8th Salamanca Chess Festival 2025 R5-7: Pranav and Ponomariov keep winning

The reigning World Junior 2025 champion, GM Pranav Venkatesh increased his winning streak to five games at 8th Salamanca Chess Festival 2025. Pranav defeated GM Julio E Granda Zuniga (PER), IM Sara Khadem (ESP) and the only player whom he was yet to beat at this event - IM Sabrina Vega Gutierrez (ESP). His sole pursuer - former World Champion, GM Ruslan Ponomariov (UKR) also won all three of his games. Pranav is currently at 6.5/7, followed by Ponomariov at 6/7. They will clash in the eighth round. European Club Cup 2025 R6: World Champion Gukesh beats Arjun Erigaisi, powers SuperChess to sole lead

SuperChess defeated their coleader, Alkaloid to emerge sole leader at 40th European Club Cup 2025 Open. World Champion, D Gukesh scored the key victory over the World no.4, Arjun Erigaisi to ensure his team wins the match 3.5-2.5. SuperChess has taken sole lead 12/12. Turkish Airlines sports club lost to Tuxera Aquaprofit Nagykanizsai Sakk Klub by 2.5-3.5. The latter has moved up to sole second position 11/12. They will inevitably clash with each other in the final round. The defending champion, Novy Bor bounced back with a win over Beer Sheva 5-1. In the Women's event, SuperChess lost to Cercle d'échecs de Monte-Carlo 1.5-2.5. They just need a draw in the final round to become the champion. Mandar Pradip Lad scores a hat-trick of winning Late Shri Chandrakant Naik Memorial Rapid Rating Open

The reigning Goa State Under-19 Open champion, Mandar Pradip Lad scored a perfect 9/9 to win 8th Late Shri Chandrakant Naik Memorial Rapid Rating Open 2025. This is the third consecutive year he has won this event with a 100% score. In 2023, he scored 8/8 and in 2024 he did 9/9. He finished a whopping 1.5 points ahead of the rest. Five players - Ravindra Nikam, Saras Summer Powar, Aarav Chopdekar, Sagar G Shenoy and Rishikesh Parab scored 7.5/9 each. They secured second to sixth place respectively according to tie-breaks. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹100000. The top three prizes were ₹20000, ₹12000 and ₹8000 along with a trophy each. This is Mandar's tenth overall tournament triumph of the year. He won eight of them with a perfect score. The reigning World Junior 2025 champion, GM Pranav Venkatesh won a back and forth battle in the fourth round of 8th Salamanca Chess Festival 2025. Pranav got a substantial advantage in the middlegame. However, his opponent, WGM Nadya Toncheva (BUL) kept fighting and getting herself back in the game. Eventually, she made the final mistake and lost. The Latin America legend, GM Julio Granda (PER) scored his first win of the event against IM Sabrina Vega Gutierrez (ESP). Former World Champion, GM Ruslan Ponomariov (UKR) defeated IM Sara Khadem (ESP) to stay a half point behind the sole leader at 3/4. Three rounds of Rapid games will be played today. SuperChess and Alkaloid have maintained perfect score at 40th European Chess Club Cup 2025 Open. Alkaloid defeated their coleaders and the defending champion, Novy Bor by 4-2. GM Arjun Erigaisi and GM Yangyi Yu scored the crucial victories for Alkaloid. Arjun ended GM Vincent Keymer's winning streak as the latter's bold exchange sacrifice did not go his way. GM Parham Maghsoodloo and GM Daniel Dardha scored important victories to ensure Superchess wins against Bayegan Pendik chess sports club 4-2. The coleaders Superchess and Alkaloid will inevitably clash in the penultimate round. Cercle d'échecs de Monte-Carlo maintains their sole lead in the Women. In an incredibly sad and shocking turn of events, the Charlotte Chess Club made an official announcement on 20th October, stating that Grandmaster Daniel Naroditsky has passed away at the age of 29. Known to millions of Chess fans worldwide, Daniel was an exceptionally strong speed chess player, an amazing chess coach, a very popular chess content creator, and a world-renowned chess commentator. It was a Black day for the Chess World, and all of the chess community was very emotional upon receiving the news of his passing. Apoorv Kamble dominates Sakthi Group 31st Tamil Nadu IM-norm Closed Circuit 2025, Nandish third

FM Apoorv Kamble scored an unbeaten 7.5/9 to win 31st Tamil Nadu IM-norm Closed Circuit Chess Tournament 2025. He finished a staggering 1.5 points ahead of the competition and also scored an IM-norm. IM Wilson Guillermo Palencia Morales (COL) scored sole 6/9 to secure second place. FM V S Nandish scored 5.5/9 to finish third. Apoorv drew against both runners-up in the last two rounds. The reigning World Junior 2025 champion, GM Pranav Venkatesh made a great start at 8th Salamanca Chess Festival 2025. He scored 2.5/3 and finished the day with a victory over the youngest World Champion, GM Ruslan Ponomariov (UKR). Pranav was in a bit of trouble. However, his opponent, instead of seizing his advantage, allowed Pranav to get back in the game. During time trouble, he blundered and Pranav won the game. Before that, Pranav defeated IM Sara Khadem (ESP) and drew against top Spanish woman, IM Sabrina Vega Gutierrez. Only one round will be played today as Simultaneous exhibition games will take place. Alkaloid, SuperChess and Novy Bor are the three teams with a perfect score 8/8 at 40th European Chess Club Cup 2025 Open. The top seed, Bayegan Pendik chess sports club was held to a draw by Tuxera Aquaprofit Nagykanizsai Sakk Klub 3-3. Vugar Gashimov and Kfar Saba lost to Alkaloid and SuperChess by 2-4 each. The defending champion, Novy Bor defeated Rishon Le Zion #1 by 4.5-1.5. GM Aravindh Chithambaram quite possibly played the best game of the tournament so far when he defeated GM Ahmad Ahmadzada. The reigning World Junior 2025 champion, GM Pranav Venkatesh will be seen in action today 8th Salamanca Chess Festival 2025 in Salamanca, Spain. Salamanca is known as the 'cradle of modern chess'. The tournament is unlike any other super tournaments because it features the equal number of men and women participants in the same tournament. Pranav will be battling against the youngest World Chess Champion, GM Ruslan Ponomariov (UKR), Latin America legend - GM Julio Granda Zuniga (PER), IM Sabrina Vega (ESP), IM Sara Khadem (ESP) and WGM Nadya Toncheva (BUL). Rajendra Kumar Sahu scored an unbeaten 7.5/8 to win SR All Odisha Rating Open 2025, in memory of Bhagyashree. He finished a half point ahead of the rest. Five players - Omm Aditya Khadanga, Shrihan Sabat, Sourav Mohapatra, Majhi Khetrabar and Sai Shakti Panda scored 7/8 each. They secured second to sixth place respectively according to tie-breaks. The total prize fund was ₹200100. The top three prizes were ₹30000, ₹20000 and ₹15000 along with a trophy each. The four-day eight round Rating Open tournament was organized by SR Chess Centre, Odisha at The Amrapali Resort in Cuttack, Odisha from 27th to 30th September 2025. The World Champion, D Gukesh played his first game at 40th European Club Chess Cup 2025 in the third round. He made a beautiful exchange sacrifice against GM Sergei Movsesian of Sigil Fund Pardubice. Gukesh converted his long-term advantage and went on to win the game. His team Superchess registered their victory with a 5.5-0.5 score. SV Werder Bremen got whitewashed by the top seed Bayegan Pendik chess sports club 0-6. Second seeded, Alkaloid defeated Schachfreunde Berlin 1903 by 4-2. SG Riehen lost to Novy Bor 1.5-4.5. Among the Women, the top seed, Cercle d'échecs de Monte-Carlo defeated the defending champion, Tajfun SK Ljubljana by a minimum margin 2.5-1.5. Niladri Banerjee decimates 25th KT Global School Rating Open 2025

Niladri Banerjee scored 8.5/9 to win 25th KT Global School Rating Open 2025. He finished a full point ahead of the rest. The current Odisha State 2025 champion, Tapan Badamundi and reigning National Under-9 Open 2025 champion, Sattwik Swain scored sole 7.5/9 each. They secured second and third place respectively according to tie-breaks. Niladri defeated both eventual runners-up, Tapan and Sattwik in Round 8 and 7 respectively. The total prize fund was ₹200000. The top three prizes were ₹25000, ₹20000 and ₹10000 along with a trophy each. The five-day nine round Rating Open tournament was organized by IIG Sports Academy at KT Global School in Khordha, Odisha from 3rd to 7th October 2025. This is Niladri's first tournament triumph of the year.

The top seeds of 40th European Chess Club Open and 29th Women tournaments scored a smooth victory in Round 2. Bayegan Pendik chess sports scored 5-1 victory over SK Dunajska Streda without conceding a single loss. GM Nihal Sarin won his first game of the event against IM Zsolt Rigo using a nice tactic. Ippotis Rhodes chess club got 0-6 whitewashed by Alkaloid. GM Arjun Erigaisi, GM Aravindh Chithambaram and GM Abhimanyu Puranik were among the winners for Alkaloid. The defending champion, Novy Bor defeated De Sprenger Echternach 5-1. However, GM Pentala Harikrishna suffered a loss against GM Andrey Sumets. Among the Women, CE Gambit Bonnevoie lost to Cercle d'échecs de Monte-Carlo by 1-3. FIDE Women's World Cup 2025 winner, GM Divya Deshmukh scored her first win. Sriram Adarsh Uppala wins Bronze at World Youth Under-18 Open 2025

GM Siddharth Jagadeesh (SGP), IM Artiom Stribuk, IM Sriram Adarsh Uppala and GM Jakub Seemann (POL) scored 8.5/11 each at World Youth Under-18 Open Championship 2025. Siddharth won Gold according to tie-breaks, Artiom Silver and Sriram Bronze. The last medal an Indian won at a World Youth was over three years ago in 2022. Sriram ended a three-year-long medal drought. World Youth Under-14 Open 2022 Gold medalist, IM Ilamparthi A R scored 8/11. However, eight players in his category scored the same.
