahead of the field. Twelve players scored 6.5/9 each. GM M R Lalit Babu and IM Mehar Chinna Reddy C H secured second and third respectively. GM Prraneeth Vuppala, GM Sayantan Das, GM Diptayan Ghosh and IM Vav Rajesh are four more Indians to finish with the sam score 6.5/9. They were placed fifth, ninth, eleventh and twelfth respectively according to tie-breaks. The total prize fund of the tournament was €8050. Che International Chess Festival 2023: Praggnanandhaa beats Nihal 7.5 - 2.5 in their first-ever Blitz match

GM R Praggnanandhaa won the first-ever Blitz match against GM Nihal Sarin at Che International Chess Festival 2023. The FIDE World Cup 2023 Silver medalist won the match with two games to spare 5.5-2.5. He won the last two games to register a one-sided victory of 7.5-2.5. It was not a rated event, an exhibition match to showcase the talent of both Indian youngsters. Afterwards, they both played a Simul against a combined total of 31 players. 13-year-old Aadinath Harilal of Ernakulam, Kerala became the sole player to draw against Nihal. Ritviz Parab dominates TTCA Blitz Rating Open 2023

Goa's latest IM Ritviz Parab scored an unbeaten 10.5/11 to win TTCA Blitz Rating Open 2023. He finished a full point ahead of the field. Top seed of the event, IM Nitish Belurkar scored sole 9.5/11 to secure second place. Nitish drew against the eventual champion, Ritviz in the penultimate round. Mandar Pradip Lad and Aditya Savalkar scored 9/11 each. They secured third and fourth place according to tie-breaks. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹100000. Nitish Belurkar and Karthik Venkataraman win Chess at Dreamhack Rapid and Blitz Open 2023

The biggest open gaming convention in India, Dreamhack Hyderabad 2023 hosted a Rapid and a Blitz Open chess tournament. IM Nitish Belurkar and GM Karthik Venkataraman won the Rapid and Blitz event. Nitish and IM Viani Antonio Dcunha scored 8/9 each. Nitish won the event due to better tie-breaks, Viani secured second place. Both remained undefeated. IM FT Harikrishnan A Ra secured third place scoring 7.5/9. In the Blitz event, Karthik scored sole 8.5/9 to become the champion. IM Sammed Jaykumar Shete, IM Nitish Belurkar and Aakash Sharadchandra Dalvi scored 8/9 each. Only Aakash remained undefeated among them. They were placed second to fourth respectively. IM Sammed Jaykumar Shete, GM Laxman R R and IM Vikramaditya Kulkarni scored 8/9 each at 19th Shri Maheshwaranand Saraswati Memorial Rapid Rating Open 2023. Sammed won the tournament due to better tie-breaks, Laxman and Vikramaditya were placed second and third respectively. The top three finishers did not face each other. Laxman and Vikramaditya remained undefeated. Sammed won his last six games consecutively after losing his third round game. The total prize fund for the tournament was ₹200000. The top three prizes were ₹60000 + trophy, ₹30000 and ₹20000 each respectively. This was Sammed's eleventh tournament triumph of the year. Arnav Maheshwari wins 5th Tamil Nadu IM-norm Closed Circuit 2023

Arnav Maheshwari and IM Asylbek Abdyzhapar (KGZ) scored 7/9 each at 5th Tamil Nadu IM-norm Closed Circuit Chess Tournament 2023. Arnav won the tournament as he defeated Asylbek in the fourth round. Thus, the tie-breaks favored Arnav. They both finished 1.5 points ahead of the field. GM Evgeniy Podolchenko scored sole 5.5/9 to finish third. Arnav's 2472 performance earned him his maiden IM-norm. The teenager also gained 103.2 Elo rating points in the process. The Tamil Nadu IM-norm Closed Circuit tournaments have already produced four IM-norms out of the five events. Che International Chess Festival 2023: Kerala wins against Cuba 42.5 - 37.5

Kerala won the friendly match against Cuba 42.5-37.5 at Che International Chess Festival 2023. Kerala won it with one Blitz match to spare. GM S L Narayanan is the top scorer of the match 14.5 points, closely followed by IM Jubin Jimmy 14 points. GM Elier Miranda Mesa (CUB) and GM Dylan Isidro Berdayes Ason (CUB) scored 12 and 11.5 points each. It was a closely fought battle and Cubans were the favorites as they had two Grandmasters and overall much stronger players in terms of experience and strength. FIDE World Rapid and Blitz Championships 2023: Information for players

FIDE World Rapid and Blitz championship 2023 will take place from 26th to 30th December in Samarkand, Uzbekistan. All details regarding the tournament is available now. Apart from being the reigning National champion in Classical, Rapid or Blitz format, players rated at least 2550 in Open and 2250 in Women in any of the last twelve FIDE Rating list in Classical, Rapid or Blitz, are eligible to participate. FIDE President can nominate ten players and organizers are entitled to invite up to ten players in each Open and Women section as per their choice. Last date for regsitration is 1st December 2023. Total prize fund is US$ 350000 in both Open section of Rapid and Blitz, the top three prizes are US$ 60000, 50000 and 40000 each. The total prize fund in Women are US$ 150000 each in Rapid and Blitz.
