India wins five medals at Western Asian Junior Chess Championships 2023

India has won a total of five medals including two Gold, one Silver and two Bronze medals at Western Asian Junior Chess Championships 2023. Two former Asian Junior Open champions - IM Harshavardhan G B and IM Raahul V S shined brightly. Harshavardhan won Gold in Rapid Open scoring 5.5/7 and Silver in Classical Open 6.5/9. Raahul earned Gold in Blitz Open with a perfect score of 7/7. In the Girls event, Rindhiya V scored 6/9 to win Bronze in the Classical event. 13th London Chess Classic 2023 R7: 14-year-old Shreyas Royal impressive against Gukesh

14-year-old IM Shreyas Royal (ENG) played impressive chess against GM D Gukesh in the seventh round of 13th London Chess Classic 2023. At one point, Shreyas had a great opportunity to push further in his advantageous position. However, he missed the move order and it allowed his opponent to equalize. M Amin Tabatabaei (IRI) and Mateusz Bartel (POL) are the two winners of this round. They defeated Nikita Vitiugov (POL) and Hans Niemann (USA) respectively. Michael Adams (ENG) maintains his sole lead 5/7. He drew against Andrei Volokitin (UKR). 9th Gashimov Memorial 2023 Rapid R1-3: Nijat Abasov gains early sole lead

Nijat Abasov (AZE) emerged early sole leader at 9th Vugar Gashimov Memorial 2023. He scored 5/6 including wins against Richard Rapport (ROU) and Boris Gelfand (ISR). Rauf Mamedov (AZE), Arjun Erigaisi and Vidit Gujrathi are the three players at 4/6 each. Vidit had the longest game of the day against Jorden van Foreest (NED) in the second round which went for over 150 moves. After that, he beat Rapport in the third. Arjun Erigaisi defeated Shakhriyar Mamedyarov (AZE) in the third round. It was an excellent game where 'Shakh' faltered in the end and Arjun capitalized on it in a sharp position. IM Vikramaditya Kulkarni wins Bijnor Open 2023

Maharashtra's experienced International Master Vikramaditya Kulkarni won the Bijnor Open FIDE Rated Chess Tournament! This was the first event of the UP Booster Series, which was started with the aim of bringing a new chess revolution in Uttar Pradesh With his brilliant game, Showcasing brilliant play Vikramaditya won with a 100% score - he won all seven of his games and secured first place. In the final round, he defeated the second seed of the tournament, IM Ramnathan Balasubramaniam from Tamil Nadu. Sparsh Yadav from Uttar Pradesh stood second, and Gopal Krishna Maheshwari took third place. On the last day, ChessBase India organized a simul given by WIM Angela Franco from Colombia, and also announced the best game award from all the seven rounds. Khelo Chess India Finale on 10th December 2023

The journey of Khelo Chess India tournament which started from January this year in Bhopal, the capital of Madhya Pradesh, has now reached the grand finale at the end of the year! The annual tournament of Khelo Chess India will be organized on this occasion on 10th December. On Sunday morning from 10 AM, "Khelo Chess India SAGE Sports Academy Rapid Tournament" will take place first, where the total prize fund is Rs. 50,000. Immediately after this from 3:45 PM, the "Khelo Chess India SAGE Sports Academy Blitz Tournament" will be held with a prize fund of Rs 11000! Entries are limited - there is space for only 100 players in Blitz and 200 players in the Rapid event. Apart from the prize money, trophies and medals will also be awarded to the winners of the competition! This will be the 22nd and 23rd event in the year respectively of Khelo Chess India. Yangyi Yu dominates Alef Super Stars 2023, Nihal Sarin second

Yangyi Yu (CHN) won Alef Super Stars 2023 convincingly. He scored 56/84 to become the winner of the triathlon. Nihal Sarin won the Blitz segment scoring 16/24. Thus, taking his final score to 45/84. Salem Saleh (UAE) scored 11/24 in the Blitz to finish third with an overall 38/84, followed by Sanan Sjugirov (HUN) 33/84. Nihal gained 16.4 Blitz Elo rating points, taking his live rating to 2705.4. He is now World no. 25 in the live ratings. Nihal made a good finish. 13th London Chess Classic 2023 R6: Gukesh beats McShane, Jules loses a winning game against Adams

D Gukesh scored a fine victory against Luke McShane (ENG) in the sixth round of 13th London Chess Classic 2023. The England no.4 made an incorrect exchange in the endgame which turned things in Gukesh's favor. Jules Moussard (FRA) miscalculated in a winning position against the legend, Michael Adams (ENG). He found the resource and Jules ended up losing the game. English prodigy, IM Shreyas Royal managed to defend well and salvage a draw against GM Nikita Vitiugov, despite the former being worse for the better part of the game. Adams continues his sole lead 4.5/6, followed by Gukesh 4/6 and Tabatabaei 3.5/6. Round 7 starts today at 2 p.m. local time, 7:30 p.m. IST. Vidit Gujrathi and Arjun Erigaisi set to face world's best at 9th Gashimov Memorial 2023

Vidit Gujrathi and Arjun Erigaisi are the two Indians who will take part at 9th Gashimov Memorial 2023. They will battle against - Richard Rapport (ROU), Shakhriyar Mamedyarov (AZE), Teimour Radjabov (AZE), Jorden van Foreest (NED), Boris Gelfand (ISR), Rauf Mamedov (AZE), Nijat Abasov (AZE) and Aydin Suleymanli (AZE). Nine rounds of Rapid and 18 rounds Blitz games will be played from 8th to 11th December 2023. The winner will be decided based on the combined score of Rapid and Blitz events. Three rounds of Rapid games will start tomorrow Friday 8th December from 2 p.m. local time, 3:30 p.m. IST. New Zealand chess flourishes with Papatoetoe Rapid Junior and Open

New Zealand has a chess scene that is still in its infancy. The country has only one grandmaster and six international masters, however, it is seeing an increase in the number of younger chess players. Almost all chess players are able to practice and improve their skills with the help of regional clubs. Each club with its own committee organises tournaments, sometimes amidst other clubs, and continue the cycle of introducing new players to the game. One such club in a suburb in Auckland called Paptoetoe held two tournaments on 2nd and 3rd December, one of them an Open category and the other a Junior section. Read on to find out more

13th London Chess Classic 2023 R5: Gukesh escapes against Adams

D Gukesh is having some issues with his finishes at 13th London Chess Classic 2023. It seemed his game against Michael Adams (ENG) will end in a draw. However, in the final momnts of double rook and knight endgame, he made a slight inaccuracy which turned out to be big one. Adams did not spot it well and the game soon ended in a draw. GM Mateusz Bartel (POL) scored the sole win of the round against IM Shreyas Royal (ENG). Adams remains sole leader 3.5/5. Yangyi Yu (CHN) maintains his sole lead by sharing points in all three games of Alef Super Stars Rapid 2023. The China no.3 is still the sole player who is undefeated at this event. Nihal Sarin scored his sole victory in the Rapid segment against Sanan Sjugirov (HUN). He remains in pursuit by maintaining the gap of 11 points. UAE no.1 Salem Saleh had the best day of the event so far. He scored two wins and a draw to jump to third spot. Yangyi is still in sole lead 40/60, Nihal stays in the hunt 29/60, Salem moved up to the third spot 27/60 and Sanan had a tough day, slipping to the fourth spot 24/60. This is the story of one such girl from Bihar who has made a name for herself in the chess community and is soaring to new heights. The chess culture in Bihar was almost negligible a few years ago and is growing now. One player who is doing very well in the last few years is the very talented 17-year-old Marium Fatima. Everyone in Bihar knows her and is proud of her, and it is not an exaggeration to say that she can be the first WGM from Bihar. For all those who are not aware of her, this article is the perfect opportunity to get to know her and understand why we think so highly about her talent. Subhayan Kundu dominates Hetauda Cup Asian Open 2023, Arvinder Preet third

Subhayan Kundu scored an unbeaten 7.5/9 to win Hetauda Cup Asian Open 2023. He finished a half point ahead of the field. IM Mohammad Minhaz Uddin (BAN) and FM Arvinder Preet Singh scored 7/9 each. They were placed second and third respectively as Minhaz got the better of Arvinder in the fourth round. It helped his tie-break score. Marium Fatima became the sole female player to make a top ten finish. She scored 6.5/9 to be placed tenth. The total prize fund of the tournament was Nepalese Rupees 587500. The top three prizes were NRs 125000, 75000 and 40000 along with a trophy each respectively. This was Subhayan's fifth tournament triumph of the year.
