World Cup 2025 R2 TB: Praggnanandhaa barely escapes elimination, joins Vidit, Narayanan, Pranesh and Pranav

R Praggnanandhaa was on the verge of elimination against Temur Kuybokarov (AUS) in FIDE World Cup 2025 Round 2 tie-breaks. The Australia no.2 must be regretting missing out on such a huge opportunity to knock out the World no.7. Vidit Gujrathi, S L Narayanan, Pranesh M and Pranav Venkatesh also won their respective games to advance to Round 3. Nihal Sarin, Karthikeyan Murali and Raunak Sadhwani got eliminated by losing their tie-break games. Vidit drew the first game and then won the next against IM Faustino Oro (ARG). Narayananan drew four before winning both 5'+3" Blitzgames. Pranesh won both 15'+10" Rapid games. Pranav won the first Rapid game and drew the next. FIDE World Cup 2025 R2.2: Diptayan shocks Nepo, advances with Gukesh, Arjun, Harikrishna and Karthik

GM Diptayan Ghosh pulled off the biggest upset of FIDE World Cup 2025 so far. Diptayan knocked out the former two World Championship Challenger and the reigning World Blitz cochampion, GM Ian Nepomniachtchi. It was indubitably the biggest win of his career and he won the match too. The World Champion, D Gukesh, Arjun Erigaisi, Diptayan, Pentala Harikrishna and  Karthik Venkataraman are the five Indians who have advanced to Round 3. Eight Indians - R Praggnanandhaa, Vidit Gujrathi, Nihal Sarin, Karthikeyan Murali, S L Narayanan, Pranesh M, Pranav Venkatesh and Raunak Sadhwani will have to play tie-breaks today. FIDE World Cup 2025 Round 2.1: Arjun Erigaisi and Pranav Venkatesh score a win

The World Champion, GM D Gukesh started his FIDE World Cup 2025 campaign with a draw against former World Junior champion, GM Kazybek Nogerbek (KAZ). Gukesh had a bind at a certain moment. However, he incorrectly traded his dark-square bishop and allowed his opponent to free up his pieces. Second seed, GM R Praggnanandhaa was held to a solid draw by the Australia no.2, GM Temur Kuybokarov. World no.6, GM Arjun Erigaisi and the reigning World Junior champion, GM Pranav Venkatesh are the only two Indians to win their respective games among 17. GM Diptayan Ghosh had a calm draw against the World Blitz cochampion, GM Ian Nepomniachtchi. GM Surya Sekhar Ganguly and IM Aronyak Ghosh lost their games against GM Maxime Vachier-Lagrave (FRA) and GM Levon Aronian (USA). Both are in a must-win situation to avoid elimination. World Champion D Gukesh returns to Top 10

World Champion, D Gukesh has returned to World top ten in the November 2025 FIDE Rating list. He gained 10.8 Elo rating points en route his double Gold performance at 40th European Club Cup 2025 Open. Arjun Erigaisi and R Praggnanandha slipped to World no.6 and 7 respectively. There are now seven Indians in Top 30. Nihal Sarin is now World no.30. Aravindh Chithambaram added 1.9 Elo rating points. Among the Women, four are in Top 20. FIDE Women's World Cup winner, GM Divya Deshmukh returned to 2500+ club. She gained 7.2 Elo rating points at 29th European Club Cup 2025 Women. FIDE World Cup 2025 Round 1 TB: Diptayan Ghosh, S L Narayanan and Aronyak Ghosh are through to Round 2

A total of 17 Indians will play in Round 2 of FIDE World Cup 2025. GM S L Narayanan, IM Aronyak Ghosh and GM Diptayan Ghosh won their respective tie-breaks to advance to Round 2. Narayanan and Diptayan won both of their 15'+10" games to win their respective games. Aronyak had six decisive games before securing his place in the next round. GM Lalit Rohit and GM Raja Rithvik got eliminated. Aronyak is the sole Indian IM out of the three who will battle in Round 2. For the first time in a FIDE World Cup history, the highest number of Indians have qualified - nine. They will join the eight seeded players. Six out of the 16 Indians have advanced to the second round of FIDE World Cup 2025. They are - GM Pranav Venkatesh, GM Raunak Sadhwani, GM Pranesh M, GM Iniyan Pa, GM Karthik Venkataraman and GM Surya Sekhar Ganguly. Among them, only Pranav and Surya whitewashed their respective opponents. GM S L Narayanan, GM Lalit Rohit, IM Aronyak Ghosh, GM Diptayan Ghosh and GM Raja Rithvik R will play tie-breaks. Aronyak pulled off a huge upset in a must-win situation against GM Mateusz Bartel (POL). Winning on demand against a former 2650+ is no easy task. They just need a draw in Game 2 to advance to the next round. GM Divya Deshmukh, IM Neelash Saha, IM Harshavardhan G B, IM Himal Gusain and IM Aronyak Ghosh lost their respective games. It means they must win their second game to stay in the tournament. Podolchenko triumphs at 32nd Tamil Nadu IM-norm RR 2025, Aakash G second and Siddhanth Poonja third

GM Evgeniy Podolchenko scored an unbeaten 7/9 to win 32nd Tamil Nadu IM-norm Round-Robin 2025. He finished a half point ahead of the rest. FM Aakash G and Siddhanth Poonja scored 6.5/9 each. They were placed second and third according to tie-breaks. Both of them scored an IM-norm each. For Aakash it was his final IM-norm and Siddhhanth it is maiden norm. FIDE World Cup 2025 is going to witness a record number of Indian participation - 24. The first round will have 16 Indians in action, from debutants to the returning players. FIDE Women's World Cup 2025 winner, GM Divya Deshmukh drew the black pieces for the players with odd number of seeding in the first game of Round 1. World Cup is indubitably the most exciting and grueling event of the year as players will be tested in all three formats - Classical, Rapid and Blitz for four weeks. Among the former champions, GM Levon Aronian (USA), the only two-time winner of this event is taking part. The winner's trophy is named Viswanathan Anand Trophy, after the legend, India's first Grandmaster ever. Who will win the entire event and etch their name in the history? Magnus Carlsen convincingly clinches Clutch Chess 2025 by winning it with two games to spare

Magnus Carlsen won Clutch Chess Champions Showdown 2025 with two games to spare. The World no.1 started the final day with two wins against the World Champion, D Gukesh. Then he defeated Fabiano Caruana in consecutive games to win the event. The last two games against Hikaru Nakamura was immaterial, so he just drew them. Carlsen scored 25.5/36. Caruana secured second place scoring 16.5/36. Nakamura third 14/36 and Gukesh fourth 10/36. FM Nico Stelmaszyk (GER), CM Soham Datar, Martin Heider (GER), Daniel Kurpriyanov (UKR) and GM Hagen Poetsch (GER) scored 5.5/7 each at 18th Worms Nibelungen Open 2025. Nico became champion. The remaining were placed second to fifth respectively according to tie-breaks. The total prize fund was €5100. The top three prizes were €1000, €500 and €350 each. The four-day seven round Rating Open tournament was organized by SV Worms 1878 e.V. at Auditorium of the Paternus School, Grabenstraße in Worms-Pfeddersheim, Germany from 2nd to 5th October 2025. Harsha Bharathakoti wins Brennan's Open 2025

GM Harsha Bharathakoti and IM Tianqi Wang (USA) scored an unbeaten 4.5/5 each at Brennan's Open 2025 Open. Harsha won the tournament. His sole draw of the event was against the eventual second runner-up, GM Illya Nyzhnyk (UKR) in the penultimate round. The total prize fund was US$ 4200. The top three prizes were US$ 1000, $600 and $400 in the Open section. The three-day five round Rating Open tournament was organized by Saint Louis Chess Club at Chase Park Plaza Hotel in Saint Louis, Missouri, USA from 3rd to 5th October 2025. Utsab Chatterjee clear first at 47th Citta di Arco Open 2025

IM Utsab Chatterjee scored an unbeaten 8/9 to win 47th Citta di Arco International Rating Open 2025. He finished a half point ahead of the rest. IM Frank Zeller (GER) scored sole 7.5/9 to secure second place. GM Keith Arkell (ENG), Matteo Montorsi (ITA) and Simon Schellenberg (ITA) scored 7/9 each. They finished third, fourth and fith respectively. The top three prizes were €650, €500 and €400 along with a cup each. The nine-day nine round  Rating Open tournament was organized by IA IO Cristina Pernici Rigo at Casino di Arco in Arco, Trentino, Italy from 4th to 12th October 2025. Subhabrata Roy is the only other Indian to make a top ten finish. He scored 6.5/9 to finish tenth in Classical and with the same score he finished second in Blitz. Manish Anto Cristiano F wins ChessFusion Rapid Rating Open 2025

IM Manish Anto Cristiano F, GM Laxman R R, FM J Ramakrishna, IM Mohamed Anees M and B Vignesh scored an unbeaten 8/9 each at ChessFusion Rapid Rating Open 2025. Manish won the tournament on tie-breaks. The remaining four were placed second to fifth respectively according to tie-breaks. The total prize fund was ₹400000. The top three prizes were ₹35000, ₹30000 and ₹18000 along with a trophy each. Laxman won the Blitz Open scoring an unbeaten 8.5/9. FM Aditya Varun Gampa and IM Ajay Karthikeyan scored 8/9 each.
